IRENE ALEVA

 Irene Major Aleva, 87 of Crescent Road, St. Clairsville died Thursday, September 2, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry.

She was born at Crescent, Ohio on June 10, 1917 a daughter of the late John Major, Sr. and Rose Simon Major.

Irene was a homemaker and a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Maynard, Ohio.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Aleva and two daughters, Sylvia Rose Aleva and Sylvia Rose Aleva.

She is survived by a daughter, Irene Aleva Dunder and her husband Ron with whom she resided; a son, John L. Aleva, Sr. and his wife Joyce of Allen Park, Michigan; a brother, John Major, Jr. of Barton, Ohio; 6 grandchildren, Shaunna Dunder, Rhonda Dunder, John L. Aleva, Jr. and his wife Carmen; Renee Aleva Metropoulos and her husband Paul; Bryan Aleva and his wife Lisa and Charlene Aleva and her fiancee Ricardo Danich; 8 great grandchildren; Nick, Alex, Frank and Jack Aleva; Justin and Lucas Metropoulos; Jacob and Joshua Aleva; several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville with Vigil services at 3 p.m.  Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Maynard with Father Dennis Lyden the celebrant.  Burial follows at Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.

 

LOUIS ALEXANDER

Louis Alexander, age 87, of Lafferty, Ohio, died Monday, October 25, 2004 at his home. 

He was born May 9, 1917 at Lafferty, a son of the late Victor and Rose Agosti Alexander.

Louis was a retired highway inspector for Ohio Department of Transportation.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Lafferty; a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 5356 at St. Clairsville.

In addition to his parents, Louis was preceded in death by a brother, Rudy Alexander and two sisters, Alma Glavaris and Lena Mistovich.

Surviving are his wife, Jennie Manzoni Alexander; two daughters, Nancy Kidd and her husband Mike of Bannock and Nora Vcelka and her husband Butch of St. Clairsville; four grandchildren, Ricky Doty, Michael Kidd, Shonda Vcelka Bourquin and Scott Vcelka; four great granddaughters, Alli, Kayla, Madison and Sydney; and a sister, Ida Lucas of Barnesville.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville.  Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lafferty on Thursday, October 28, 2004 at 11 a.m., with Father Chester Pabin the celebrant.  Burial will follow at Rock Hill Cemetery, Flushing, Ohio.  

A Vigil Service will be held on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the funeral home.  Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Belmont County Council of VFW’s.

 

ROBERT E. ANTHONY, Sr.

Robert E. Anthony, Sr., 71 of Richwood Dr., St. Clairsville died Saturday, November 27, 2004 in Wheeling Hospital.

He was born February 27, 1933 in Brookside, a son of the late Earl Anthony and Frances Waugh Anthony Santis.

He was a retired truck driver, member of the Teamsters local 697 and an Army veteran of the Korean war.

Surviving are his wife Ruth Neitzelt Anthony; a son, Robert E. Anthony, Jr. at home; a brother, James O. Anthony of Plymouth, Michigan; a sister, Lois Finney of Sandusky, Ohio;

Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Glencoe Cemetery with Elder John E. Oliver, Jr. officiating.

JOHN BAILEY, Sr.

John William “Little John” Bailey Sr., 57 of Lafferty died Saturday, April 10, 2004 at his home.

He was born January 8, 1947 in Rochester, PA. A son of the late Virginia Sykes Bailey.

He was a retired truck driver from Midwest Transit.

In addition to his mother , he was preceded in death by a brother, “Butch” Larry Bailey.

Surviving are his wife, Beverly DeLeau Bailey; children, John Jr. of Barnesville, Jackie (Klay) Bailey, Lori (Dave) Bailey, Cathy (Braden) McCardle all of Flushing, and Jason (Andrea) Bailey of Beallsville; sisters, Sandra Vickers of Neffs and Tammy Henley of Rochester, PA; brothers, Mike and Bob Bailey of St. Clairsville and Wayne Bailey; 9 grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. Burial follows in Richland Cemetery at East Richland, Ohio.

 

RAY BAKER

Ray L. Baker, 85 of Sand Hill Road, Bellaire died Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at Country Club Retirement Center, Bellaire.

He was born May 13, 1918 at Pipe Creek a son of the late Everett D. and Gertrude Rieff Baker.

Ray was a retired Engineering Inspector for the city of Orlando, Florida, a member of Shadyside Presbyterian Church and Ionic Lodge #438 F.& A.M. at Bellaire.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Jean Howell Baker and a brother, Bob Baker.

He is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call on Friday from 11 a.m. until time of services at 1:00 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville.  Burial will follow in the Jacobsburg Cemetery.

 

HELEN I. BECK

Helen I. Beck, age 79, of Shadyside, formerly of Jacobsburg, Ohio died Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at Shadyside Care Center, Shadyside, Ohio.

She was born May 23, 1925 at Pipe Creek, Ohio, daughter of the late Dwight H. (D.H.) Christy and Estella Willison Christy.

Helen was a retired sales representative for World Book Encyclopedia and Shaklee Vitamins; a homemaker; and a member of the Jacobsburg United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Beck; a son, Jerry Beck; and six brothers, Merritt, Kenneth, Guy, Carl, Bernard and Denzil Christy.

Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Cindy) Bickmeier of Shadyside, Ohio; a son, Edwin Beck of Canal Winchester, Ohio; three sisters, Beulah Bernosky of Dilles Bottom, Vera (Wallace) Perry of St. Clairsville and Shirley Crall of Rittman, Ohio; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Family and friends will be received at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m., where services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m., with Rev. Don Perks officiating.  Burial will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove.

RICHARD  L.  BELL

Richard Leroy Bell, 74 of Fairpoint, Ohio died Friday, January 9, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry. He was born on October 4, 1929 in Ware Shoals, South Carolina,  son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Monroe Jackson Bell.

He was a retired carpenter and a Catholic.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jean Patch Bell;  and a brother, John Bell.

Surviving are three daughters, Gloria Seevers of Blaine, Donna Deter of Fairpoint, and Amber Bell of Manassas, VA;  four sons, Fred Adams of Richmond, VA., Guy Adams of Illinois, Charles Eidson and Richard Alex Bell of Williamsburg, VA; 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

There will be no public visitation or service.

ELEANOR BELYK

Eleanor M. Belyk, 82 of Belmont, WV formerly of Warnock, OH died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at Camden Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg.

She was born at Warnock on November 3, 1921 a daughter of the late Joseph and Pearl West Psait.

Eleanor was a clerk at Foster’s Store in Warnock for many years and was a member of the Warnock Community Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Belyk; a sister, Wanda Foster and a brother, Ronald Psait.

Surviving are her son, Glenn Belyk of Belmont, WV; a sister Betty (Charles) Fulton of Warnock; 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Warnock Cemetery with burial following.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Warnock Community Church, Warnock, Ohio 43967.

BOSS BENNINGTON

Ewing “Boss” Bennington (Pap), 67 of Sycamore Street, Powhatan Point died Monday, April 12, 2004 at Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire.

He was born at Pipe Creek on March 18, 1937 a son of the late Hayes and Grace Weekley Bennington.

He was a retired laborer, a member of the Powhatan American Legion and an Air Force Veteran of the Korean War.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, William “Bill”, Don and Charles Bennington; sister, Nellie Maupin and a stepson, Shawn Folden.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara Fankhauser Bennington; a son William Kevin Smith of Kentucky; stepsons, Steve and Scott Folden both of Jacobsburg; brothers, Dale Bennington of Powhatan; Jim Bennington of Gnadenhutten, OH and Neil Bennington of Bellaire; sisters, Beulah Lightcap of Pennsylvania and Heln Milliron of Wisconsin; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on Friday from 11 a.m to time of services at 1 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, Jacobsburg.  Burial follows at the Jacobsburg Cemetery.

Military graveside services will be conducted by the Powhatan American Legion and VFW.

 

CRAIG BETHEL 

W. Craig Bethel, 96 of East Main Street, St. Clairsville died Monday, June 14, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry.

He was born near Flushing on June 23, 1907 a son of the late Otis O. Bethel and Mary Craig Bethel.

Craig was a retired insurance agent and realtor and was the former owner of the Bethel Agency at St. Clairsville.  He was a 59 year member of the St. Clairsville Noon Rotary Club with 53 years of perfect attendance.  Craig was the founder of the youth baseball program in St. Clairsville and was one of the original members of the Saints Club.  He was also a member of East Richland Friends Church, Belmont Lodge #16 F.& A.M., the Scottish Rite Valley of Cambridge and the Salvation Army Committee for St. Clairsville.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Lee McFarland Bethel; his second wife, Wilma Gross Sommer Bethel; two sisters, Floy Rinkes and Mildred Morris and a brother Dale Bethel.

Surviving are his sons, Richard Bethel of Cincinnati and Robert L. Bethel of St. Clairsville; stepdaughter, Sandra Svendsen of Wailuku, Hawaii; 6 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Friends will be received on Wednesday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville where services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Wayne Ickes officiating.  Burial will follow in the Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.

LAURA BILLMAN

Laura Elizabeth Billman, 19 of Plainfield Rd., St. Clairsville died Monday, July 12, 2004 at Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire.

She was born at Wheeling on August 19, 1984 a daughter of Gary and Janet Campbell Billman.

Laura was a 2002 graduate of Union Local High School, attended Belmont Technical College and was an employee of the BP Service Station at exit 208, Morristown.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, George Billman; paternal great grandmother, Jennie Hudson and maternal great grandfather, W. Clark Morgan.

She is survived by her parents, Gary and Janet Billman of Belmont; her fiancée, Joe Schmitt of Bethesda; maternal grandparents, Harold and Edna Campbell of Belmont and paternal grandmother, Betty Billman of Norton, OH; maternal great grandmother, Helen Morgan of St. Clairsville and uncles, Jim Campbell of Amanda, OH and David Billman of Akron.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville.  Private services will be held on Friday at the convenience of the family.  Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.

 

STEVE BOBOT

Steve Bobot, 88 of Holloway, Ohio died Monday, October 4, 2004 at his home.

He was born on Reese Hill in the Wheeling Valley near Maynard on July 10, 1916 a son of the late George and Julia Rozlozlsnik Bobot.

Steve was a retired employee of the Cravat Coal Company of Holloway and was an army veteran of World War II.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, George and John Bobot and sisters, Margaret, Julia and Mary.

Surviving are his wife, Erna Chilcher Bobot; 3 sons, Steve (Rev. Theresa) Bobot of Bellevue, Ohio; Raymond (Carolyn) Bobot of Belmont and Greg (Melody) Bobot of St. Clairsville; 3 daughters, Irene (Marty) Horvath; Helen Bobot and Linda Bobot and her fiancée Michael Neff all of Flushing; a brother Andy Bobot of Harrisville; a sister Irene Topazio of Cadiz; 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Family and friends will be received from 11 a.m. to time of service at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville with Rev. Theresa Bobot officiating.  Entombment will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove.

JAMES BONNETTE

James Edward Bonnette, 68 of McFadden St., St. Clairsville died Saturday, April 10, 2004 at the East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry.

He was born August 19, 1935 in Moundsville, a son of the late George N. Bonnette and Josephine Workman Bonnette.

He was a retired employee of the Belmont County Fairboard.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Bonnette.

Surviving are his wife, Josephine Swarnovich Bonnette; seven sons, Thomas and his wife Shirley of St. Clairsville, Ronald of Columbus, John “Rusty” of Clarington, Theodore “Ted” of Belmont, James “Tony” of Alliance, Robert “Mike” and his wife Shannon of Ashtabula, and David “Tim” of St. Clairsville; eight grandchildren, Chase, Anthony, Bryce, Misty, Amanda, Jennifer, Josie, and Rachel; great granddaughter, Sierra.

Friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Tuesday from 2 to 5 & 7 to 9 p.m. A private interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Belmont, Ohio.

 

NANCY ANN BOPP

Nancy Ann Bopp, 68 of Wheeling, formerly of Neffs died Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at Country Club Retirement Center in Bellaire. She was born April 29, 1935 in Neffs, a daughter of the late Knox Alexander and Matilda “Tillie” Butler Alexander.

