Asel Alexander "Alex" Gabel Jr., 77, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, died January 16, 2023, in Wheeling Hospital.

He was born February 1, 1945, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, a son of the late Asel A. Gabel Sr. and Kathrena I. Dorsch Gabel.

Alex was a retired employee from Mantech in Fairmont, WV and a former employee of NCR in Cambridge, Ohio. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and member of First Presbyterian Church in St. Clairsville. Alex enjoyed OSU Buckeyes football, golfing, swimming, gardening and working in his yard.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Suzie Gabel.

Alex is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Jean Mowrer Gabel; two sons, David Alexander Gabel and Brian Allen Gabel and son-in-law, Ryan Hall; a sister, Nancy K. Richardson; a brother, George D. Gabel; nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 2 – 4 & 6 – 8 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, with Full Military Honors conducted at 7:45 p.m. by the Belmont County Veterans Association. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with Father Thomas Chillog officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary's Catholic Church or OSU James Cancer Hospital.
