Sayre, George W. Jr., 79, of St. Clairsville, Ohio died Friday, September 18, 2009 at Cumberland Pointe Nursing Home.

He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on November 5, 1929, son of the late George Walter Sayre and Ida Marie Spires Sayre.

George retired from the Wheeling News Register after 42 years of service with the company. He was a former Ohio County Deputy Sheriff; Wheeling Park Ranger; and former Chief of Police at Bethlehem. George was a member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church in St. Clairsville and a former member of the Eagles Aerie # 344 in Wheeling.

He is survived by his wife of years, Alice Carole Feigenbaum Sayre; 5 children, Christine Fordyce Hanson of Dothan, Alabama, Stephen Sayre of Bethlehem, West Virginia, Zita Lee of St. Clairsville, George Timothy Sayre of Tacoma, Washington and Brian Sayre of Cambridge, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Anna Smith of Mt. Olivet and Catherine Bradford of Wheeling; several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until time of services at 1 p.m. at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville with Father Bradley Greer officiating. Burial will follow in Halcyon Hills Memorial Gardens.
