Idella S. "Della" Demkowicz, 83, known lovingly to her family as "Bubs" died peacefully at the Stow Glen Retirement Center on August 20, 2003.
She was born in McKees Rocks, PA on January 8, 1920 to Mike and Stella Pytlak. She lived most of her life in Neffs until relocating to Brimfield, OH in 1991. Her husband, Fred, died in 1981.
She was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Neffs where she had belonged to the Catholic Women?s Club, the St. Francis Society, the church choir and the CCD teaching ministry. She served her community as library clerk in the Neffs Public Library for twelve years before retiring to travel with her husband.
Della?s greatest joy in life was her family. She took pride in their accomplishments, encouraging them to pursue higher education. Being denied the opportunity of a high school education because of the Great Depression era only heightened Della?s zeal for learning. She role modeled life long learning by studying for and acquiring an Ohio GED Certificate at the age of 72. Later she attended classes at Kent State University. In 2002 she and daughters Judy and Marcia graduated from the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, the oldest Book Club in the country.
In addition to her husband of 42 years, she was preceded in death by brothers Alex and Ronald and sister Helen.
Della is survived by sisters, Josephine (Ed) Jagucki of St.Clairsville, Clara (Robert) Patt of Shadyside; brothers, Carl (Wilma) Pytlak of Shadyside, Marion (Doris) Pytlak of St.Clairsville, Ed (Louise) Pytlak of Reedsville, NC; sisters-in-law, Agnes Pytlak of Bellaire, Mary (John) Bryan of Cuyahoga Falls, and Ann Macklin of Sylmar, CA; children, Judy (Richard) Hendershot of Brimfield, Marcia (Robert) Gnuse of Arlington, VA, Carol (Joseph) Glaser of Bowling Green, KY; son, John (Debbie) Demkowicz of Canal Winchester; grandchildren, Lynn (Gary) Gelina, Lisa (Dave) Nutt, Steven (Yumi) Hendershot, Adam (Heather) Glaser, Michael (Sara) Glaser, David Gnuse, Janet Gnuse, Jason Demkowicz, (Mary Beth) and Fred Demkowicz; great grandchildren, Rebecca, Ericka, Aria, Gibson, Michael Joseph "MJ", and twins, Anna and Mia.
Friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home in St.Clairsville on Thursday from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Neffs with Father Gary Zalenski the celebrant. Burial follows in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Bellaire.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sacred Heart Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 425, Neffs, Ohio 43940.
There will be a Rosary Service at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in the funeral home.
