Mildred Marie (Logston) Leslie, 91, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, died on November 25, 2015 at the Heartland of Lansing Care Center in Bridgeport. She was born on September 12, 1924 in Lawrenceville, near Chester, WV, daughter of the late Virgil Earnest and Amanda Melvina (Nutter) Logston, formerly of Martins Ferry.
Mildred's life included a long series of successes over adversity. At the young age of seven, she lost her right hand in an accident. But Mildred grew up and was able to do most of the things that other children were doing, and later in life, all required motherly tasks without assistance in raising her two children.
She attended Bridgeport High School. During World War II, she worked in Dayton, Ohio at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. She married Hugh David Leslie there, and they moved to the Martins Ferry area after the war. She is survived by one daughter, LoRayne Sue Leslie Simcox, of Virginia Beach, Virginia. A son, Hugh David Leslie, Jr., a veteran of the Vietnam War, of Lakeland, Florida, predeceased her. Two grandchildren also survive her, Holly Sue Simcox, and Rebecca Jane Leslie Ghiloni. Late in life, she re-entered the work force and held a number of jobs, always self-sufficient, refusing offers of assistance from family and friends. Before retiring, she worked for the St. Clairsville Water Department for 10 years and the Belmont County Health and Family Services for 22 years. She was well-known and respected for her hard work and integrity. For the past several years she lived at Heartland of Lansing in Bridgeport.
In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her sisters, Helen Logston Paden of St. Clairsville, Eva Logston Ryder of Dayton, Ohio, and a brother, Glenn Logston of Chester, West Virginia. She is survived by a sister, Mary Logston Chaponis of Miami, Florida, and a brother, Roy Logston of Huntsville, Alabama.
Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, where Services will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Kenneth Gifford officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove.
