Walter Dale Thompson, 92, of Jewett, Ohio, went to be with the Lord at 5:25 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Forest Hill Nursing Home in St. Clairsville.
He was born October 17, 1925 in Germano, Ohio, a son of the late Clyde and Ruby Miller Thompson.
Walter was a retired Postmaster and former mail clerk for Jewett Post Office with 30 years of service and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was an active member of the Jewett United Methodist Church. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed bowling, playing cards, reading, taking Sunday afternoon rides and spending time with family.
In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Clara Dorothea "Dottie" Knox Thompson, two brothers, Raymond and Byron Thompson; and two sisters, Mildred Keifer and Thelma Bailie.
Surviving are his daughter, Ann L. Thompson Ferguson and her husband Rev. Gordon Ferguson of Zanesville, Ohio; a son, Jeffrey D. Thompson and his wife Carolyn of Bellville, Ohio; four grandchildren, Greg Thompson, Adam Ferguson, Sarah Ferguson-Burns and Andrew Ferguson; three great grandchildren; a brother, Myron (Wanda) Thompson of Cadiz; two sisters, Ruth Yost of St. Clairsville and Shirley (Dave) Waller of The Villages, Florida; sister-in-law, Marj Lehwald; several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Gordon Ferguson officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Fairview Cemetery, Jewett, Ohio.
Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Belmont County Veterans Association at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday.
