SCARFF, Wilma Henderson, 93 went to her heavenly Father on Tuesday, March 25, 2014. She was born October 12, 1920 in St. Clairsville, Ohio to the late Wilbur and Florence Ault Henderson. She was the wife of the late Jack Scarff who predeceased her on October 30, 1996.
Soon after graduating from St. Clairsville High School and the Elliott School of Business, Wilma joined the World War II war effort with work at the Navy Dept. in Washington, D.C. and Blaw Knox in Martins Ferry. Then off to the business world of American Airlines in Kansas City briefly, then to Chicago where she was employed by General Electric, and there eventually worked her way up to private secretary for a GE vice president. She spent the rest of her adult life in the Chicago area.
She married Jack Scarff on December 27, 1966 at which time she left the business world after many years with GE to become a housewife and stepmother to Dee Dee. Not only was she a talented businesswoman, she had many homemaker skills as well. She was an exceptional seamstress and a fantastic cook. She had many interests, including golf, bridge and many other card games, Chicago's wonderful museums, travel, including around the world trip, an African Safari and in later years many road trips with her siblings.
She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Des Plaines, IL and National Secretaries Association. In her teen years, she was active in Belmont County 4-H and Farm Bureau Youth Council and her church youth group.
Wilma was a fun-loving and generous special aunt to her 8 nieces and nephews, who she showered with her generosity over the years.
She is survived by her stepdaughter, Dorothy Diane (Dee Dee) Langford of Lodi, Wisconsin; brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Dorothy Henderson of St. Clairsville, Ohio; a sister, Doris Henderson Ochs of Frederick, Maryland; nieces and nephews, Annie Scarff-Snedecor, Ladonna Workman, Linda Langmyer, Wayne Henderson, Keith Henderson, Karen Fraleigh, Sharon Crow, Deanna Ochs and Douglas Ochs. She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by siblings, Frances Henderson, Howard Henderson, Alfred Henderson and sister-in-law, Marilyn Henderson; brother-in-law, Paul Ochs.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the fine staff of Country Club Retirement Campus in Bellaire for the care and comfort they gave Wilma over the past year and to niece Karen for being her advocate and supporter.
Family and friends will be received on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio and again on Saturday from Noon until time of services at 1 p.m. with Rev. Homer Harden officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.
