Obituary

Jerry Elwood Belyea, born on March 8, 1937, in Port Huron, Michigan, passed away on April 6, 2025, at the age of 88.  Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather whose brilliant mind, quick wit and warm presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Jerry is a graduate of the University of Michigan where he majored in Physics in both his graduate and undergraduate programs.  It was there that he started on his career path in electromagnetic theory, with emphasis on theoretical radar cross section analysis, diagnostics and control for aircraft, missiles and space objects.

During his career he provided support to DARPA, mostly in sensor systems execution of sensitive R&D programs, leading to successful transition to the Military Services and National Security communities.  He cofounded Decision-Science Applications Inc. where he worked as Vice President and Director of the Radar Division.  He directed technical support for DARPA, USAF and the intelligence community providing space-based sensor design and analysis. Later while at the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM), as Vice President, Washington Operations, he coordinated and directed support to the Washington-based Intelligence Community, and directed world-wide Anti-Submarine Warfare experiments under a Congressionally-initiated program managed first by DARPA, then by OSD/C3I, with emphasis on sensor technology; he also managed sensor design and deployment to the Discoverer II program.

He always enjoyed spending any down time with his family including his loyal German Shepherd dogs, gardening at his country home on the Maryland Eastern Shore and in later years after relocating to the Tampa area, enjoyed his retirement in the warmer climate and traveling to his favorite spots with his wife Ann.

Jerry leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory.  He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ann Conway Belyea, his children: Melissa Ann Gibson and her husband Ralph Gibson, Jr., Melanie Belyea Crutchfield, and John Jacob Belyea; and his adored grandchildren: Caleb Gibson, Grace Gibson, Seth Gibson, Emma Carmack, William Crutchfield, Caroline Crutchfield, James Crutchfield, Robert Minnich, Alexzandra Kirkland, Abriella Belyea Casciani; and his great-grandson Arthur Belyea Casciani.

He is preceded in death by his father, Donald McClellan Belyea and mother, Hazel Caroline Elwood.

In keeping with Jerry's wishes there will be no public services.  The family has entrusted Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, OH with all funeral arrangements.  He will be laid to rest at the Lakeside Cemetery in Port Huron, Michigan.
