Mary Elizabeth Johnson, 100, formerly of New Concord, Ohio, died Sunday, February 26, 2006 at First Community Village Health Care Center in Columbus. She was born March 10, 1905 on the family farm near Powhatan Point , Ohio , eldest daughter of the late John McFadden Johnson and Nancy Ramsay (Shannon) Johnson.
She began her career as a high school teacher of English in Moundsville , West Virginia and Martins Ferry, Ohio. From 1944 until her retirement in 1972, she was a faculty member at Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio in Speech Communication & Theatre. Countless people benefited from her dedicated work as an educator, theatre director, public speaker, and speech therapist.
She was a member of College Drive Presbyterian Church in New Concord. She was humble before God, as expressed in one of her favorite poems, "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two younger sisters, Ruth Ellen Johnson and Nancy Shannon (Johnson) Brown.
Surviving are her nephew, Eric R. Brown of Houston, Texas, two great nephews, a great great niece, two great great nephews, and several cousins.
In retirement, she enjoyed keeping up with current events and sharing stories about her life experiences with family, friends, and Village staff.
Visitors will be received on Thursday, March 9th beginning at 1:00 p. m. at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio. A service will be held there at 2:00 p. m. with the Reverend Tom Houston of College Drive Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow at Powhatan Cemetery.
