Robert C. "Bob" Thornton, 92 of Pickerington, Ohio former long time resident of Bellaire died Sunday, April 16, 2006 at Mt. Carmel East Medical Center in Columbus.
He was born at Glencoe on February 12, 1914 a son of the late Matthew and Sarah Robson Thornton.
Bob retired from Windsor Power House Coal with 40 years of service. He served the city of Bellaire as Safety Director and a Councilman for many years and served as president of UMWA Local 6362 for 15 years. He was a member of the West Bellaire United Methodist Church, Bridgeport Eagles for 65 years, Bellaire Elks for 50 years, UMWA for 70 years, MEMEA and the Forest Hill Community Association for 50 years. Bob was also a life member of Ionic Lodge #438 F.& A.M. at Bellaire and the Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Masonic Bodies of the Valley of Steubenville.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son Ronald Thornton; a daughter Virginia Lee Thornton; brothers George, Joe, Russell, William and Franklin; sisters Victoria Webb, Mary McMahon and Mildred Yeager.
He is survived by his wife Margaret L. Masters Thornton; daughters Laura Davis of Grove City, Ohio, Dorothy Smithers of Las Vegas, Nevada and Jeanne Postage of Pickerington, Ohio; 17 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren including a set of twin girls and a set of quadruplets 2 boys and 2 girls and 1 great great grandchild.
Friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville on Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Harry Pettini officiating. Burial will follow in Davis Cemetery, Bellaire.
