Obituary

Shirley Ann Simpson, 80, of Belmont, Ohio, died at home surrounded by her family on Saturday, December 12, 2015.

She was born April 17, 1935 in Coshocton, Ohio, a daughter of the late Albert Laverne Wells and Frances White Wells.

Shirley graduated from Columbiana High School in 1953, achieving Valedictorian status in her class. At Ohio State University, Shirley graduated with two bachelor degrees, one in Arts and the other in Dental Hygiene. She was an active member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and Glee Club. After leaving college and getting married to Floyd, she became a member of Belmont United Methodist Church and the local Farm Bureau. She immensely enjoyed playing piano - something she was able to do despite the ravages of the aphasia which afflicted her. To raise the boys, she learned how to garden, farm, cook, and can food. Every summer we scraped corn off the cob and bagged it for the winter, to be sure, a chore for teenagers, but an activity we all look back on now with fond regard. She canned peaches and tomatoes and wild plums she grew from trees just outside her garden. She raked hay during the long, hot summers, never complaining and always ready to do what it took to keep the farm in business. Needless to say, she was an avid Ohio State University football fan - she even attended the Rose Bowl as a student and was a high school and college wrestling supporter.

Surviving her are her husband, Floyd Simpson; three sons, David Simpson of Fremont, California, Ron Simpson of Hollywood, Florida and Randy (Lisa) Simpson of Pataskala, Ohio; and two grandchildren, April and Jared Simpson.

Family and friends will be received at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio, on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of Service at 1 p.m. with Rev. Theresa Bobot and Rev. Dan Purdom officiating. Burial will follow in Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
