Obituary

William J. "Bill" Taylor, Sr., 85 of St. Clairsville passed away peacefully at Ohio Valley Medical Center on Saturday, January 3, 2004.

He was born in Armstrongs Mills, Ohio on May 6, 1918, a son of the late George and Mary McMaster Taylor. Also preceding him in his death were eight brothers and sisters. Bill married Helen Dunlap on March 31, 1947 who survives him along with his sister Mary Porterfield of St. Clairsville; two sons and daughters-in-law William "Jeff", Jr and Noreen of Reynoldsburg; Michael and Kimberly of Ashville; his daughter Susan of St. Clairsville; four grandsons, Cory and Camron Taylor, James and Jerry McAfee; a great granddaughter Madyson McAfee and many nieces and nephews.

Bill joined the First Presbyterian Church in St. Clairsville in 1935 where he was a long time member of the choir up until 2001. His love of music lead him to become a member of St. Clairsville?s first ever high school band in the 1930?s and he remained a member in the St. C. Alumni Association. Bill also was one of the first members of Barb?s Boys, a local singing group that was near and dear to his heart.

He was one of the original members of the St. Clairsville Lions Club and a charter member of the St. Clairsville Saints Club that he helped to form in 1941. He was honored just this fall by the Saints Club for his role as a founding member.

Before moving home to St. Clairsville in 1971, Bill and his family resided in Cadiz where he was active in the Presbyterian Church as well as local civic organizations. He retired from Consol Coal in 1980 after forty years of service to the mining industry, having operated the Mountaineer Shovel for many of those years.

Family and friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to time of service at 1 p.m. with Rev. Homer Harden officiating. Burial will follow at Belmont Memorial Park at St. Clairsville.