Nancy was the former owner and operator of Bopp’s Florist of Wheeling and a member of the Fourth Street United Methodist Church in Wheeling.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Victor V. Bopp, Jr.; two sisters, Rose Lee Belser and Mary Lou Remnant.

Surviving are a son, Victor V. Bopp III and his wife Diann of Wheeling; two grandchildren, Garret & Jenna.

Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery in Wheeling with Rev. Kim Anderson officiating.

VELMA BOROSH

Velma Iona Borosh, 80 of St. Clairsville formerly of Lafferty died Sunday, March 7, 2004 at Forest Hill Nursing Home, St. Clairsville.

She was born at Pomeroy, Ohio on September 16, 1923 a daughter of the late Franklin and Lucy Margaret Scott Pickens.

Velma was a home maker and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Lafferty.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Borosh; a brother Franklin Pickens and a sister, Ruth Snyder.

Surviving are her daughter, Christine Huggins of St. Clairsville; sons Steve Borosh of Hammond, LA and Michael Borosh of Flushing; a sister Mary Richards of Parkersburg, WV; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Friends may call Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville with Vigil services at 3 p.m. Funeral Liturgy with Mass Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Lafferty.  Burial follows in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lafferty.

STARLING BOSTON 

Starling E. Boston, 77 of Armstrongs Mills, Ohio died Monday, June 7, 2004 at Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire.

He was born at Armstrongs Mills on May 10, 1927 a son of Lela VanDyne Boston and the late Paul Boston.

Starling was a retired employee of Conalco at Hannibal, Ohio, a member of the Armstrongs Mills United Methodist Church, the American Legion at Lowell, OH, the Eagles Aerie at Beverly, OH and was a Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his father Paul and a step granddaughter, Stacy Juzwiak.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth Stewart Holliday Boston; two sons, Junior (Dee) Boston of Dilles Bottom and Eddie (Zelda) Boston of Beallsville; one daughter, Monica (Rick) DaRe of Morristown; his mother Lela Boston of Armstrongs Mills; stepchildren, Ronald (Linda) Holliday of Proctor, WV; William (Melody) Holliday of Bellaire; Ray Holliday of Georgia; Connie (Greg) Gibbons of Fairview; Marilyn (Darrell) Ramsey of Jacobsburg; Tina (Jim) Steele of Fairview and Christine (Rodney) Schneider of Armstrongs Mills; a sister, Dorothy (Glenn) Goddard of Armstrongs Mills; brothers, his twin Earl (Gladys) Boston of Canton and Burl (Billie) Boston of Massillon; 5 grandchildren, 18 step grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and 7 step great grandchildren.

Members of the family will receive friends on Friday from 10 a.m. to time of memorial services at 11 a.m. at the Armstrongs Mills United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Phillips officiating.

BETTY BOWERY

 Betty E. Bowery, 80 of Warnock Road, St. Clairsville, Ohio died Saturday, September 11, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry.

She was born July 10, 1924 at Johnstown, Penna. a daughter of the late Harry and Bertha Fender Kull.

Betty was a loving homemaker and a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church at St. Clairsville.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Louis Janezic; 2 brothers, Harry Kull, Jr. and Donald Kull and a grandson, Keven Sullivan.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Bowery; 2 daughters, Saundra (Pat) Sullivan of St. Clairsville and Jeanette (Don) Campbell of Morgantown, W. Va.; 1 son, Lon (Penny) Janezic of St. Clairsville; 2 stepdaughters, Cindy Pearcy and Linda Frazier both of Shadyside; 1 sister, Carole (Dick) Meirhenry of Glendale, Ariz.; 1 brother, Terry (Darwin) Kull of Johnstown, Penna.; 7 grandchildren, Christy Tomolonis of Florida, Melissa Boyers of Sylvania, Ohio, Heather Callahan of Pittsburgh, Penna., Tia Lange of Florida, Regan Souders of Chicago, Ill., Dustin and Sean Janezic both to St. Clairsville; 7 great grandchildren.

Friends will be received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville where services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Rev. Ed Mooney officiating.  Burial follows in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.

MARY BRAGG

Mary Ethel Bragg, 83 of Park Health Center, St. Clairsville formerly of Holloway died Thursday, December 23, 2004 at Park Health Center.

She was born September 12, 1921 in Harrison County, a daughter of the late Earl Wayble and Bessie Brewer Wayble.

She was a retired cook from the former Wagon Wheel Restaurant in St. Clairsville and the B&O Restaurant in Holloway. A member of the Church of Christ in St. Clairsville and former member of the Holloway Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore "Teddy" Bragg; a brother, Raymond Wayble; a sister, Dorothy Burgess; granddaughter, Heather Morgan;  great granddaughter, Kelsey Vipperman and her special friend, Ernie Loy.

Surviving are three sons, James A. (Bonnie) Bragg of Martins Ferry, John T. (Alice) Bragg of Freeport, and Raymond A. (Dee) Bragg of Piedmont; two daughters, Marilyn (Joe) Pelkey of Bethlehem, West Virginia and Anita (Dwight) Fouts of New Philadelphia; many grand and great grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Monday from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 p.m. where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday with  Everett Hutson officiating. Burial follows in Rock Hill Cemetery, Flushing.

FLORA REGOLI BRATKA

Flora Regoli Bratka, age 93, of Englewood, Ohio, formerly of Glencoe, died Friday, November 19, 2004 at the Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio.  She was born September 27, 1911 at Glencoe, Ohio, daughter of the late Augusto and Julia Accica Regoli.

She was a homemaker and member of the Glencoe United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Max Bratka in 1974; a granddaughter, Karin Jane Bratka; two sisters, Florence Rocco and Fannie Naticchioni; and three brothers, Ferdinand, Filbert and Felice Regoli.

Surviving are her children, Virginia (George) Kosobucki of Decatur, Michigan, Donald Bratka of Englewood, Ohio, Marian Miller of Vandalia, Ohio, Irene (James) Hunter of South Port, North Carolina, Carl (Judy) Bratka of Greenville, Ohio, Edward (Kay) Bratka of Gahanna, Ohio, Kenneth (Joann) Bratka of Dublin, Ohio and Larry Bratka of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Flavia Bostancic and Flaminia “Lena” Thompson both of Neffs, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and a great great grandchild.

Family and friends will be received on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of services at 12 (Noon) at Toothman Funeral Home in Jacobsburg, with Pastor Mike Husted officiating.  Burial will follow at Jacobsburg Cemetery, Jacobsburg, Ohio.

 

ERNEST BRUNNER, III

Ernest H. “Butch” Brunner, III of Gibbon Drive, Shadyside died Sunday, August 15, 2004 at his home.

He was born at Wheeling on March 16, 1949 a son of Ernest and Hazel Agin Brunner.

Butch was a retired employee of the former North American Coal No. 1 mine at Powhatan Point and an avid Cleveland Indians fan.

Mabel (Cookie) Brunner, 77 of Brunner Road, Jacobsburg was called home by the Heavenly Father on Sunday, March 21, 2004

Cookie was born at Powhatan Point on March 12, 1927 a daughter of the late Lee (Bill) and Nancy Doty Baker.

She was a homemaker, a devoted mother of nine children and a member of the United Methodist Church at Jacobsburg.

Surviving are her husband, Floyd (Sam) Brunner; her children, Butch (Karen) Brunner; John Brunner; Gary (Beth) Brunner; Kathy (John) West; Melody (Jimmie) Ramsay and Christian (Renee) Brunner all of Jacobsburg; Randy (Mary) Brunner of Bannock; Teresa (Jim) Trigg of Armstrongs Mills and Crystal (Harry) Scott of Clarington.  Cookie has twenty three grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.  She is also survived by brothers and sisters, Halbert (Fuzz) Baker; Francis (Bo) Baker; Kennard Baker; Aaron (Tim) Baker; Floyd (Sam) Baker all of Powhatan; Della Hranko; Velma Gallaher; Harold (Bud) Baker all of Shadyside; Harry Baker of Bellaire; Gladys Harlan of Jacobsburg; Wanda Mihalek and Naomi Mihalek of Pennsylvania.

Leona E. “Granny” Carson, age 79, of Bellaire, died Monday, July 5, 2004 at Park Health Center, St. Clairsville.  She was born March 13, 1925 at Bellaire, daughter of the late Frank Myers and Gussie Lucas Myers.

In addition to her parents, Leona was preceded in death by two daughters, Kathy Sue Schramm and Patty Ann Moodispaw; three brothers, Paul, Clarence and Charles Myers; and three sisters, Audrey Hurst, Alice Jackson and Ethel Garrett.

Surviving are her husband, Tom E. “Zeke” Carson; a son, Tommy L. (Debbie) Carson of Bellaire; two daughters, Cindy (Mick) McGuire of Neffs and Gloria (Glen) McEndree of Bridgeport; two sisters, Pauline Hess of St. Joe and Martha Neff of Glencoe; 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Betty Ruth Christy, 78 of St. Clairsville died Thursday, October 7, 2004 at Forest Hill Nursing Home in St. Clairsville.

She was born September 4, 1926 in St. Clairsville, a daughter of the late Alley Ankrom and Eula VanHorne Ankrom.

Betty was a retired employee of the J.B. Martin Recreation Center in St. Clairsville and a Methodist.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Arthur Christy; a daughter, Rebecca Sue Moodispaw; a son, Mark Allen Christy; two sisters, Lela Messerly and Jean Schrum; two brothers, Robert and William Ankrom.

Surviving are two daughters, Terri Jaeger and Barbara Houston of St. Clairsville; a son, William Moodispaw of Weston, WV.; 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Mary Alice Clifford, 80 of Norris Street, St. Clairsville died Friday, April 9, 2004 at Forest Hill Nursing Home, St. Clairsville.

She was born at Black Betsy, WV on September 12, 1923 a daughter of the late John Kenneth Gibeaut and Mary Elizabeth Adamson Gibeaut.

Mary Alice was a homemaker and a member of Thoburn United Methodist Church at St. Clairsville.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Gibeaut.

Surviving are her husband James W. Clifford; her daughter, Sherry D. Bumgardner of St. Clairsville; 3 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Private services were held at the convenience of the family Monday, April 12, 2004 with Rev. Kim Anderson officiating. Burial followed in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.

JACQUELINE CHONOSKI

Jacqueline C. Chonoski, 80 of Apopka, Fla., formerly of Morristown, Ohio died Saturday, August 14, 2004 at her home.

She was born at Saginaw, Mich. July 21, 1924 a daughter of the late Norvin and Mary Fassezke Moulton.

Jacqueline was a retired social worker for the Belmont County Dept. of Jobs and Family Services.  She was a loved and loving mother and grandmother who  supported and encouraged her children and grandchildren to work hard and strive of their goals.  Jacqueline was a humble person to those who were less fortunate and a mentor to her friends and family.  Her kindness and wisdom has made an impact that is eternal.                                                              

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Joseph Chonoski, Jr.; a granddaughter, Lucretia McMaster and a sister, Lois Hostler.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Diane Hyust of Apopka, Fla., and Sue Ann Cobb of Cambridge, Ohio; one son, Robert Joseph Chonoski, III of Annapolis, Maryland; two sisters, Geraldine Viers of Hartland, Michigan and Beverly Langer of East Liverpool, Ohio; one brother, Norvin Moulton of Goodrich, Michigan; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Thomas Russell Coen, Sr., 75 of Noble Street, Bellaire died Monday, July 26, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital.

He was born at Bellaire on April 10, 1929 a son of the late Jesse and Regina McMahon Coen.

He was a retired employee of the former Shadyside Stamping Plant and a member of St. John’s Catholic Church at Bellaire.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Coen.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine Frances Garretson Coen; two sons, Jesse T. Coen and family and Thomas R. Coen, Jr. both of Bellaire; three daughters, Catherine L. Hungerman and family of Sarasota, FL; Susie Jo Coen and family of Bellaire and Sarah Loy and family of Bannock; a sister, Louise Wasko of Bellaire; 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Tyler David Cordery, infant son of David and Anna Brooks Cordery of Dover Church Road, Jacobsburg died Saturday, February 7, 2004 at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling.

