Obituary

Nan Shaw Ferren, 78, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, died June 23, 2017 at her home. She was born in Galax, Virginia on August 8, 1938 daughter of the late Roy Eugene Shaw and Zenna Blevins Shaw. Nan worked as a Practical Nurse for Waddell Hospital in Galax, Virginia. After moving to St. Clairsville, she was activities director for Oakview Nursing Home, Church Service Ministry Coordinator for Forest Hills Nursing Home, and was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse from Star Nursing Home and Personnel Temporary Services. She was a 1981 graduate of Belmont Technical College graduating second in her class and a member of the Licensed Practical Nurse Association of Ohio. A woman dedicated to community improvement, she championed many causes for the betterment of St. Clairsville and Belmont County. Nan was the former co-owner of Ferren Camera Shop and current owner and operator of Ferren Studio. She was business partner and secretary for Touch of Class Limousine Service. She was a former member of Child Study Club and the Jayceettes, and a dedicated Christian and active member of East Richland Friends Church. In addition to her parents, Nan was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Donald R. Ferren; four brothers, Virgil, Fred, Robert and Jackie Shaw; two sisters, Nellie Shaw Payne and Helen Shaw Easter. Nan is survived by two children, Kimberly Ferren Carter and her husband Greg of Moneta, Virginia and Kevan D. Ferren of the home; two grandchildren, Leanna C. Carter and Brandon L. Carter; a brother, Roy Lee Shaw of Galax, VA; two sisters, Faye Shaw Bedsaul and Kathy Margaret Shaw Isom both of Galax, VA; many loved nieces, nephews and cousins. Family and friends will be received on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville where visitation will again be held on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until time of services at 12 p.m., with Rev. Wayne Ickes officiating. Carilion Clinic will provide a Nightingale Tribute. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions in memory of Nan S. Ferren to support research in interstitial lung disease. Checks made payable to the Ohio State University Foundation can be mailed to PO 183112, Columbus, OH 43218-3112, Attn: Research in interstitial lung disease, pulmonary research fund (307127).
