"Together with her loving family, Mary Jo Marsh Hammond, 86, peacefully passed away on April 7, 2024, in North Carolina. Formerly a resident of Woodsfield, Ohio, her legacy lives on through cherished memories shared by those who knew her."
She was born February 21, 1938, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, a daughter of the late George F. Marsh, Elizabeth Poulain Marsh Shopper and Stepfather Joseph Shopper.
Mary Jo was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and mother to many foster children and foreign exchange students. She was a former owner of Hammond's American Service Station in Dilles Bottom and Powhatan Point. She retired from Trombino's Music Store and C.A. House. She was a member of the Woodsfield Presbyterian Church; the Woodsfield EMS; Center Grange #2438; Monroe County Pomona #23; Powhatan VFW Auxiliary; and the Pythians Sisters.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Jack R. Hammond Sr., daughter Paula Jo Prince, son Jack R. Hammond Jr. and a sister, Patty Lowe.
Mary Jo is survived by her six children, Beth (Gary) Brunner, Tammy (Tom) Henderson, George (Karen) Hammond, Diana (Kris) VanCamp, David (Kiley) Hammond, and Whitney "Shawn" Hammond; a brother, Robert George Marsh; a sister, Beverly Jean Ronyak; 14 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and adopted family Rusty and Kristina Atkinson.
Family and friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio on Friday April 12, 2024, from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m., with Katie Cox, Zachary Hammond and George Hammond officiating. The burial will follow in Powhatan Cemetery.
We will continue honoring her life at the Parish Hall in Powhatan.
