Obituary

Mulvena Althea Jackson Saffell was an extraordinary mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Surrounded by her loving family, she left this world peacefully on September 21, 2021 at 7:21 pm, at age 93.

Mulvena was born on Depot Street in Flushing, only a few houses down from where she would raise her three children. Family and friends constantly gathered in her loving home to enjoy her well-known baking skills. She was renowned for her delicious pies, cakes, and famous peanut butter fudge. Her granddaughters loved YaYa's homemade biscotti, cherry cheesecake, and chocolate chip cookies. Sisters and nieces enjoyed sitting at the kitchen table and sharing their traditional potato salad sandwiches.

Mulvena was the daughter of Earl Emerson and Mary Jane Gilmore Jackson. She was the last surviving Jackson sibling, which included her brothers Bobby, Homer, Richard, Arthur and Earl Jr., and sisters Dorothy Purtiman, Marjorie Jackson, Marcella Gossett, and Margaret Jones. She was preceded in death by her much-loved son, Jack (Jackie) Saffell and cherished niece, Jane Gossett Brown.

Mulvena is survived by her daughter, Amy (Nolan) Harkins of Canal Fulton and son Matthew (Geoff) Saffell of Flushing. Mulvena was a devoted "YaYa" to "her Girls", Alexis Mulvena Harkins and fiancé Stephen Armstrong of Charleston, SC, and Dakota Harkins. She loved her Girls, never missing an important moment and always sharing in their accomplishments. Mulvena happily passed down her love of reading and Turner Classic Movies, and always made sure to have both a box of donuts and bag of apples on hand when they were around. During the Girls' college years, she kept them motivated with frequent heartfelt cards that held funds for "coffee and sweets."  Mulvena leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews, including special niece, Becki Gibson.

A 1947 graduate of Flushing High School, Mulvena retired from her position as a Caseworker for the Belmont County Department of Human Resources and Belmont County C.A.C. In her youth, she enjoyed working at her family's restaurant in Piedmont, Ohio. We will miss Mom's smile and fabulous dimples.

Donations can be made in her Memory to the Flushing Fire Department. Due to COVID concerns a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, to be announced. Arrangements are entrusted to Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville.