He was preceded in death by paternal great grandparents, Walter and Wilma Hess Cordery and maternal great grandparents, Lawrence and Betty Brunner Brooks.

John Mack “Jack” County, Jr., 71 of St. Clairsville died Monday, May 17, 2004 at the Cleveland Clinic.

He was born November 15, 1932 in Buffalo, NY, a son of the late John M. County, Sr. and Eva Marie MacFarland County.

He was a retired employee of Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel’s Steubenville South 80 Inch Plant, and former superintendent of  St. Clairsville-Richland School’s bus garage.

John was a member of East Richland Evangelical Friends Church, current Master and immediate Past Master of Belmont Lodge No. 16 F & AM in St. Clairsville; a member of Steubenville Lodge N0. 45 F&AM; Scottish Rite Valley of Steubenville; Osiris Temple of the Shrine in Wheeling; Aladdin Temple of the Shrine in Steubenville; Bel-Mon Shrine Club; Royal Arch Masons Bellaire Chapter No. 107; Royal and Select Masons Bellaire Council No. 87; Hope Commandery No. 26 in Bridgeport; Honorary member of the Brilliant Volunteer Fire Dept.; past president of the St. Clairsville Council of Churches; New Covenant Academy school board member; member of the Experimental Aircraft Association; a member of the American Hungarian Cultural Club; MAPS; and the National Geographic Society.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his 1st wife Bonnie Jean Hague County; two sisters, Judy and Pat.

Theodore N. Cragulets, Sr., 81 formerly of New Athens died Thursday, October 21, 2004 at the Barnesville Health Care Center.

He was born August 10, 1923 in Lafferty. A son of the late Nick and Sarah Skerkosky Cragulets.

Ted was a retired coal miner from Consolidation Coal Co. at Georgetown and Cadiz and a member of Flushing Lodge No. 298 F&AM.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Bozich Cragulets; two sisters, Dorothy Mamula and Katheryn Bugay.

Surviving are a son, Theodore Cragulets, Jr. of Mentor, Ohio; a sister, Bertha Galaida of Parma, Ohio; two grandchildren, Sarah Gromek and Doug Cragulets; a great granddaughter, Kayla E. Gromek.

There will be no visitation. A private committal will be held at the convenience of the family.

John Rufus Cramer, 102 formerly of Woodrow Ave., St.Clairsville and Beallsville died Saturday, January 31, 2004 at the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born March 24, 1901 in Proctor, WV., a son of the late Roy Cramer and Florence Huggins Cramer.

He was a retired carpenter from the carpenter’s local No. 3, a former insurance agent for Motorist Mutual, and a former employee of Hanna Coal Co., a member of Thoburn Methodist Church in St.Clairsville, a former St.Clairsville Volunteer Fireman, and a member of Belmont Lodge No. 16 F&AM at St.Clairsville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Jefferson Cramer; a son, Paul J. Cramer; great grandson, Adam Eichhorn; three brothers, Glenn, Ralph, and Ward Cramer; three sisters, Roxie Ganoe, Marjorie Mills, and Martha Fontaine.

Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Beverly Cramer Pittman of Jerusalem; a grandson, John P. (Ruth) Cramer of Jerusalem; three granddaughters, Barbara (Dave) Eichhorn of Beallsville, Susan (Mike)Stewart of Jerusalem, Janet (Kelly Swallie) Cole of Alledonia; 9 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Charles Lee Cupryk, 83 formerly of Loomis Pines, Loomis, Ohio died Sunday, November 7, 2004 at Park Health Center in St.Clairsville.

He was born October 30, 1921 in Lamira, a son of the late John Cupryk and Marie Kuziw Cupryk.

He was a retired employee of the former Clifford Motor Company in St.Clairsville, Co-founder and Vice President of the Retarded Children School of Belmont County, (the predecessor to the School of Hope), a member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Barton, an Army veteran of WWII, and member of the Belmont American Legion Post No. 312.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Mae Fitch Cupryk; a son, Charles Cupryk; two sisters, Anna Zimomra and Mary Cupryk; three brothers, John, Jr., Michael and Steve Cupryk.

Surviving are a son, Steve John Cupryk and his wife Karen of St.Clairsville; two sisters, Helen Mularcik of St. Clairsville and Mildred Bilchak of Niles, Ohio; 2 grandsons, Chase and Dillon Cupryk; several nieces and nephews.

Betty Ilene Doerr, 79 of St. Clairsville, Ohio, formerly of Toledo and Sylvania, Ohio, died Friday, May 28, 2004 in Wheeling Medical Park Hospital, Wheeling, WV.

Betty was born July 28, 1924 in Toledo, Ohio a daughter of Gertrude (Worden) and Isaac Fahrer.

Betty worked for the Lion Store and the JC Penney Company.  She was a member of Christ the King Evangelical Lutheran Church at St. Clairsville.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Edward F. Doerr.

Surviving are her children, Cheryl George and her husband Roger of St. Clairsville and Craig Doerr and Kirsten of Toledo; her grandchildren, Matt Willard and Katie Doerr and great-grandchild, Garrett White.  She was also loved by her extended family which includes grandchildren, Brian and Sue George, Natalie Gaynor and Elizabeth (Libby) and Todd Krupinski and great grandchildren, Anthony Gaynor, Nicole Gaynor, Marisa Gaynor, Keith George and Cynthia George.

Friends will be received Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. with funeral services following the visitation at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville.  Pastor William Kurz will officiate.  Graveside services and burial will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Toledo Memorial Park in Sylvania, Ohio.

PAUL F. DUNBAR

Paul Francis Dunbar, 58 a 23 year resident of the Belmont Habilitation Center in St.Clairsville died Friday, August 27, 2004 in Wheeling Hospital.

He was born on March 23, 1946 a son of the late John Dunbar and Ruth Bright Dunbar.

Paul’s infectious spirit touched the lives of many and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Paul loved to bowl and he participated in Special Olympics. He won several medals because of his great love of the sport. He also worked at Belco Crafts,  his favorite job was sawing wood in the woodshop.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Allen Fritter.

Surviving are a niece, Donna Bond of Smyrna, Ohio; three nephews, Gregory and Bryan Fritter of Piedmont, Ohio, Jeffrey Fritter of Freeport, Ohio and several cousins.

Robert C. Dunfee, of Jacobsburg, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling.  He was the son of the late D. Ross Dunfee and Sara Belle Hammond Dunfee.

He was a teacher at Belmont Technical College in St. Clairsville and former teacher at Bellaire High School.  Bob was a member of Thoburn United Methodist Church in St. Clairsville;  a member of Weyer Lodge #541 F. & A.M. at Centerville; and he was a U. S. Army veteran.

In addition to his parents Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Edward Dunfee; and a sister, Dorothy Mae Dunfee.

Surviving is his wife, Nancy A. Seese Dunfee.

Marjorie Jane Ewan, 85 of Riggs Road, Bellaire died Friday, January 23, 2004 at Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire.

She was born at Pipe Creek July 8, 1918 a daughter of the late Dennie Leslie and Martha Ellen Bumgardner Porter.

Marjorie was a Homemaker and a Methodist by faith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Ewan; three brothers, Harry Porter, Dennie Porter and John Porter; two sisters, Cora Belle Hammond and Helen Steadman.

She is survived by a son, Kenneth L. Ewan and wife Adrienne of Bellaire; four daughters, Diana Knight and husband Jan of Powhatan Point, Jo Ellen Bumgardner and husband John of Warnock, Cindy Lou Schramm and husband Jim of Bellaire, Sally Hedger and Keith Christy of Shadyside; eighteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Marie Ferrell, 84 of Key-Bellaire Rd., Bellaire, Ohio died Friday, June 18, 2004 at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling.

She was born January 25, 1920 in Bridgeport, a daughter of the late William Ernest Winzenreid and Sophia Schemrich Winzenreid.

Dorothy was a former employee of Mehlman’s Cafeteria in St.Clairsville and the  Key Ridge School, a member of Belmont United Presbyterian Church on Key Ridge, a former 4-H advisor,  a member of the Belmont County Agricultural Society and the Farm Bureau.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Charles Winzenreid.

Surviving are a son, William Ferrell and his wife Barbara of Belmont; sister, Zelda Workman of Bellaire; brother, Earl Winzenreid of Bellaire; two grandchildren, Pam and Dale Ferrell.

Glenda Mayberry Ferrell, 59 of Country Club Road, St. Clairsville died Friday, October 8, 2004 at her home.

She was born at Beallsville, Ohio on November 17, 1944 a daughter of Frank and Betty Ward Mayberry.

Glenda was a retired school teacher for the Union Local School District having taught for 30 years.  She was a committeewoman for the Belmont County Republican Party and loved her hobbies and interests which were traveling, gardening, quilting and painting.  She was an accomplished artist and took a very special interest in educating children.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, Jimmy Ferrell and a stepsister, Linda Wallace.

She is survived by her husband, James “Jim” Ferrell; children, Nick (Tracy) Kowalski of Nashport, Ohio; Beth Kowalski (Steve Richards) of Circleville, Ohio; Rick (Faye) Ferrell; Stacey (Bryan) Conway and Michelle (Kevin) Hendershot all of St. Clairsville; her grandchildren Ashlen, Kade and Averie Kowalski; Wesley Stoner; Brock and Eberle Ferrell; Alyssa and Jimmy Lodi; Kyle and Mikayla Hendershot; brothers, Terry (Linda) Mayberry of Colerain, Ohio; Dennis Mayberry of Raleigh, North Carolina; Dale (Natalie) Mayberry of Ashville, North Carolina; Mark (Susan) Mayberry of Queenstown, Maryland;  sister Doty (Bill) Sturgill of Crooksville, Ohio; and special pets Tanner and Baby.

Virginia E. Fitch, 81, of Belmont, died Thursday, April 29, 2004 at Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire.  She was born on February 14, 1923 at New Castle, OH, daughter of the late David Granville Dunfee and Esther Melinda Secrest Dunfee.

She was a retired cook from Bell Nursing Home at Morristown and a member of the Centerville Christian Church where she had been a member of the Choir.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Cecil M. Fitch;  two sisters, Dorothy Beckett and Doris Bayardi;  and a brother, David Dunfee.

Surviving are a son, Eugene C. Fitch and his wife, Sandy Hall Fitch of Cameron, OH; a daughter, Betty A. Statler of Centerville; a sister, Janette “Marjorie” Weekley of Rocky Creek, OH;  three grandchildren, Dawna Fitch Grubb and her husband Darren, James D. Statler III and Melinda Ann Statler;  three great grandchildren, Darrien Grubb, James Andrew Statler and Elizabeth Rose Barath.

Family and friends will be received at Toothman Funeral Home in Jacobsburg, Friday, April 30th from 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday, May 1, 2004 from 12 Noon until time of services at 1 p.m. with Joe Lorimor officiating.  Burial will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove.

 

OLGA  THERESA  FIUTEM

Olga Theresa Fiutem, age 82, of St. Clairsville, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital.  She was born December 6, 1921 at Dunglen, Ohio, daughter of the late Vendel and Theresa Chardos.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church at St. Clairsville.

In addition to her parents, Olga was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Fiutem and a sister, Mary Vendlinski.

Surviving are her daughter, Susan Kyanko and her husband Reggie of St. Clairsville;  two grandchildren, Jennifer Kyanko of Radford University, Radford, VA and Jeremy Kyanko of Ohio University, Athens, OH;  a sister, Irene Pinter of Michigan;  and two brothers, Ernest Chardos of Arizona and Wendell Chardos of St. Clairsville.

Family and Friends will be received at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m..  Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 22, 2004 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Clairsville, with Fr. David Gaydosik as celebrant.  Burial will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove, OH.  A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

DUFF FOWLER

Charles “Duff” Fowler, 46 of South St.-Uniontown, St. Clairsville, Ohio went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, November 19, 2004.

