Obituary

Richard R. "Dick" Heagin, 70 of Valek Road St. Clairsville died Thursday, August 21, 2003 at Wheeling Hospital. He was born February 5, 1933 at Wheeling a son of the late John and Alice Monahan Heagin.

Dick retired with 26 years of service as the Fire Safety Educator and Investigator with the Ohio Fire Marshal?s office. He had over 46 years of service working with local fire departments and went to work for the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal?s Office and Fire Prevention Bureau in 1971 receiving his certification through Ohio State University. He was a certified EMTA and taught fire science at West Virginia Northern Community College and was an instructor at the Ohio State Fire School and at regional fire schools in the tri-state area.

Dick was a member of the Belmont County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities and served for 18 years on the Belco Crafts/Belmont Industries board of directors where he served as president for six years.

He was involved with the Belmont County Emergency Management Agency and was a member of the CISD team. He also served as a volunteer with the Cumberland Trail Fire Department since 1985 where he served as president of the Fireman?s Assoc. and was a member of the Maynard Community Volunteer Fire Department. Other involvement include the Fire Tac Board at Parkersburg, Tri-County Fire Fighters Assoc. and serving as a Belmont County Fire Investigator.

He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Maynard and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War serving as a member of the Air Crash and Rescue squad.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Richard, Jr. and a sister, Lucille Bell.

Surviving are his wife, Joann Lotz Heagin, his children, Kathleen Heagin, Barbara Springer of Chesapeake, VA, Karen Cupryk and her husband Steve of St. Clairsville, Kevin Heagin of Neffs, Keith Heagin of St.Clairsville and Bridgett Heagin of Athens, OH; his brother, Jack Heagin of Woodcross, UT and grandsons, Todd, Chase, Kyle, Tyler and Dillon.

Friends will be received on Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville. Concelebrated Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be Monday at 10 am. in St. Mary?s Catholic Church, St. Clairsville with Monsignor George Coyne, Father Thomas Graven and Father Thomas Chillog as celebrants.

In lieu of flowers the family requests friends to make memorial contributions to the School of Hope, 320 Fox-Shannon Place, St. Clairsville, OH 43950; Cumberland Trail Fire Dept., Box 505, St. Clairsville, OH 43950; Maynard Community Vol. Fire Dept., Box 301, Maynard, OH 43937 or the charity of their choice.

Military honors will be conducted by the United States Air Force. Cumberland Trail Honor Guard will also present colors.
