Halley Newland, age 86, of Martins Ferry, died Monday, July 19, 2004 at Bishop Joseph Hodges Continuous Care Center in Wheeling. He was born November 13, 1917 at Martins Ferry, son of the late John K. Newland and Mary Esque Newland Upperman.
He was retired owner and operator of Halley Newland and Sons General Contractors. Halley was a Presbyterian by faith; a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II serving on the U. S. S. Romulus in the Pacific Theatre; a member of the American Legion Post # 38, at Martins Ferry; VFW Post 5356 at St. Clairsville; the Martins Ferry Elks Lodge # 895; and the Martins Ferry Lions Club.
Surviving are his wife, Janet Hammel Newland; two sons, Dan Newland and his wife Wendy of Pleasant Grove, Ohio and John Newland of the home; a daughter, Laura Newland of White Oak, Pennsylvania; and a granddaughter; Leah Newland.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 2 p.m. until time of services at 6 p.m. at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio, with Rev. John A. Brown officiating. Private graveside services will be held at Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove, Ohio with Full Military Graveside Honors to be conducted by the Belmont County Council of American Legions.
The American Legion will have services on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and the Martins Ferry Elk?s will conduct services on Thursday at 5:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