He was born October 5, 1958 in Wheeling. A son of Grace Tunt Fowler Bauers and the late Carl Duff Fowler.

He was an employee of Wheeling Nisshin in Follansbee, WV., a graduate of Linsly Military Institute and West Liberty State College with a Bachelor Degree in Education and Safety. He served in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne in the Panama and Grenada conflicts, and he was an active member of Ohio Valley Christian Church in Fulton.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Paul L. Bauers.

Surviving are his wife, Vicky Archer Fowler; his mother, Grace Fowler Bauers of Martins Ferry; sisters, Sue Hamilton (Jim) of Martins Ferry, and Janice Lucki (Martin) of St. Clairsville; step-sons, Dominic J. Simone and Laney J. Simone; numerous nieces and nephews, including Andy Bartolovich, Marty Lucki III, and Matthew Lucki; step-sisters, Linda Wiater (John), Sunny Fitzsimmons (Robert), Sherry Defibaugh, Mindy Halloran (Brad).

WILLIAM  F.  FOX 

William F. Fox, age 79, of Glencoe-Whitney Rd., Belmont, died Sunday, January 25, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital.  He was born December 17, 1924 at Belmont, son of the late Alfred and Ada Talbott Fox.

He was a retired farmer and a retired custodian for the St. Clairsville-Richland City Schools.  He was member of the First Christian Church in St. Clairsville and a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Nancy Thomas;  two brothers,  Kenneth and John Fox and a sister, Virginia Pickett.

William is survived by his wife, Marjorie Kettlewell Fox;  two sons, Mike Fox and his wife Marcia and Jerry Fox and his wife Sonja all of Belmont;  three daughters,  Janet Thomas and her husband Jim and Franie Fox all of Belmont and Jean Cline and her husband Greg of Circleville, OH;  a sister, Dorothy Gooch of St. Clairsville; 11 grandchildren;  and 1 great granddaughter.

Family and friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Thursday at from 11 a.m. until time of services at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jerry Garloch officiating.  Burial will follow in Warnock Cemetery, Warnock, Ohio.

WILLIAM “JERRY” FOX

William G. “Jerry” Fox, 51, of Belmont, died Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at his home.  He was born on July 21, 1953 in Wheeling, West Virginia, son of Marjorie Kettlewell Fox and the late William F. Fox.

He was an employee of Sears, Roebuck and Company.  Jerry served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the East Richland Evangelical Friends Church.  

He was preceded in death by his father, William F. Fox.

Surviving in addition to his mother, Marjorie Fox of Belmont; are his wife, Sonja Sivert Fox; his mother-in-law, Myrtle Pettit of Cameron, West Virginia; two stepdaughters, Heather and Rachael; a brother, Mike (Marcia) Fox of Belmont; and three sisters, Janet (Jim) Thomas and Franie Fox all of Belmont and Jean (Greg) Cline of Circleville, Ohio.

Family and friends will be received on Friday from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville.  Visitation will also be held Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of services at 2 p.m. at the Wolf Run Baptist Church, Cameron, West Virginia with Pastor Ron McCoy officiating.  Burial will follow in the Wolf Run Baptist Church Cemetery, Cameron, WV.

Emil Gawel, 95 of South Marietta St., St. Clairsville, Ohio formerly of Allentown, PA died Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at Bishop Hodges Continuous Care Center in Wheeling, WV.

He was born February 5, 1909 in Poland, a son of the late Clemence and Victoria Gawel.

He was a retired barber and former employee of the city of Allentown Parks in Allentown, PA. a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Bridgeport, Ohio and a WWII Army veteran of the Polish Army.

Surviving are his wife  Pelagia Maystriw Gawel; a son Stefan Gawel of St. Clairsville; three grandchildren, Amy Wastler, Katie and Kelly Gawel; a great grandson Caleb Wastler.

Friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Bridgeport with Father Thomas C. Petronek the celebrant. Burial follows in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling.

There will be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

                                   

CARL GIVENS

Carl R. Givens, 70 of Key-Bellaire Rd., Bellaire died Tuesday October 19, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry.

He was born at Martins Ferry on January 3, 1934 a son of the late Ernest Givens and Alma Banfield Givens.

Carl was a retired employee of the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., Martins Ferry Plant, a Navy veteran and a Protestant by faith.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Everett Givens.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Howell Givens; his children, Michael (Maureen) Givens of Arizona; Brent Givens of Bellaire; Leigh Ann Lodi of Bellaire and Darin (Marcy) Givens of Hawaii; a sister Zella Mae Andrew of Michigan; grandchildren, Brandon Lodi and Teddie Givens; step grandchildren, Garrett and Jeanette.

Friends will be received on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville where services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.

 

FRANK  GOLETZ 

Frank Goletz, age 96, of Maynard, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling.  He was born August 12, 1907 at Crescent, Ohio,  son of the late Albert and Mary Klich Goletz.

He was a retired employee of Consolidation Coal Company, Georgetown # 10 mine,  a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Maynard and a member of the PNA Lodge # 455 at Maynard.    

In addition to his parents Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Cecelia Stachyra Goletz; two brothers, John Goletz and an infant brother, John; two sisters, Mary Libertosky and Agnes Garczyk.

Surviving are his two sons, Frank A. Goletz and his wife Marianne and Edward Goletz and his wife Barb all of Maynard;  a daughter, Jean Kanoski and her husband Dick of Columbus, OH; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

JOHN GRAHAM

John C. Graham, 74 of Graham Road, St. Clairsville died Sunday, February 8, 2003 at his home.

He was born at St. Clairsville on August 10, 1929 a son of Margaret Denham Graham and the later Elmer Graham.

John was retired Richland Township Road Foreman, a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church at St. Clairsville, the Stumptown Steam Threshers and the St. Clairsville Alumni Association.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Surviving in addition to his mother of St. Clairsville are his wife Doris M. Daniel Graham; sons and daughters Jay Graham of St. Clairsville; Ruth Ann Graham at home; Martha (Mike) Modra of Shadyside and Clark (Lynne) Graham of Valley Grove; his sister Martha Secrest of Ashville, OH; 5 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.

BARBARA GREENLEE

Barbara Jean “Bardy” Greenlee, 70, of Bellaire, formerly of Glencoe, went home to be with her Lord peacefully on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 9, 2004, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and loved ones.  She was born on May 12, 1933 at Flushing, Ohio daughter of the late Albert and Florence Lynn Fuller.

She was a homemaker and member of the Clarksburg United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Dana Crawford.

Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Forest D. Greenlee;  a daughter, Kelly Turkoly and her husband Frank of Glencoe;  four sons, Dr. Michael L. Fuller and his wife Terri of Millersport, OH, Dana Greenlee of Bellaire, Mark Greenlee and his wife Virginia of McConnellsville, OH and Scott Greenlee and his wife Marsha of Neffs; two brothers, Robert Fuller of Stewartsville and Albert Fuller, Jr. of Bellaire;  three sisters,  Mary Lou Serles of Powell, OH, Pat Bulger of Jacobsburg and Terri Lynn Fuller of Columbus, OH;  twenty grandchildren,  and ten great grandchildren.

MARY F. HALL

Mary F. Rankin Hall, 82, of Parma Heights, Ohio, formerly of Armstrongs Mills, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at the Seasons of Life Hospice, Parma Heights, Ohio. She was born September 24, 1921 in Armstrongs Mills, Ohio, daughter of the late Everett and Ethel Coffman Rankin.

She was a homemaker and a member of the State Road Church of the Nazarene at North Royalton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Fred Hall, Sr.;  a sister, Dorothy Boston;  and four brothers, Harold, Herman, Robert and James Rankin.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Lee of Parma Heights, Ohio and Sheri Wood of Oklahoma; three sons, William Fred Hall, Jr. of Oklahoma, John Robert Hall of Parma Heights, Ohio and James Alan Hall of Parma, Ohio; a sister, Betty Watkins of East Liverpool, Ohio; thirteen grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday at the State Road Church of the Nazarene at North Royalton, Ohio from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m.

ROBERT S. HARDESTY

Bob passed away peacefully on October 17, 2004 at Park Regency Care Center in Chandler, Arizona, following a brief battle with cancer.  Born September 11, 1925 in Wheeling, West Virginia, he was a 1943 graduate of St. Clairsville High School.  He attended Ohio State University and graduated from Elliott Business School in Wheeling.  Bob was a lifelong resident of St. Clairsville and retired from Consolidation Coal Company with 35 years of service.

Bob was a dog enthusiast and at various times raised and showed English Bulldogs, Australian Terriers and Pembroke Welsh Corgis.  A number of his dogs earned championship status and some of his Australian Terriers were shown at Westminster.  He had been a member of the Bulldog Club of America, an officer and Board Member of the Tri-County Kennel Club, a member and Director of the Australian Terrier Club of America and during the last 20 years an active member of the St. Clairsville Kennel Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Paul Hardesty and Ruth Smiley Hardesty and a brother, David Hardesty.  He is survived by brothers, John R. (Nancy) Hardesty of Gold Canyon, Arizona and C. Richard (Dorothy) Hardesty of Kent, Ohio and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cremation has taken place.  Calling hours will be at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 from 10:00 a.m. until time of memorial service at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Homer Harden officiating.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

 

IRENE HAUGHT

Irene Haught, 101 of Armstrongs Mills, Ohio died Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Washington County, Ohio on October 18, 1902 a daughter of the late William and Hattie McFarland Athey.

Irene was a homemaker and attended the Armstrongs Mills United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Haught; a daughter Betty; a brother, William Athey and a sister, Lois Dawson.

Surviving are her sons Lowell (Camilla) Haught of Proctor, W.Va. And Laverne (Phyllis) Haught of Alledonia; a brother Robert Athey of Proctor, W.Va.; 8 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, Jacobsburg with Rev. Michelle Lucarelli and Rev. Bob Phillips officiating.  Burial will follow in the Armstrong Cemetery.

ALFRED HENNEBERT Jr.

Alfred Hennebert Jr., age 79, of Lafferty, Ohio died Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital. 

He was born February 20, 1925 at Harpersville, Ohio, son of the late Carrie Repan Hennebert and Alfred Hennebert Sr.

Alfred was a retired employee from the Belmont County Engineer Department.  He enjoyed fishing and family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Anna Mae VanFossen, Nettie Kantsis and Helen Johnson; two brothers, Walter and Charles “Chuck” Hennebert..

Surviving are his wife, Shirley A. Thompson Hennebert; a son, Alfred A. Hennebert of Bethesda; two daughters, Donna Hennebert and Frank Wiles of Bethesda and Rose VanCuren of Lafferty; three sisters, Rose Marie Ramsay of Jacobsburg, Betty Pearl of Shadyside and Katie Gorshe of Barnesville; and 7 grandchildren.

EILEEN  HESS

E. Eileen Hess, age 75, of Jacobsburg, died Friday, June 4, 2004 at Shadyside Care Center, Shadyside.  She was born May 27, 1929 at Powhatan Point, Ohio, daughter of the late Emmett and Estella Junkins Palmer.

She was a retired nurses aide from Shadyside Care Center and a member of Jacobsburg United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, Eileen was preceded in death her husband, Vernard Lee Hess;  two sisters, Jean Hess and Velma Bischof;  and three brothers, Leslie, Harold and Kenneth Palmer.

Surviving are two daughters, Joyce Brocklehurst of Shadyside and Carolyn Cook of Bellaire;  two sons, Terry Hess of Powhatan Point and Charles Hess of Jacobsburg;  a sister, Inez Abrigg of Clarington; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

MICHAEL WILLIAM HESS

Michael William Hess, 29, of Sicklerville, New Jersey, formerly of Jacobsburg, died Sunday, April 18, 2004. He was born January 14, 1975 in Bellaire, Ohio, son of George William Hess and Charlotte M. Moran Hess.

He was an electrician working for Calvi Electric of Atlantic City, New Jersey and a member of the IBEW Local # 351.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Richard and Ruth Moran; and paternal grandparents, Jess W. “Goat” and Ann Hess.

