Obituary

SGT (RET) James “Jim” Lester Garrett, also known as “Cuz”, 77, of Flushing, Ohio, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Wheeling Hospital. He was born October 10, 1948, in Bannock, Ohio, a son of the late Tom and Esther Shuman Garrett.

Jim was a retired coal miner who dedicated many years of service to the former Consol Coal mines. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and remained committed to his community throughout his life. Jim was a past member of the National Rifle Association, the United Mine Workers of America, a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 626, American Legion Post 52, and the former 463rd Engineers Honor Guard in Bellaire. He also served as a member of the Lafferty Fire Department and was a faithful member of the House of the Shepherd Church in New Athens.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Carl “Tommy” Garrett; sisters, Margaret “Polly” Butler, Olive Carroll, Ruth Hammond, Imogene “Junie” Jeaujue, Ethel Garrett, and infant sister, Geraldine Garrett.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Karen Burroughs Garrett; children, Dennis Jendrusik, Darrell (Stephanie) Jendrusik, Denise Weekley, and Dale Jendrusik; grandchildren, Wendy (Chris) Pugh, Lyndzie (Garrett) Lay, Kelsay Garvin, Steven (Carrie) Jendrusik, Billie Jo (Jimmy) Rice, and Lance (Alexis) Jendrusik; 12 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Edna (Sam) Barr, Mary (Joe McCammon) Whitacre, and Jo (Kenny) Warner.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday July 9, 2026, at Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville from 4-8pm where funeral services will be held on Friday July 10, 2026, at 11 am with Pastor Jamie Price officiating. Burial will follow in Longview Cemetery, New Athens, Ohio, where Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Belmont County Veterans Association.
