SMITH, Benny Franklin, 68, of Hilton Head, South Carolina, went to be with the Lord with his family by his side on February 18, 2012 at his home.
He was born in Armstrongs Mills, Ohio on June 2, 1943, son of Vera Gast Smith and the late Delbert Crawford Smith.
Benny was retired from North American Coal Co. # 1 Mine and former employee of Piper Plumbing and York Township. He was a U.S. Army Veteran; a member of Glencoe American Legion Post 632 and a member of Hilton Head Bible Baptist Church.
Surviving are his loving wife, Irene Jackson Smith; his mother Vera Heightland of Powhatan Point; a son, Frank Wayne Smith of Summerville, South Carolina; a daughter, Candy K. Howells of Powhatan Point, Ohio; a granddaughter, Nova Leigh Smith; a sister, Rosalee Rodewald of Mentor, Ohio; 7 brothers, Mike Smith of Powhatan Point, Delano Gillespie of Neffs, Donald Gillespie of Bluffton, South Carolina, Ronald Gillespie of Miami, Florida, George Heightland of Powhatan Point, Roy Heightland of Clarington and Daniel Heightland of Bluffton, South Carolina.
Family and friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home in Jacobsburg on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., where services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dennis Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Powhatan Cemetery.
Belmont County Council of American Legions will conduct Full Military Honors on Thursday at 10:45 a.m. in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Powhatan Point.
