Stefan Emil Gawel, 73, of St. Clairsville, Ohio passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. He was born February 27, 1951, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Emil Gawel and Pelagia Maystriw Gawel.
Stefan was a Mine Safety and Health Specialist with a focus in computers for the United States Department of Labor. He was a graduate of Allentown Central Catholic High School and Penn State University Class of 1974. He was a member of the Polish American Citizens Society of Allentown, Pennsylvania where he played in the band and worked as a bartender. He was a member of the St. Anthony of Padua Church in Bridgeport, Ohio where he was a past member of the parish council.
Stefan is survived by his fiancée, Rose Mader; children, Amy (Wayne) Wastler, Katie (Josh) Hutchinson, and Kelly Caffrey; stepchildren, Christopher Mader, Kendra Marte, and Stephen (Kaycie) Mader; grandchildren, Cooper and Curren Wastler and Emma, Jack, and Grace Hutchinson; and step-grandchildren, Jonathan Marte, Bruce, Damien, and Lincoln Mader; as well as Rose's sisters, Marilyn Robinson, Diana (Robert) Kelly, Joan DiGregorio, Linda Warrick and Sandy Personette, whom Stefan loved to yank their chains every chance he got.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, from 11 a.m. until time of funeral services at 1:30 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville with Fr. John Mucha officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling at a later date. Cremation will take place under the care of Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, Weirton, West Virginia.