Surviving are his parents, George W. “Bill” and Charlotte M. Moran Hess of Mays Landing, New Jersey; a son, Michael “Scooby doo” Hess and a daughter Maryn “Lu Lu” Hess; and a brother, Jason Hess of Mays Landing, New Jersey; mother of his children, Shawnnika Brown.

MICHAEL WILLIAM HESS

Michael William Hess, 29, of Sicklerville, New Jersey, formerly of Jacobsburg, Ohio died Sunday, April 18, 2004.

He was the son of George William Hess and Charlotte M. Moran Hess of Mays Landing, NJ; a brother of Jason Hess of Mays Landing, NJ; and father of Michael “Scooby Doo” Hess and Maryn “Lu Lu” Hess and their mother, Shawnnika Brown.

Bessie Marie Devaul Hickenbottom, age 96, of St. Clairsville, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Forest Hill Nursing Home, St. Clairsville.  She was born July 3, 1907 at St. Clairsville, Ohio, daughter of the late Simon and Altisha Ault Devaul.

Bessie was a former employee of Simpson’s Hatchery and Martini’s Restaurant both in St. Clairsville and she was a member of the First Christian Church at Flushing, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, William George Hickenbottom; a son, Alvin L. Hickenbottom; three brothers, Albert, John and Fred Devaul; and two sisters, Isabelle and Hazel.

Surviving are a son, Ernest E. Hickenbottom and his wife Sally of St. Clairsville; daughter-in-law, Betty Hickenbottom of Aurora, Colorado; four grandchildren, Debbie (Doug) Schroeder of Colorado, Barbara (David) Stewart of Singapore, Karen Hatley of Texas and Steve (Melinda) Hickenbottom of Hilliard, Ohio; and seven great grandchildren, Malisa (Kevin) Denke and Samantha Schroeder both of Colorado, Brittney Beckett, Brianna Beckett and Haley Hickenbottom all of Hilliard, Ohio, Jacob Stewart and Ethan Stewart both of Singapore and several nieces and nephews.

SUE ANN HOLLIDAY

Sue Ann Holliday, 64 of Shepard Hill Road, Jacobsburg died Friday, March 19, 2004 at Weirton Medical Center.

She was born at Fulton, WV on January 26, 1940 a daughter of the late Albert Edward and Rose Mildred Crozier Beltz.

Sue Ann was a retired care provider for Lawn View of Urbana, OH and Belmont Habilitation Center at St. Clairsville.  She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church at Bellaire and the Jacobsburg United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Beltz.

MARY  JANE  HRABAK

Mary Jane Hrabak, 98 formerly of Maynard and Barton died Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry. She was born June 5, 1905 in Czechoslovakia, the daughter of the late Josef and Marie Donda.

She was a homemaker and a Methodist.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hrabak and a son, Donald Hrabak.

Surviving are two daughters, Audrey Zavatsky and her husband Andrew of Barton, Geneva Higgenbotham and her husband Lewis of Sherrodsville, Ohio; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home in St.Clairsville on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Kim Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.

 

FRED B. HUDAK, Sr.

Fred Bernard (Hudock) Hudak, Sr., 89, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004 at his home. He was born Aug. 7, 1914 in Portage, Pa. A son of the late John Hudock and Julia Skalsky Hudock.

He was a retired coal miner from Lorain Coal and Dock in Blaine, a former custodian for St. Clairsville-Richland Schools and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Clairsville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Awilda Ott Hudak; daughter, Gertrude Kiss; infant son, Frank; brothers, John, Steve and Louis, sisters, Mildred Kolenich, Susan Phillips, Mary Hines and Julia Johnson.

Surviving are children, Fred Hudak, Jr. of Crystal River, Fla., John "Dan" (Virginia) Hudock of St. Clairsville, Stephen (Mary) Hudak of Toledo, Bernardine (Richard) Sykes of Morristown, Mary (Greg) Bowser of St. Clairsville, Michael (Jane) Hudak of Brunswick, Ohio, Anthony (Diane) Hudak of Lafferty, Elizabeth (Leonard) Snedeker of St. Clairsville, and Edward (Karen) Hudak of Bethesda; a son-in-law, Joseph Kiss, of Martins Ferry; 25 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary's Church in St. Clairsville with Father Thomas Chillog the celebrant. Burial follows in Belmont County Memorial Park in St. Clairsville.

A vigil service will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, in the funeral home.

 

CARL HUDSON

Carl Edward Hudson, 78, of Glencoe died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004 at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling.

He was born April 26, 1925 in Pultney Township, a son of the late Harry Hudson and Edna Pugh Hudson.

He was a retired coal miner from the Ohio Valley Coal Company at Alledonia, a member of the East Richland Evangelical Friends Church, a Navy veteran of World War II, member of Glencoe American Legion Post # 632, and St. Clair Lanes Senior Bowling League.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Nora Hudson; a sister, Evelyn LeMaster; a brother, Ernie Hudson.

Surviving are his wife Lillian "Lil" Saffell Stull Hudson; three sons, Harry Hudson of Neffs, Pat Hudson of Columbus, and Doug Hudson of Bellaire; two step daughters, Mary Gheen of Glencoe, and Helen Cole of Liberty Center, Ohio; six step sons, John and George McMahon of Glencoe, Douglas and Brian Stull of Sugar Grove, Ohio, Robert Stull of St. Clairsville, Dennis Stull of St. Joe; three brothers, Bill Hudson of Neffs, Mack Hudson of Beallsville, and Earl Hudson of Ky; two sisters, Sylvia Hawkins of Lakewood, Ca., and Mary Matthew of South Gate, Ca.; three grandchildren; eight step grandchildren, and seven step great grandchildren.

Florence Pearl Jackson, 99 formerly of South Sugar St., St. Clairsville died Thursday, July 15, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital’s Continuous Care Center. 

She was born March 25, 1905 at Finleyville, PA a daughter of the late William T. Gardner and Nannie Belle Trumbo Gardner.

Florence was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church at St. Clairsville.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph William Jackson; her daughter, Madelyn Pauline Jackson and sisters, Julia Jackson, Blanche Hawkins and Altha Lee.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on Monday from 11 a.m. to time of funeral services at 1 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville with Rev. Carl Denson officiating.  Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.

 

CAROL JOY JEFFERS

Carol Joy Jeffers, age 45, of Wheeling, West Virginia, died Thursday, November 25, 2004 at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling. 

She was born December 25, 1958 at Bellaire, Ohio, daughter of  Ronald E. Jeffers, Sr. and Beverly Pyle Jeffers.

Carol was a former switchboard operator at Ohio Valley Medical Center. She graduated from St. Clairsville High School in 1977 and also  graduated from Belmont Technical College with two Associate Degrees.

Surviving in addition to her parents, Beverly and Ronald Jeffers, Sr. of Warnock, Ohio is her only daughter, the apple of her eye, Janine Lorae Koonce and her husband Chris of Indiana; her grandfather, Paul Pyle, Sr. of Warnock; her longtime companion, Ignatius “E.J.” Markwas; three sisters, Terri L. Davis and her husband John of Martins Ferry, Paula V. Lucey and her husband Mark of Reading, Pennsylvania and Leslie J. Marlin and her husband Keith of Middletown, Delaware; a brother, Ronald E. Jeffers, Jr. and his wife Stephanie of Dayton, Ohio; 10 nieces and nephews.

ROBERT JENDRUSIK, SR.

Robert Louis Jendrusik, Sr., 72 of Graham Road, St. Clairsville went to be with the Lord after a long battle with emphysema on Monday, June 14, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry.

He was born at Crabapple on April 23, 1932 a son of the late Frank and Mary Dudek Jendrusik.

He was a retired employee of the R & F Coal Company, a member of the Fairpoint Mennonite Church, an avid gardener and was a great lover of sports and polka music.  He was also a U.S. Army veteran.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Walter Jendrusik and an infant sister.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Jackson Jendrusik; daughters, Debbie (Joe) Lyden of Lafferty and Tammy (Ray) Regel of Midway; a son, Robert (Linda) Jendrusik, Jr. of Fairpoint; sisters, Dolly and Helen Jendrusik both of St. Clairsville; brothers Joe, Ronnie, Richard and Frank Jendrusik all of St. Clairsville; grandchildren Lori Hoffman, Michael Lyden, Kristen Lyden, Christopher and Ryan Regel and great granddaughter Brianna Marie Hoffman.

JOSEPH JINGLE, SR.

Joseph J. Jingle, Sr., 83 of  St. Clairsville, Ohio died Thursday, September 2, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital.

He was born February 20, 1921 in Maynard, Ohio a son of the late John and Sophia Snyder Dziegiel.

Joe was a an employee of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel for 19 years and was retired  from Ormet in Hannibal, Ohio and was a past president of the Ormet Retirees Club He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council #4243 both at St. Clairsville and the Polish National Alliance.  Joe served his country during World War II as a platoon Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific theatre.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters, Rose Novy, Mary Johnson and Wanda Manolis and a brother, Walter Jingle.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Helen A. Cizeski Jingle; five children, Barbara Steele and her husband Richard of St. Clairsville; Joseph Jingle, Jr. of Medina, Ohio; David Jingle and his wife Joyce of Bellaire, Ohio; Richard Jingle and his wife Lyn of Seven Lakes, North Carolina and Rosemarie Jingle of Columbus, Ohio; 12 grandchildren, Jeff Jingle, Jenny Jingle, Julia Jingle, Brian Steele, Matt Steele, Stephanie Jingle, Christopher Jingle, Andy Jingle, Casie Jingle, Evan Jingle, Courtney Jingle and Eric Jingle; 1 great grandchild, Aidan Jingle; 2 nieces, 3 nephews and his brother-in-law, John Cizeski.

ETHEL JOHNSON

Mary Ethel Johnson, 97 of Little McMahon Creek Rd., St. Clairsville died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at Park Health Center in St. Clairsville.

She was born May 12, 1907 in St. Clairsville. A daughter of the late George Washington Ault and Lora Sutton Ault.

Ethel was a homemaker, a Presbyterian by faith and a member of the Church of God in Bridgeport.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter William Johnson; sons, Lewis and Glen Johnson; daughters, Betty Porter and Louise Mihalic; brothers, James Elmer Ault and Glenn S. Ault; sisters, Edna Conley and Marie Burghy.

Surviving are a daughter, Virginia Sayre of St. Clairsville; a son, Robert Johnson and his wife Melody of St. Clairsville; 12 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 18 great great grandchildren.

GLENN JOHNSON

Glenn L. Johnson, 73 of Maple Avenue, St. Clairsville died Saturday, April 17, 2004 at Park Health Center, St. Clairsville.

He was born at St. Clairsville on August 3, 1930 a son of Ethel Ault Johnson and the late Walter William Johnson.

Glenn retired after 30 years of service at St. Clair Lumber.  He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of American Legion Post 159 at St. Clairsville and served on the Bike Patrol for the St. Clairsville Bicycle Trail.  He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman and a protestant by faith.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Johnson and sisters, Betty Porter and Louise Mihalic.

Surviving are his wife, Ann L. Stewart Johnson; his children, Debbie (Dave) Hillman of Martins Ferry; Jeff (Michelle) Johnson and Kim (Jim) Fiutem all of St. Clairsville; his mother, Ethel Johnson of St. Clairsville; a brother Robert Johnson of St. Clairsville; a sister, Virginia Sayre of St. Clairsville; grandchildren Jimmy, Amy, Joey, Josh, Rosie, Jake, Brandon and Shaylah and 6 great grandchildren.

RUTH  V.  JOHNSON

Ruth Victoria Johnson, age 77, of Bethesda, died Friday, February 27, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, Ohio.  She was born April 19, 1926 at Jacobsburg, Ohio, daughter of the late George Washington “Leroy” Underwood and Mary Evelyn Johnson Underwood.

She was a retired employee from Riesbeck’s Food Market at St. Clairsville and a Methodist by faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,  William Lewis Johnson;  four brothers, Arthur, Harold, Louis and Ralph Underwood; and six sisters, twins Beatrice and Bernice Underwood, Edna Hines, Grace Saffell, Mary Homan and Alice Bumgardner.

