Major, John J., 93 of Barton, Ohio died Friday, April 27, 2012 at Liza's Place in Wheeling, WV.
He was born September 22, 1918 in Crescent, Ohio, the son of the late John and Rose Simon Major.
He was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Colerain, Ohio, an Army veteran of WWII, and member of American Legion Post 159 and the VFW of St. Clairsville.
John was a barber in St. Clairsville for over 40 years, working with his best friend, Francis Slevin. Years later John and Francis partnered with Bud Ray.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine DeMeter Major; a sister, Irene Major Aleva; two nieces, infant Sylvia Rose Aleva and toddler niece Sylvia Rose Aleva.
He is survived by his niece, Irene (Ron) Aleva Dunder of St. Clairsville; nephew, John (Joyce) Aleva of Allen Park, Michigan; niece, Doreen (Tom) DeMeter Brennan of St. Clairsville; nephew, E.J. (Jennifer) DeMeter of Harrisville, Ohio; great nieces, Shaunna (Justin) Dunder Hershberger of Wheeling, WV., Rhonda Dunder of Pataskala, Ohio, Renee (Paul) Metropoulos and Charlene (Ricardo) Danich of Allen Park, Michigan; great nephews, John (Carmen) Aleva of Chagrin Falls, and Bryan (Lisa) Aleva of Canton, Michigan; great great nieces and nephews, Ava, Amelia, and Aric Danich, Justin and Luke Metropoulus, Jacob, Joshua, and Matthew Aleva, Nick, Alex, Frank and Jack Aleva, Kya and Jaina DeMeter, Jesse, Jakob, and Jolen Brannan; also his beloved cats, Snoopy and Twinkles; and his neighbor's dog, Bo.
Friends will be received at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m.
A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Frances Cabrini Church in Colerain with Father Dale Tornes the celebrant. Burial follows in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.
A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in the funeral home.
Belmont County Council of American Legions will provide full military honors following the mass at approximately 10:45 a.m at the church.
