Obituary

Edward Slavik, 95, died Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at Forest Hills Nursing Home in St.Clairsville, OH. He was born May 11, 1922 in Blaine, Ohio, the first of 4 children to Emil and Suzanna Hutira Slavik. Ed lived most of his life in Blaine and moved to St.Clairsville in 2008.

He was a 1940 graduate of Bridgeport High School. In World War II, he enlisted into the Army Air Corps, serving with the Eighth Air Force in England as a B-17 crew chief. He was a member of the Blaine All Saints Catholic Church, which he helped build and maintain until it was closed. Ed was an accomplished woodworker and worked as a finish carpenter for F.H. Vincenzo and Sons. He also worked with Wheeling Steel at the Martins Ferry plant. He re-entered the steel industry with Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel at the Beech Bottom Plant where he was a foreman until he retired. He was a member of the VFW Post # 8848 in Colerain, OH.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary, died in 1932. His wife of 62 years, Irene Kubic Slavik, died in 2012, and their son Edward J. Slavik died in 2011.

He is survived by 3 children: daughters Susan Douglass and Mary (Gary) Griffith, of St.Clairsville; son Stephen Slavik of New Albany, OH; 8 grandchildren: Rebecca Griffith, Jennifer (E.B.) Davis, Louis Griffith, Edward Justin Slavik, Nathaniel (Nadia) Slavik, Suzi (Jakub Burkot) Slavik, Ellen Slavik, Isabella Slavik; 3 great-grandchildren: Landon, Sienna, and Brielle Slavik. He also leaves 2 brothers: John (Charlotte) Slavik, Emil (D.J.) Slavik, and sister-in-law Rose Kubic; numerous nieces and nephews.

Ed was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Clairsville, where visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 13 from 9:30 am until time of Funeral Liturgy with Mass at 11:00 am, with Father Thomas Chillog the celebrant of the Mass of Christian Burial. Graveside services and military honors conducted by the Belmont County Veterans Association will follow at Linwood Cemetery, Blaine, OH. Ed's Family thanks the staff of Forest Hills Nursing Home for their care and attention to him these last 3 years.
