Wilfred Dean Wharton, 73, Flushing, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 27, 2013.

He was born on Sept. 17, 1939 in Bethesda, Ohio, the son of the late Hilles and June (Irwin) Wharton. He graduated from Bethesda High School in 1957.

Wilfred married Shirley Neff on Oct. 8, 1961. On Sept. 1996 he retired from Navistar in Springfield, Ohio. He was a member of the Flushing Alliance Church where he served as usher and elder and did odd jobs around the church. After retirement, he worked with David Jones Auctioneers and was always looking for his next treasure or finding something to purchase for a family member.

Wilfred loved working in his garden, cutting firewood and working around the farm. He was a hard working, humble, giving person who enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an excellent provider for his family and always made sure that everyone was treated fairly. He was a devoted husband, father and friend, and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Shirley; son, Jay (Amanda) of Bethesda; daughter, Carla (Andy) Grow of Mogadore; daughter, Shawn (Bill) Meier of St. Clairsville; brother, Lewis (Jean) of Urbana; close cousin and friend, John Wharton of Barnesville; and five grandchildren with whom he loved spending time, Danica and Leah Wharton, Emily and Kaylee Grow, and Brandon Meier.

Calling hours will be held at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio on Monday from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. and again on Tuesday from 12 until the time of the service at 2 p.m. with Pastor Dean Lancaster officiating.

The family would like to thank the Cumberland Pointe staff, Schiffler Cancer Center of Wheeling Hospital staff and Valley Hospice for their care and advice during his illness.