Surviving are two sons,  Edward Lewis Johnson of St. Clairsville, Ohio and Dennis Allan Johnson of Statesville, North Carolina;  two brothers, Floyd Underwood of Bellaire and Robert Underwood of Delaware; a sister, Alberta Shaw;  ten grandchildren;  and two great grandchildren.

PAUL KEENER

Paul S. Keener, 35 of Denham Road, St. Clairsville died Saturday, January 24, 2004 at his home.  He was born at Glen Dale, WV September 6, 1968 a son of Allan Keener and Judith A. Carrol Keener.

Paul was a supervisor / installer for Pro-Aire of St. Clairsville.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John Withers.

He is survived by his children, Paul Spencer Keener, II; Sarah Ann Keener and Emily Tay Keener all of Moorefield, WV; his mother, Judith A. Keener of St. Clairsville; a brother, Michael Withers of Lafferty; sisters Linda Withers Schrimp of Benwood and Mary Keener Sellers of Barnesville and grandmother, Mary Carrol of Martins Ferry.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 9 a.m. to time of memorial services at 10:30 a.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville, with Bob Rodzaj officiating.

Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Holly Memorial Gardens.

 

RICHARD KIDD

Richard C. “Dick” Kidd, 86 died Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at Crestview Health Care Center, St. Clairsville, Ohio.  He lived many years in the Flushing - Holloway, Ohio area.  He was born October 14, 1917 at Elm Grove, West Virginia, the son of the late Richard and Linnie Minder Kidd.

A 1936 graduate of Cadiz High School, he retired from Consolidation Coal Company after 33 years of service at the Georgetown Preparation Plant in Cadiz.  He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was a member of Legion Post 366 at Flushing and the D.A.V. Post 117 of Bellaire, Ohio.  He attended the Flushing United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Jeanette Kidd, Mildred Warwick, Lenore Lindsay, Margaret Arbenz and Avis Pope and brothers James Kidd and Robert Kidd.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Klayko Kidd of Zanesville whom he married in May 1943; his son, Cale (Marcy) Kidd of Zanesville; his daughter, Linda (Bill) Cesa of Westlake, Ohio; his son, Rich (Cathy) Kidd of St. Clairsville, Ohio; two grandsons; Rick Kidd of Charleston, South Carolina and Mark (Tricia) Kidd of Zanesville; two granddaughters, Erin Kidd and Chris Kidd both of St. Clairsville; great grandchildren, Karley Jane and Kyle Patrick Kidd of Zanesville and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Friday, September 24, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with American Legion services at 7:30 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville where services will be conducted by his nephew, Jake Kidd on Saturday, September 25 at 1:00 p.m.  Interment will follow at the Holly Memorial Gardens in Pleasant Grove with military honors by the Belmont County Council of the American Legion.

 

DELBERT KIDDER

Delbert Kidder, age 79 of West Pipe Creek Road, Jacobsburg, Ohio died Saturday, October 16, 2004 at Country Club Retirement Center, Bellaire, Ohio.

He was born December 23, 1924 at Bellaire, a son of the late Walter and Lula Mae Bell Kidder.

Delbert was a retired employee of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation, Steubenville Plant and a U. S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters Irene Rankin and Dorothy Eden.

Delbert is survived by his two brothers, Charles and Don Kidder both of West Pipe Creek, Jacobsburg; three sisters, Mae McMasters of Shadyside, Ann Knowlton of Bellaire and Thelma Kemp of Bethesda; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, Jacobsburg, where services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m., with Rev. Donald Cordery officiating.  Burial follows in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Key Ridge, Bellaire.

RALPH D. KINZY

Ralph D. Kinzy, age 88, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, died Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, Ohio.  He was born August 7, 1916 at Martins Ferry, Ohio, son of the late Forrest and Ada Dennis Kinzy.

He was a retired paint contractor and a member of Thoburn United Methodist Church at St. Clairsville.

In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Bumgarner Kinzy; and a brother, Herbert Kinzy.

Surviving are two sons, Larry Kinzy of St. Clairsville and Donald Kinzy of Batesville, Arkansas; two brothers, Lowell Kinzy of Bridgeport, Ohio and Harold Kinzy of Berea, Ohio; three sisters, Valta Giffin of St. Clairsville, Annie Couch of Sandusky, Ohio and Mary Kaptein of Dublin, Ohio; four grandchildren, Scott and Brad Kinzy, Jennifer Saulpaugh and Alan Kinzy; four great grandchildren, Brooke and Joshua Saulpaugh, Kate and Alan Kinzy.

KRISTINA KLEE

Kristina Marie Klee, daughter of Karl Jeffrey and Penny Hodgson Klee of Bellaire died Sunday, June 13, 2004 at home. She was born July 16, 1993 at Bellaire Hospital.

She was a 4th grade student at Bellaire Elementary School.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a sister, Nikkii Klee of the home; paternal grandparents, Karl A. and Marge Klee of Arizona, Sid and Vera Jean Myers Brown of Glencoe; maternal grandparents, Bill and Rose Hodgson of Pennsylvania, Linda and Bob Harris of Bellaire; aunts and uncles, Scott, Robin, Jim, Tina, Tim, Toot, Roger, Winnie, Heidi, and Wendy; numerous great aunts and uncles.

WILLIAM  P.  KLOS

William P. “Bill” Klos, age 43, of St. Clairsville, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, WV.  He was born January 14, 1961 at Wheeling, son of Anna Mae Barber Klos and the late Edward Michael Klos.

He worked as a metal fabricator from the Sheet Metal Workers International Association Local # 33.  Bill was a graduate of Belmont Technical College with an Associates Degree in Mining Technology; a member of the Mining Electrical Maintenance Association; a member of the Ruffed Grouse Society and avid fisherman and outdoorsman and an EMT.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Michael Klos.

Surviving are his mother, Anna Mae Klos of St. Clairsville;  a sister, Jean Snyder and her husband Marty of Cadiz, Ohio; five brothers, E. Michael Klos, Jr. and his wife Rebecca, Steven J. Klos and his wife Lori and Peter Klos all of St. Clairsville, Donald J. Klos and his wife Cheryl of Texas and David B. Klos and his wife Teresa of North Dakota; five nieces and seven nephews; and faithful loving dog, Eddy.

DOROTHY KNIGHT

Dorothy A. Knight, 84 of Newell Avenue, St. Clairsville formerly of Uniontown died Saturday, July 31, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry.

She was born at Wheeling on July 2, 1920 a daughter of the late John P. and Stella Mary Rozgiewizc Broski.

Dorothy was a retired employee of Belmont Hills Country Club and was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church at Flushing.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Wallace Knight and a brother, Melvin Lee Broski.

Surviving are her sons, Robert A. (Marjorie) Knight of Saginaw, MI and John W. (Helen) Knight of Seattle, WA; two brothers, George P. (Emma) Broski of McMechen and Norman J. (Ruth) Broski of Warwood; three grandchildren, Mareen, Marla and Tonya Ann; four great grandchildren and very dear friends, John and Rita Dutton and children of Flushing.

Abigail Marie Kowalczyk, infant daughter of James J. Kowalczyk and Teresa A. (Busack) Starr of 72978 Morgan Hill Rd., St. Clairsville died Monday, December 6, 2004 in the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

She was born on November 30, 2004 in Martins Ferry.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Benjamin Kowalczyk and her maternal great grandmother, Violet Gdula.

Surviving in addition to her parents, are paternal grandmother, Rose Kowalczyk of Maynard; maternal grandparents, Patricia Gdula Busack and Peter Busack of Adena; maternal great grand parents, Mario and Sylvia Busack of Bellaire; three brothers, Michael J. Kowalczyk of Pittsburgh, James M. Kowalczyk of Wheeling, and John Starr, Jr. of Dillonvale.

HELEN KUPCZAK

Helen Kupczak, age 95, of Maynard Rd., St. Clairsville, died Friday, February 20, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry.  She was born November 29, 1908 at Lafferty, Ohio, daughter of the late John and Mary Zaleski Kowalewski.

She was a retired employee of Bermuda Knitware in New York City and a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Maynard.    

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Kupczak; six brothers, Stanley, Henry, Frank, Tony, Joseph and Kizer Kowalewski; four sisters, Agnes Jacovetty, Josephine Kowalewski, Anna Wright and Stella DeMonte.

Surviving are three sisters, Florence Delbridge and Geneva “Jean” Kowalewski both of St. Clairsville and Marie Hitchcock of Wheeling; a brother, William Kowalewski of Cleveland, OH; a special niece, Jean Strawn of St. Clairsville; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

JOHN KUPROWICZ

John Kuprowicz, age 81, of St. Clairsville died Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at his home.  He was born in Tiltonsville, Ohio on June 30, 1922 son of the late Joseph and Frances Javorski Kuprowicz.

John was a retired employee of the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation Yorkville Plant; a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Clairsville; a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, he participated in the Normandy Invasion and was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart; and he was a member of the Polish National Alliance.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Bartsch.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Pazzoni Kuprowicz; a daughter; Rebecca J. Kuprowicz and her husband Mark G. Bloom of Cleveland Heights, OH; a son, John Allen Kuprowicz and his wife Janet of Dillonvale, OH; a granddaughter, Kristi J. Kuprowicz of Massillon, OH; four brothers, Joseph Kuprowicz and Stanley Cooper both of Martins Ferry, OH, William Kuprowicz of St. Clairsville and James Cooper of Idaho.

Family and Friends will be received on Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville where Vigil services will be held at 3 p.m.  Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Clairsville with Father Thomas Graven as celebrant. GEORGE KUZMA

George W. Kuzma, 84 of Warnock, Ohio died Thursday, June 24, 2004 at his farm.

He was born at Warnock on April 8, 1920 at son of the late Pete and Mary Fedorka Kuzma.

George was a retired coal miner having worked for 47 years at Oglebay-Norton’s Captina Mine and Y & O Coal’s Allison mine and was a life long farmer.  He was 1st Division Commander for the 11th District of the American Legion, and was a  lifetime member of American Legion Post 632 at Glencoe, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5356 at St. Clairsville and the DAV at Bellaire.  George served his country during World War II from 1941 to 1945 as a combat infantryman with Company B, 186th Infantry in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during the battle for New Guinea.   His decorations and citations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Rifle Marksman Badge, Good Conduct Ribbon, American Defense Service Medal and Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon.  George was very active in helping to provide military services for his fallen comrades and will be greatly missed by his fellow Legionnaires

In addition to his parents he was preceded by his brother, Pete Kuzma.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Julia S. Kleevic Kuzma; his sons, George (Laura) Kuzma of Tucson, AZ; Mark (Claire) Kuzma of Cincinnati; Bruce (Janine) Kuzma of Akron and John (Kathy) Kuzma of Washington, PA; sisters Anna Popovich and Mary Janosik both of Lamira and grandchildren, Anthony and Angela; Adam and Courtney; Lucas and Logan; Tara and Johnny.

Friends will be received on Sunday 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville where services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Msgr. Mark Froehlich officiating.  Burial will follow at the Warnock Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Belmont County Council of American Legions.

Leslie Lee Lawrence, age 83, of Lamira Road, Belmont, Ohio, died Friday, October 1, 2004 at Park Health Center, St. Clairsville. 

He was born April 4, 1921 at Maysville, Kentucky, a son of the late James and Lillian Lawrence.

Lee was a retired pilot of the Moundsville Ferry.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer, Clarence and Obie Lawrence; a sister, Gladys Turner and a grandson, Jonathon.

Surviving are his wife, Essie Baker Lawrence; children, Nancy Biebighauser of Bonita Springs, Florida, Louise McClelland of Cincinnati, Ohio, Ruth Smith of Washington Courthouse, Ohio, Judy Turvey of Bethesda, Carol Dudash of Bethesda, Maggie James of Belmont, Tom (Debbie) Lawrence of Jacobsburg, Brenda (Bill) Kirkland of Belmont, Jane (Roger) McKeen of St. Clairsville, John (Debbie) Lawrence of St. Clairsville and Melissa Kelly of Bethesda; 22 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

DOROTHY  E.  RELINE  LEHMAN

Dorothy Elizabeth Reline Lehman, age 87, of Bannock,  went home to be with her Lord, Thursday, January 22, 2004.  She was born on December 20, 1916 at St. Clairsville, daughter of the late Harry Reline, Sr. and Bernice Reber Reline Hoagland.

