Ronald James Calovini, 84, of Barnesville, Ohio, died September 5, 2021, in Wheeling Hospital. Ron was a loving father and pap who lived a very full and rewarding life.
He was born January 24, 1937, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, son of the late Adolph and Mary Hinkle Calovini.
Ron completed St. Mary's Grade School in Lafferty and was a graduate of Lafferty High School where he was an honor student, class president in 1955, and a 4-year letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. He was a 1959 graduate of West Liberty State College where he was elected a student council member, a XN Fraternity Brother, a 4-year letterman in football and played on the Hilltoppers 1956 Intercollegiate Conference Championship team.
Ron taught and coached at Bridgeport High School from 1960-1963 and Union Local High School from 1963-1967. He was elected to two 4-year terms as trustee for Union Township. In 1967, he accepted the Superintendent position at Belmont County Home for the Aged. Following his appointment as superintendent he was elected secretary of Belmont County Central and Executive Committees for the Democrat Party and vice chairman of the Belmont County Young Democrat Party. His graduate education continued at several colleges and universities. Later he became a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator and served the position at Oakview Nursing Home, Monroe County Care Center, and helped Woodland Acres Nursing Home.
Ron was an avid outdoorsman of wild game, fishing, arrowhead hunting, card playing, and several other activities. He was a member of Barnesville VFW, American Legion and Lafferty Moose.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Aniebalie, and two sisters, Norma Paytash and Gloria Chini.
Surviving are his children, Kimberly, Carolyn, Janice, Ronnie, Mike, and Mary Calovini; a sister, Violet Gossett; twelve grandchildren, Cheyenne, Emily, Luther, Kody, Kole, Broc, Brandi, Bud, Brandon, Shane, Tyler, and Mandalyn; eight great-grandchildren, Brantley, Easton, Leo, Jonathan, Clayton, Caysen, Jaxxen and Gunnr; nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m.
Visitation will also be held Friday at Assumption Catholic Church in Barnesville, Ohio from 11 a.m. until time of Funeral Liturgy with Mass at 12 p.m. with Father Dave Cornett as the celebrant. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lafferty, Ohio.
