Obituary

Dr. Angelo John (A.J.) Antalis, 89 of Shadyside, Ohio; long time area physician, passed away Friday, May 11, 2007 at Trinity West Hospital in Steubenville, Ohio.

Dr. Antalis was born June 4, 1917, in Weirton, WV, a son of the late John and Stasia (Kyriazoglou) Antalis. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Life-Giving Fountain, Martins Ferry, Ohio.

He graduated as valedictorian of his class at Weir High School in 1935. After graduation from West Virginia University he received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He served his internship at Philadelphia General Hospital, Philadelphia, PA.

After serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II, he completed his residency at Huron Road Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1946 he opened the Powhatan Clinic in Powhatan Point, Ohio, before he and his brother, Dr. James P. Antalis, established the Shadyside Clinic in Shadyside, Ohio in 1966. Dr. Antalis served as Chief of Staff at Bellaire City Hospital for over 30 years and he continued practicing medicine until 2002, accomplishing a medical career that spanned 56 years.

His affiliations included serving as a two-term potentate of the Osiris Shrine in 1974 and 1977 and was a member of the Royal Order of Jesters #13 of Wheeling. Dr. Antalis was honored as a 33rd Degree Mason by the Scottish Rite Bodies. He was instrumental in the organization of the Osiris Shrine Indian Patrol in Powhatan Point, Ohio. He was chairman of the Belmont County Lung Association, he initiated the first Belmont County Heart Fund Ball in 1966 and continued to serve as chairman for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen McClusky Antalis (whom he married in 1950) on January 13, 2007; a sister, Liberty Antalis in 1977; a son-in-law David Rucker and a sister-in-law, Erma Antalis.

He is survived by a son, John Thomas (Sharon) Antalis of Indiana, PA.; daughters Terry Antalis Rucker and Cathy Antalis of Shadyside; three granddaughters, Angela Rucker of Shadyside, Alyssa Antalis of Indiana, PA and Alexis Antalis of San Jose, California.

Survivors also include three brothers; Steve Antalis of Charleston, SC; Stanley (Tina) Antalis of Fort Wayne, IN and Dr. James (Teddy) Antalis of The Villages, Florida; one sister, Mary Antalis Georges of Shadyside; numerous nieces and nephews including local residents, Dr. Angelo Georges of Wheeling and Stacey Georges Ritter of Shadyside.

There will be no visitation. A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Life-Giving Fountain, 314 N. 5th Street, Martins Ferry, Ohio 43935.
