Obituary

Barbara A. Applegarth (maiden name Gilmore), passed away March 21, 2018, at Riverside Methodist Hospital surrounded by her daughters and granddaughters.  Barbara was born in 1937 in Wheeling, WV.

Survived by her loving daughters, Marsha Fuquay of Dublin, Cheryl Applegarth Ward of Powell, Ohio, three precious granddaughters, Rachel (25), Mariah (21) and Brooke (20), former son in law Frank, as well as many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Wayne.

Barbara graduated from Muskingum College with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Sociology and Psychology.  She was a proud member of the FA&D Sorority. Barbara was an accomplished classical pianist, and was also a synchronized swimmer in college, as well as a lifeguard at the Allen Pool in St Clairsville, OH.  She started her career as a teacher in Belmont County, OH, Board of Developmental Disabilities ultimately moving to Columbus to work for the Franklin County BDD, as a principal at first, Alum Crest and then Holy Family schools. She returned to the program in later years to work at West Central School. Barbara was also a breast cancer survivor of 15 years.

Barbara was an incredibly capable and amazing caregiver to her husband Wayne, who had received a heart transplant in 1992, enabling him to become a loving "Papa" to all his girls for 12 more years.  She was also responsible for exposing two generations of her girls to camping, swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, and exploring the caves of the Hocking Hills region at our campsite at Lost Hollow campgrounds in Logan, OH.  'Nana' was a big part of involving her granddaughters in choirs, both at the Lost Hollow church and at school.  She spent plenty of time listening to each of their instruments of choice during school years which included entertaining tones from the viola, the saxophone, and the violin.  Nana loved her some scary movies and she spent many a night with her granddaughters, eating popcorn, screaming, and laughing!

A special thank you to the nurses at Riverside Methodist Hospital in the Palliative Care Unit for the loving care and attention they showed us all.