She was a homemaker, an Avon representative for 25 years, and she dedicated 70 years of service to the Bannock United Methodist Church as pianist and organist from age 12 to 82.  Many of those years, Dorothy taught generations of children at Sunday school and Bible School and she served as choir director.  Her devotion to the community was also seen through her work with the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Bannock Elementary School and her generosity to the needy.  Dorothy was a member of Thoburn United Methodist Church at St. Clairsville, the Bridgeport Chapter # 452 Order of Eastern Star,  the United Methodist Women, and former Precinct Committee Woman for the Belmont County Democratic Party. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her  husband, J. Carl “Tut” Lehman, Sr.;  a son-in-law, Charles Farmer;  a sister, Virginia Lawson;  three brothers,  Harry E. “Buck” Reline, Jr., George Reline and Donald Reline.

Dorothy is survived by five daughters: Barbara (John) Hackett and Johnetta (Bill) Collins both of New Albany, OH; Anita (Ron) Kelly of Orange, CA; Carlye Farmer of Zanesville, OH and Dottie (Ed) Low of Reynoldsburg, OH;  a son, J. Carl Lehman, Jr. with whom she resided;  a sister, Margaret Stanley of St. Clairsville; 10 grandchildren;  and 17 great grandchildren.

Family and friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m.  Visitation will also be held on Monday at Thoburn United Methodist Church, St. Clairsville from 11 a.m. until time of services 1 p.m. with Rev. Kim Anderson and Pastor Mike Husted officiating.  Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Morristown, Ohio.

ROGER  H.  LEIFFER

Roger H. Leiffer, age 51, of St. Clairsville died Friday, January 30, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital.  He was born on October 16, 1952 at Martins Ferry, son of Vonda Howell Leiffer Swisher and the late John H. Leiffer.

He was a contractor.

Roger was preceded in death by his father, John Leiffer.

Surviving in addition to his mother, Vonda Swisher of St. Clairsville are his companion, Kathy Clark;  a son, Jeremy Leiffer of Flushing; a daughter, Carey Moore and her husband Rob of Belmont;  two granddaughters,  Cailey Moore and Briana Leiffer;  four sisters, Pat Corder of St. Clairsville,  Jackie Moore and Cheryl Leiffer both of Bellaire and Donna Johnson of Bethesda;  and four brothers, Mike Leiffer of Bellaire, OH, Terry Swisher of Heath, OH, Gary Swisher of Reynoldsburg, OH and Ken Swisher of Flushing, OH.

At Roger’s request there will be no visitation or services.  Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville is in charge of arrangements.

 

FRANK P. LODI, Sr.

Frank P. Lodi, Sr., age 76, of St. Clairsville, died Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at Park Health Center, St. Clairsville.  He was born on June 16, 1927 at Barton, Ohio, son of the late John Lodi, Sr. and Anna Daniels Lodi.

He was a retired employee from Consolidation Coal Company and a member of Thoburn United Methodist Church at St. Clairsville.  Frank was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II;  a member of the VFW Post #8848 at Colerain;  a member of the American Legion Post #159 at St. Clairsville;  a member of the St. Clairsville Eagles Aerie #2541;  a member of the Lansing Sportsman’s Club;  the Polish Club at Wolfhurst;  and a member of the Italian American Club at Bellaire.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Ivern Gallaher Lodi;  three brothers,  John, Jr.,  Walter and Arthur Lodi;  and a sister,  Helen Talza.

Surviving are two sons,  Frank P. Lodi, Jr. of Columbus, OH and Mike Lodi of St. Clairsville;  three grandchildren,  Brandon, Alyssa and Jimmy Lodi;  two sisters,  Dorothy Van Niel of Amherst, OH and Rose Ann Bossell of Avon Lake, OH.

Ann L. Luginskie, age 75, Formerly of Maynard, died Saturday, January 24, 2004 at Crestview Health Care Center, St. Clairsville. She was born August 1, 1928 at Maynard, Ohio,  daughter of the late Walter and Sophie Vicker Oboy.

She was a retired employee of General Electric at Cleveland, Ohio and a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Maynard.    

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest J. Luginskie;  a son, Michael J. Luginskie;  and a sister, Mary Yudasz.

Surviving are her daughter, Carolyn Woodland and her husband Bruce of Bethesda;  a daughter-in-law, Grace Haapapuro Luginskie of Colerain, Ohio;  four sisters, Stella Zavacky of Midway,  Olga Lukacsko of Fairpoint,  Irene Balog of Canton, OH and Geneva Piwkowski of Cleveland, OH;  four brothers,  Eddie Oboy of Bellaire,  Tony Oboy, John Oboy and Joe Oboy all of Maynard;  four grandchildren,  Michael Luginskie, Jr.,  Kristen Woodland,  Miranda Haapapuro and Jennifer Woodland Gahagan;  and a great grandson, Tyler Gahagan.

JOSHUA JAMES MANSFIELD

Joshua James Mansfield, infant son of Christopher Mansfield and Jamie Eckles, died Friday, November 26, 2004 at the East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, Ohio. 

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Mansfield.

Surviving are his parents, Christopher and Jamie; his sisters, Morgan and Miranda Eckles; maternal grandparents, Sharon and James Neal of St. Clairsville; paternal grandfather, Robert Mansfield of Bethesda; great grandparents, Evelyn Carter of St. Clairsville and Loraine Neal of Cadiz; aunts and uncles, Jennifer Neal of Wheeling, Robert Mansfield Jr. of Bethesda, Bruce Mansfield of Maynard, Missy Hughes of St. Clairsville and Tanya Cox of Bridgeport.

Private services for the family were held today at 2 p.m. at Holly Memorial Gardens in Pleasant Grove, Ohio, with Rev. Jerry Wenger officiating.  Arrangements by Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville.

 

MILDRED MASON

Mildred C. Mason, 83 of Lake Worth, FL formerly of So. Marietta Street, St. Clairsville died Sunday, February 22, 2004 in Atlantis, FL.

She was born at Maynard on July 16, 1920 a daughter of the late Forest L. Carpenter and Rosa Gallagher Carpenter.

Mildred was a member of First Presbyterian Church at St. Clairsville, a member and past worthy matron of the former St. Clairsville Chapter #510 Order of Eastern Star and current member of Bridgeport Chapter #452, a member of the Daughters of the Nile at Wheeling and a friend of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church at Lake Worth, FL.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Francis Mason on March 15, 1986; her son James Henry Mason on March 3, 2000 and her sister Norma Swallie in March of 1996.

Surviving is her daughter-in-law, J. Diane Moore Mason of Lake Worth, FL, with whom she resided.

Friends will be received on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville where services will be held on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Laurie Armstrong officiating.  Burial will follow in Crestview Cemetery, Barnesville.

PAUL  R.  MARX

Paul R. Marx, age 75,  a resident of St. Clairsville for 14 years and former resident of Colerain Pike, Martins Ferry, died Saturday, January 31, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry.  He was born May 3, 1928 at Martins Ferry, son of the late Christy and Ethel McGlumphy Marx.

He was a retired self-employed mine equipment salesman.  Paul was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II; a member of Ohio City Lodge # 486 F. & A.M. at Martins Ferry; the American Legion Post # 159 at St. Clairsville; and a life member of the VFW Post 5356 at St. Clairsville. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Paul is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Monteleone Marx;  and several cousins.

Freda V. Yoss Mayne, 87 a resident of Ann’s Country Retreat in Wellsburg, WV.,  formerly of St.Clairsville died Sunday, February 8, 2004 at her home. She was born, April 6, 1916 in Limestone, WV a daughter of the late Edward Yoss and Marie Coffield Yoss.

A former member of the East Richland Evangelical Friends Church and the Pioneer City Auxiliary VFW Post 3613 in Martins Ferry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy S. Mayne; daughter, Ruth Ann Scott Ellenberg; son, Roy Mayne; brothers, James Yoss, & Elmer Yoss; sisters, Hazel Kubina, Anna Mae Long, Doris Roller, Alta Armstrong, granddaughter,Virginia Mayne Davis Griffin.

Surviving are four sisters, Estella Jasinski of St. Cloud, FL., Bernice Hoobler of Malvern, Ohio, Wilda Becknell of Carrollton, Ohio., and Mary Dale Kephart of Pine Top, AZ.;
two brothers, Harold Yoss of Aleppo, PA., and Donald Yoss of Powhatan Point, Ohio.; 8 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.

ALMA MAZZIE

Alma Mazzie, 77 of Sandy Ridge Rd., Barnesville, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 2, 2004.

She was born January 10, 1927 in Glencoe, Ohio. A daughter of the late Vincent Barr and Filomena Archangeli Barr.

A former employee of Walton Home in Barnesville and member of the Cornerstone Assembly of God in Barnesville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Mazzie.

Surviving are two daughters, Diana Harrison and her husband David and Marsha Campbell of Barnesville. A son Joseph Michael Mazzie of Barnesville; a brother, Dante Barr of Glencoe; two grandchildren, Heather Lengyel and Anthony Campbell.

Helen Mazzie, 77 of Bellaire, Ohio, formerly of Glencoe, Ohio, died Saturday, September 25, 2004 at Forest Hill Nursing Home in St. Clairsville.

She was born at Glencoe, Ohio on March 18, 1927 a daughter of the late Andy and Mary Sepac Mazzie.

Helen was a member of the Church of the Nazarene at Shadyside, Ohio.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Popish, Virginia, Annie and Rose Mazzie; and two brothers, Andy and Joe Mazzie.

Surviving are a niece, Linda Holub of Glencoe; two nephews, Rick Popish of Morgantown, West Virginia and Joe Mazzie of Barnesville, Ohio; 2 great nieces; 2 great nephews; and several great great nephews.

Abigail Nicole (Brunner) McAfee, infant daughter of Magen Nicole Brunner and David McAfee, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by maternal great grandfather, Louis Underwood, Sr. 

Surviving in addition to her parents, are paternal grandparents, Frank and Debbie McAfee;  maternal grandparents, Mark and Noreen Brunner;  great grandparents, Martha Underwood, Ernest Brunner I, Hazel Howell, Thomas and Henrietta McAfee and Joseph and Helen Shook;  uncles, Mark Brunner II, Daniel McAfee; aunts, Donna and Franki Lynn McAfee; loved by aunts, uncles and cousins.

MAMIE L. McGARY

Mamie Leona McGary, age 89, of Lafferty, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, WV.  She was born April 9, 1915 at Lonaconing, Maryland, daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah McIntire Pritts.

Mamie was a member of the Flushing Alliance Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew J. McGary; and two sisters, Helen Jozwiak and Beulah Anthony.

THOMAS V. McGOUGH, SR.

Thomas V. McGough, Sr., 87 of East Main St., St. Clairsville died Tuesday, March 9, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital.

He was born July 22, 1916 in Belmont, a son of the late Harry D. McGough and Helen Mayhew McGough.

He was a retired employee of the Ohio Department of Transportation, a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Clairsville, an Army veteran of WWII and a lifetime member of St. Clairsville VFW Post 5356 and Bridgeport American Legion Post 227.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William H. McGough; and a sister, Dorothy Blackford.

Surviving are his wife, Winifred O’Malley McGough; three sons, Thomas Virgil McGough, Jr. of Bethesda, Michael McGough and his wife Marianne of St. Clairsville, and John Patrick McGough and his wife Barbara of Bellaire; a sister, Jane Wagar of Pleasant Hills, Ohio.; 2 grandchildren, Michael McGough of Chicago and Elizabeth Bortner of Virginia Beach, VA.; great grandson, Andrew Bryan Pent.

