Obituary

Charles Herbert Bean, Esquire, 76, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family following his battle with ALS.

He was born May 4, 1947, in Athens, Ohio, a son of the late Elnor Irene Wright Bean-Dietrich and Clinton Bean.

Charlie had a passion for sports and played basketball in a men's league for many years. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan and would follow those teams all over the country. However, his love of his family, especially his three grandsons was unmatched.

Charles worked as an Iron Worker for seven years and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was an Ohio State Law School Graduate with his Juris Doctorate Degree. His operated the Thornburg and Bean Law office in St. Clairsville through May of 2023. He was a very active member of Thoburn United Methodist Church having served on all the committees and was Chair of Church Council, he served many years and was Chairman on the Board of Directors at Belmont Savings Bank; was an adjunct professor at Ohio University; was Chairman of the St. Clairsville Planning Commission and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Zoning Appeals.

Charlie's extensive law career was quite impressive and some of his accomplishments were:  having served as Law Director in Shadyside and the village of Powhatan Point; was the Assistant Prosecutor in Monroe County; he was President of the Belmont County Bar Association; was a member of the United States Supreme Court Bar Association 6th Circuit; a member of the Ohio Supreme Court Bar Association where he served on the Board of Governors; was Chairman of the Government Affairs Committee; Commissioner of the Ohio Supreme Court 7th Appellate District;. Charlie also served as the legal counsel for North American Coal, Marietta Coal, REA and Belmont Electric.

In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by a stepfather, Waldo Dietrich; aunt, Mildred; and recently by his brother, Walter C. Bean.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Linda Dunn Bean; three children, Brian (Anita) Bean, Becky Bean, and Mark Bean; three grandchildren, Charles, James, and Howard Bean; a sister, Helen M. (Larry) Datkuliak; a sister-in-law, Barbara Bean; nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Thoburn United Methodist Church, 209 East Main Street in St. Clairsville, where services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m., with Pastors Dave St. Aubin and Bill Wendell officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville with Full Military Honors conducted by the Belmont County Veterans Association.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Clairsville Athletic Department or the River Local Athletic Department.
