Walter Earl Lewis, 89, of Adena, Ohio, died Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born January 1, 1934, in St. Clairsville, Ohio, a son of the late Elva McConnell Lewis and Clyde Lewis.
Walter was a retired machinist from Mull Machine and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Bridgeport Lodge #181 F. & A.M. and the Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Cambridge and a member of the Colerain Ruritan Club. Walter had a strong faith in God and loved his family dearly. Walter could light up any room with his genuine smile, infectious laugh, and incomparable sense of humor. He enjoyed being outdoors and hunting. He was also known as "Mr. Fix-It", and the man always willing to offer a helping hand.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David C. Lewis; and infant twin sisters.
Walter is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Ruth A. Pickens Lewis; two children, John W. (Mary) Lewis, and Lona Jean Lewis-Sorge (Stanley Oleska); four grandchildren, Luke Sorge, Rachel Sorge, John W. (Danelle) Lewis Jr., and Amanda; a great grandchild is expected in August; and special friends, George and Peg Ferda.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio, where visitation will again be held on Monday from Noon until time of service at 1 p.m., with Pastor Joe Ellis officiating. The burial will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens with Full Military Honors conducted by the Belmont County Veterans Association.
Masonic Funeral Service will be held on Sunday at 5:45 p.m. in the funeral home.
