Gerald James "Spike" Hendershot, 96, of Jacobsburg, Ohio, died March 21, 2023 in East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry.
He was born July 13, 1926, in Bellaire, Ohio, a son of the late James B. and Alice Schnegg Hendershot.
Spike was a retired serviceman from the former Wheeling Electric, currently AEP and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, a member of the American Legion in Neffs, the CSA Lodge #310 in Bellaire and the Bridgeport Lions Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-grandson, John Stack II, and three sisters, Inez Laubacher, Helen Hoskinson, and Marjorie Soon.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Jean Small Civin Hendershot; four children, Lois (Dan) Ferryman, Carol (Steven) Riddle, Pam (Neil) Nyles and Jerry (Sue) Hendershot; four stepchildren, Cathy (John) Stack, John E. Civin Jr., Christy (Sam) Ritchie, and Diane Civin; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and step great-great grandchildren.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio, where services will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove, Ohio with Full Military Honors conducted by the Belmont County Veterans Association.
