George Kourkounakis, age 71, of Bridgeport, Ohio, formerly of Holloway, died Sunday, January 26, 2003 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, WV. He was born on February 8, 1931 at Holloway, Ohio, son of the late Michael and Evangelina Mopehlia Kourkounakis.

He was a retired employee of 39 years from R. & F. Coal Company at Cadiz, OH where he retired in 1994; served as Mayor of Holloway for many years; worked at the Holloway Water Department; and was a volunteer at the Wheeling Greek Festival.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Betty Bethel Kourkounakis; his son, George David Kourkounakis and his wife Betty of Dover, OH; three daughters, Becky Kourkounakis of Columbus, OH, Linda K. Hines and her husband Kenny of Holloway and April Smith and her husband Charles of Hagerstown, MD; a brother, Manuel Kirk and his wife Dody of Holloway; a sister, Mary Stergiou and her husband Pete of Parma, OH; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Friends will be received at Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with a Trisagion Service to be conducted by Father Papageorgiou at 2 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Gary Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Rock Hill Cemetery, Flushing, Ohio.
