Obituary

Vincent August Kelner, 90, of Bonnie Lane, Adena, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2026, at his home. He was born June 8, 1935, the son of the late August “Gus” Kelner and Lena (Sambuco) Kelner.

In addition to his parents, Vince was preceded in death by his wife, of 67 years, Ella Joyce (Neavin) Kelner and one sister, Patricia Neavin.

Over the years, Vince had various occupations, always providing for his family. He was employed by United Dairy for 19 years, delivering milk to numerous Ohio Valley neighborhoods. He also worked 10 years as a welder and later as a foreman at the preparation plant, Allison Mine, Y&O Coal Company. He retired from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corporation after 18 years as a foreman at the Martins Ferry Plant. Even in retirement, he continued to work part-time for Whiteside Chevrolet for another 17 years as a courier.

He still found time to play music around the Ohio Valley. At a young age, Vince learned to play the accordion and began performing at recitals and high school minstrels. He spent over 40 years as a member of the orchestra, Vince Kelner’s Esquires. They played a variety of music including some polka favorites.

Vince enjoyed sports of all kinds. In his youth, he played baseball at second base for numerous teams. He later became an accomplished golfer. At 90, he was still golfing 18 holes at Bec-Wood Hills Golf Course. In his last decade of life his goal was to shoot his age, which he accomplished many times. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes and Pittsburgh Pirates fan. All through his life, he supported and enjoyed whatever sport played by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Vince was a loving and devoted father and is survived by two sons, Vince (Sandy) Kelner and Jeff (Karen) Kelner; two daughters, Jackie (Mick) Smolenak and Kelly Kelner; 9 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. He is also leaving behind a special friend, Nancy Hudson.

Vince loved life and laughter. He told elaborate jokes wherever he went and caught many a person with his April Fools Day jokes. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Family and friends will be received for visitation at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 3:00 p.m. A private entombment will be held at the convenience of the family at Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove.
