KOWALCZYK, Edward J., of Maynard, Ohio, went home to be with Jesus, his Lord and Savior, on May 11, 2008 at East Ohio Regional Hospital. He was born July 19, 1921 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, the son of the late Joseph and Anna Lojas Kowalczyk.
He was a retired General Mine Forman at Saginaw Mine - Oglebay Norton, St. Clairsville. During World War II he served in the Navy as an Aviation Machinist?s Mate in the Philippines. He was a member of the Maynard American Legion Post 666 and the Polish National Alliance. He was a founding member and past fire chief of Maynard Community Volunteer Fire Department. He attended Maynard Methodist Church, where he worked on several church building projects.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Blanche Spisak and brothers, Benjamin, Walter and Joseph Kowalczyk.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Louise Kolb Kowalczyk; daughters Susan (Rick) Stepputtis of St. Clairsville and Sheila Kowalczyk of Georgetown and sisters Helen Mihalic and Anne Soukup both of Maynard.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville. Visitation again on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to time of services at 11 a.m. in the Maynard Methodist Church with Pastor James Hildebrand officiating. Belmont County Council of American Legion?s will conduct military honors at 10:45 a.m. Interment in Holly Memorial Gardens will follow.
