Obituary

Carol L. LaPosta, 82, of Lafferty, OH passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at Emerald Pointe Nursing Home, in Barnesville, OH.  She was born June 3, 1941, in Burgettstown, PA., and was the beloved daughter of the late Herman and Ruth Pettibon LaPosta.

Carol was a retired career High School teacher, first of French and then of Math and Technology.  She took countless students on trips to France and Canada, New England and more.  Carol created her school's first technology center.  Carol was a School Teacher for the Union Local School District and a member of First New Athens Presbyterian Church.  She was a member of State Teacher's Retirement System.  Carol served for several years on the Flushing Village Counsel before serving as Mayor of Flushing from 1990-2004.  That tenure, along with two previous terms, totaled approximately 19 years as Mayor.  Carol served as treasurer of the former Crossroads Parrish of New Athens, past President of Union Local Education Association, a member and past Secretary of Flushing Ruritan Association and a member of Flushing Business Association.  She was most recently employed by Leonardo Technologies Inc. (LTI).

Service to others guided Carol in her life from a very early age.  She moved in with her grandparents to care for them at the age of 14, and from that point on made it her business to take care of other family members, community and friends, in large and small ways.  A member of a large and loving family, Carol was the youngest of 13 cousins.  She was very close to these first cousins, their spouses and their children and grandchildren.  She had a tight knit group of good friends from her college days with whom she gathered until very recently.  Her students are found in every walk of life.  Carol spent countless hours organizing community events and charitable fundraisers.

In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her sister, Connie Smith.  Also surviving Carol are dear friend, Patti Spengler of Jerusalem, OH, a former student and fellow teacher.  She is also survived by first cousins, Freida Hollihan, Evelyn Burnham, and Dolores Sasway.  Carol leaves behind many second and third cousins whose lives she enriched and who loved her deeply and will miss her dearly.
