Obituary

Lee R. Marshall, Commander USN (Ret.) passed away on April 28, 2023, in Rockville, MD. He was born in Caldwell, Ohio on March 1, 1926, to the late Rev. Daryl C. and Hannah Marshall.

In February 1930, his family moved to Flushing, OH where he graduated from high school in 1944. He enlisted in the Naval Aviation Cadet program February 1944 and reported for duty in July of that same year. World War II ended prior to his completion of training. After enlisting in the Naval Reserve, he was placed in the Inactive Reserve and was discharged from active duty on July 1, 1946. In September 1946, he enrolled at Washington and Jefferson College (W&J) graduating in May 1948. Upon graduation from W&J he reentered the U.S. Navy and was commissioned as an Ensign and given orders to report to flight training in Pensacola, FL. Upon completion of flight training in March 1950 at Corpus Christi, TX he received his Naval Aviation Wings and was ordered for further training at San Diego, CA. While in training in San Diego the Korean War broke out in June 1950. Lee was ordered to duty in Patrol Squadron 47 (VP-47) and moved to the Naval Air Station, Alameda, CA. While in VP-47 he completed two tours of duty in the Korean theatre. Lee remained in service to the Navy for 31 years. His duties included flight instructor, aircraft carrier catapult and arresting gear officer, Early Warning Aircraft Commander, and Naval Station Operations Officer. Lee retired from the Naval service on June 30, 1975, with the rank of Commander U.S.N. During his brief retirement Lee enjoyed hunting waterfowl and deer on the Eastern Shore of Maryland; and in the fall of 1976 he enrolled in the Aviation Technician program at the Frederick Community College (FCC) in Frederick, MD. Upon completion of the program, he received his Airframe and Powerplant License and was employed as an instructor in the same program. Lee retired from FCC in June of 1987.

In 1997 Lee moved back to Flushing, OH where he enjoyed playing golf with many friends. He served on the Admin Council of the Flushing Methodist Church, and for many years was Finance Officer of Post 366 of the American Legion. Lee was a life member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), the American Legion, the VFW, and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He was also a member of the Thoburn UMC, the Belmont Hills Country Club, the Ruritan Club, and Senior Citizens Club of Flushing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Howell Marshall, his second wife Marjorie Murphy Marshall, his sister Ruth Hamill, and a grandson.

He is survived by his four sons John (Debra), George (Karen, dec.), Peter (Gayle), James (Ruby); five grandsons, two granddaughters, five great grandchildren; and two stepsons, Gary Murphy (Janet), David Murphy (Nancy).

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, May 11, 2023 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 am at Thoburn United Methodist Church, St. Clairsville with Rev. David St. Aubin officiating. Burial will follow in Rock Hill Cemetery, Flushing. Full Military Honors will be conducted graveside by the Belmont County Veterans Association.
