Helen Sophia (Paszke) Fijalkowski, age 101 of Columbus, formerly of Neffs and Cambridge, Ohio died January 13, 2016.
Preceeded in death by parents, John and Rose L. Paszke; husband, Henry Fijalkowski; sisters, Laura Plahuta and Frances Vaughan; and brothers, John, Frank, and Stanley Paszke.
She is survived by daughter, Janice Macián and son-in-law, José Macián, Worthington, Ohio; grandaughter, Dr. Diana Macián and great-granddaughter, Isabella Maria Macián-Reed, Alexandria, Virginia; grandson, José Enrique Macián, Brighton, England; nephews, nieces, and treasured friends.
She loved all her family and was proud of them and their accomplishments. Upon graduating in 1930 from Bellaire High School during the Depression, she was employed by the YWCA in Wheeling, WV until the beginning of World War II, when she enlisted in the Army and proudly served as Staff Sargent in the European Theater until October 1945. In March, 1946 she and her fiancé, Henry, also a World War II veteran, were married and moved to Cambridge, Ohio. There, they built the Mecca Drive-In Restaurant, catering to the teenagers of the 50s and early 60s generation. Helen was also a personnel manager at the Guernsey Memorial Hospital for several years before her final career as realtor and broker, retiring in 1996. She was an active member and volunteer in community and church affairs and a long-term member of St. Benedict Church, Cambridge, before moving to Columbus where she was a member of St. Andrews Church.
A Memorial Service will be held 2:30 pm Sunday, January 17, 2016 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAEPL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., where family and friends may visit from 1:30- 2:30 pm Sunday. Monsignor Stephan Moloney, of St. Andrew Parish officiating.
Private interment services at Union Cemetery, St. Clairesville, Ohio took place on Monday, Jan. 18.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution in Helen's memory may be made to OhioHealth Hospice/Kobacker House.
