Matis, Joseph Michael Sr., age 90, of St. Clairsville, died Friday, July 24, 2008 at his home.
He was born on March 27, 1918 at Maynard, Ohio, son of the late John Anthony Matis and Mary Benitz Matis.
Joseph was a retired employee of Consolidation Coal Company's Franklin Mine. He was a Catholic by faith. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and a life-member of the Disabled American Veterans in Bellaire.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Michael Matis.
Surviving are his two sons, Joseph Michael Matis Jr. and Brent Matthew Matis both of St. Clairsville; a daughter, Denise Nester of Morristown; a brother, John Matis of St. Clairsville; four sisters, Helen Teribury of Pendleton, Oregon, Madelyn Melet of St. Clairsville, Ann Doleski of Lansing and Rose Timko of Barton; 4 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville. A private committal service will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.