There will be no visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial mass at St. Mary’s Church in St. Clairsville on Friday, March  12, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. with Monsignor George Coyne the celebrant.

A private entombment service will be held at the convenience of the family in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.

Belmont County Council of American Legions will conduct services at 12:50 p.m. Friday at the church.

Eleanor Gillespie McGrew, 97 formerly of Sunset Drive, St. Clairsville died Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at the Hodges Continuous Care Center, Wheeling.

She was born at Shepherdstown, Ohio on July 5, 1907 a daughter of the late William C. and Elizabeth Williams Gillespie.

Eleanor was a homemaker and a member of Thoburn United Methodist Church at St. Clairsville.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William McGrew in 1966.

She is survived by many friends including Jim and Frankie Carnes and family of St. Clairsville.

Friends will be receive from 11 a.m. to time of services at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville with Pastor Edward D. Eberhart officiating.  Burial will follow in the Unity Cemetery, New Athens.  

 

ANDY McGUIRE

Charles Andrew “Andy” McGuire, III, 15 of O.K. Road, Belmont died Saturday, August 21, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital.

He was born at Bellaire on March 19, 1989 a son of Charles McGuire, Jr. and Deborah Battistelli McGuire.

Andy was a member of the sophomore class at St. Clairsville High School and was and avid hunter and fisherman.He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Freda Underwood and an uncle, Mike McGuire.

Surviving are his father and stepmother, Charles and Shirley Nelson McGuire, Jr. of Belmont; his mother, Deborah Battistelli McGuire of Bellaire; two sisters, Angela McGuire of Bellaire and Amanda McGuire of Belmont; a brother, Aaron Ball of Bellaire; grandparents, Mick and Cindy McGuire of Neffs; Margaret Henry of Bellaire and Fred Battistelli of Bellaire; a nephew, Terrance Jarrells and several aunts and uncles.

Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville where services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Ray Benesh officiating.  Burial will follow in Warnock Cemetery.

 

BETTY JEAN McMILLEN

Betty Jean McMillen, 85, of Iona Drive, St. Clairsville formerly of Zanesville died Monday, November 29, 2004 at the Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling.

She was born November 21, 1919 in Zanesville, a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Bainter Wheeler.

Betty was a former employee of Azallion's clothing store in St. Clairsville and Stone & Thomas at the Ohio Valley Mall. She was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church in St. Clairsville and the Bridgeport Chapter No. 452 Order of the Eastern Star.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred B. McMillen in 1987; a brother, Robert Wheeler and a sister, Mary Virginia Agin.

Surviving are three daughters, Melenie Dinan (Terry) of Cincinnati, Barbara Jean Barbe (Bill) of St. Clairsville, and Judith Maxson of Cincinnati; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Friends will be received on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville where services will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Laurie Armstrong officiating, followed by an interment service at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Zanesville Memorial Gardens.

Eastern Star services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

MARY MESKE 

Mary I. Meske, 88 of Hutchinson Drive, St. Clairsville died Monday, May 31, 2004 at Forest Hill Nursing Home, St. Clairsville.

Mary was born at Key, Ohio May 21, 1916 a daughter of the late Chalmer Raymond Luyster and Etta May Stonebraker Luyster.

She was a retired office clerk for the CAC of Belmont County and a former secretary in the Agriculture office at the Belmont County Court House.  Mary was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Hilltoppers Senior Citizens both at St. Clairsville and the AARP.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Loren Earl Luyster.

She is survived by her husband, Charles R. Meske; a daughter, LuAnn Kennedy of Wheeling; a son, Richard Meske of Columbus and a sister, Eleanor Kozsuch of Texas.

Friends will be received on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, St. Clairsville with Rev. RAYMOND  MICK

Raymond Thomas Mick, 67 of Grove City, Ohio died Friday, February 6, 2004 at the Montenary Care Center in Grove City. He was born December 12, 1936 in Midway, Ohio. A son of Anna Margaret Troyanovich Mick and the late Steve Mick.

He was a retired employee of Ameritech, a Russian Orthodox,  an Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of American Legion Post 164, and Elks Lodge No. 37 of Grove City.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Mick.

Surviving in addition to his mother of St. Clairsville, Ohio are an uncle, Andy Troyanovich of New Athens, Ohio; three aunts, Barb Mudrak and Irene Troyanovich of Flushing, Ohio, Becky Tokar of Garfield Heights, Ohio; sister-in-law, Wanda Mick of Louisville, Ky.; a niece, Julie and nephew, Steve; a great niece, several cousins and dear friends, Jean Cotton and Tom Ryle of Grove City.

Private services were held Monday at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville with Father Michael Kabel officiating. Burial followed in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.

MILLARD M. “JACK” MILLER, Sr.

Millard M. “Jack” Miller, Sr., 81, of Bellaire, died Thursday, May 13, 2004 at his home.  He was born on October 1, 1922 at Bellaire, Ohio.  

Jack is survived by his wife, Wanda Miller;  son, Monte Miller and his wife Ruth Ann of Bellaire;  daughter, Patricia A. Long and her husband, Tom of Michigan;  a sister, Katherine;  and two granddaughters, Jacqueline and Juliann.

JESSE D. MILNER

Jesse Dale Milner, 90 of St. Clairsville died Friday, October 1, 2004 at Crestview Health Care Center in St. Clairsville.

He was born February 6, 1914 in Morristown, Ohio. A son of the late Fred S. Milner and Blanche Wilcox Milner.

Jesse was a self employed farm equipment salesman and an auctioneer, a WWII Army Air Force veteran, a charter member of the Belmont County Saddle Club, member of the Ohio Horse Council, Buggy Wheel Riding Club, Morristown Historical Society and the First Families of Belmont County.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph and sister, Mary.

Surviving are his wife Mary Simerall Milner; three daughters, Suzanne Simerall Moskala and her husband Richard L. of New York, Debra Stringer and her husband Mark B. of Bellaire, Mary Lou Parrish and her husband Jeff of Belmont; a sister, Helen Milner of Morristown.

There will be no visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the Union Cemetery in Morristown with Rev. William Boyer officiating. Military services will be conducted by the Belmont County Council of American Legions.

Grace Lodama Moore, 87 of Bethesda, Ohio formerly of Key died Monday, March 15, 2004 at Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire.

She was born near Hunter, Ohio on July 5, 1916 a daughter of the late Tilden and Bernice Perkins White.

Grace was a homemaker and a member of the Hunter Christian Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Moore in 1966; her son, Richard Moore; a brother, Arthur White and sisters Velma Beard and Gail Jenewein.

Surviving several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

SSgt. Richard Lynn Morgan, Jr.

Staff Sergeant Richard Lynn Morgan, Jr., age 38, of Maynard, Ohio died Tuesday, October 5, 2004 in Iraq while serving his country in Operation Iraqi Freedom.  

He was born on December 20, 1965 in Dayton, Ohio, son of Donna Green Arnold and the late Richard Lynn Morgan, Sr.

He was an active duty Staff Sergeant with the U. S. Army Reserve’s 660th Transportation Company, Cadiz, Ohio.  He also served in Operation Just Cause in Panama in 1989-1990.  Rik was a 1984 graduate of St. Clairsville High School where he was an original member of the St. C. Singers and was a member of the St. C. Red Devil football team. He was an employee of Conway Central Express at Uhrichsville, Ohio.  He won an award, the Schutzenschnier, in Germany for pistol marksmanship.  He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 8848 at Colerain and the American Legion Post # 666 at Maynard and a member of the PNA  # 455 at Maynard.

For his courageous efforts Rik’s family will be presented his Purple Heart and the Bronze Star by the United States Army.

In addition to his father, Rik was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elmer and Louise Morgan and Alvin and Mary Green; and a nephew, Zachary.

Surviving are his wife Diana U. Scharfenberg Morgan;  his mother and dad, Donna and Harry Arnold of St. Clairsville; a son, Richard Lynn Morgan, III; a daughter, Kimberly May Morgan; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Tatjana Maria Kubicki Scharfenberg and Peter Scharfenberg; two brothers, Robert C. (Taylor) Morgan of Kansas City, Missouri and Hank (Amanda) Arnold of Flushing; two sisters, Anita Gillespie of New Philadelphia and Bonita (Shawn) Girty of Bethesda; a brother-in-law, Frank Michael Scharfenberg; several nieces and nephews and a special aunt, Linda Fortuna.

SUSAN  MORGAN

Susan Morgan, age 57, of St. Clairsville, Ohio died Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at Wheeling Hospital,  Wheeling, West Virginia. She was born November 30, 1946 at Wheeling, daughter of Mary Elinor Ault Waser and the late Edwin Waser.

She was a nurse and an office manager for Dr. Michael Steinberg in St. Clairsville and she attended East Richland Evangelical Friends Church.

Susan was preceded in death by her father, Edwin Waser.

Surviving are her mother, Mary Elinor Waser of St. Clairsville;  her husband, Ronald J. Morgan;  a son, Ronald J. Morgan, Jr. and his wife, Carol of St. Clairsville;  a daughter, Jody L. Whitnable and her husband, Eric of Gahanna, Ohio;  two brothers, Ed Waser of Dublin, Ohio and Roger Waser of Hudson, Ohio;  and four grandchildren, Andrew Joseph Morgan,  Lauren Mackenzie Morgan,  Jared Daniel Morgan and River Howard Whitnable.

 Pearl Naomi Mort, 93 of Uniontown, Ohio, died Friday, September 3, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry.

She was born at Lafferty, Ohio on March 21, 1911 a daughter of the late Roy Bennington and Flora Baker Bennington.

Pearl was a former employee of Star Nursing Home in Morristown, a homemaker and a member of the Harbor of Hope Assembly of God at St. Clairsville, Ohio.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Earl Mort; a daughter, Dixie Simmons; and a son, Douglas E. “Jim” Mort, Jr; two grandsons, Brad Huntsman and Randy Ornouski; two sisters, Belinda Derby and Virginia Finchum; five brothers, Alvin, Vernon, Willard, Walter and Richard Bennington; and four great grandchildren.

She is survived by four daughters, Gloria McCreary of Mineral City, Ohio, Donna Rae Huntsman of Lloydsville, Ohio, Patricia A. Cook of Uniontown, Ohio and Judy Nation of Flushing, Ohio; three sons, Roger L. Mort of Bridgeport, Ohio, Patrick D. Mort of Bethesda, Ohio and John P. Mort of Uniontown, Ohio; 27 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren and 20 great great grandchildren.

Alice Hilda Murphy, 83 of Mingo Junction, Ohio and Barton, Ohio died Friday, June 25, 2004 at her home.

She was born on June 28, 1920 at Wheeling, WV a daughter of the late William and Mary Martin McCamick.

Alice was a homemaker and a protestant by faith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Virginia May Murphy; 2 infant grandchildren; an infant great grandchild and several brothers and sisters.

She is survived by two daughters, Fannie Jone (William) Davenport of Barton and Jane Elizabeth Benitez of Mingo Junction; one son Glen John (Charlene) Murphy of Reelsville, IN; one sister, Twila McCamick of Triadelphia; two brothers, Dewey McCamick and Carl McCamick both of Bridgeport; six grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

William E. Myers, Sr., 72 of Old Moss Run Rd., Bellaire died Sunday, May 2, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital.

He was born at Moss Run, Bellaire June 23, 1931 a son of the late Isaac and Anna Spodzial Myers.

Bill was a retired employee of North American Coal No. 6 mine and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers Raymond and David Myers and a sister, Helen McMahon.

Surviving are his wife, Wilma McMahon Myers; his children, William E. (Vickie) Myers, Jr. of Jacobsburg; Roger W. (Renee) Myers of Bellaire; Debra A. (Jeff) Rankin of Jacobsburg and John A. (Connie) Myers of Bannock; brothers Ronald J. Myers, Thomas L. Myers and Donald J. Myers all of Bellaire and sisters Carolyn Hupp of Martins Ferry and Doris J. Rumora of Bellaire; 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Joseph Darren “Duke” Neff, 37 of Bellaire died Friday, May 21, 2004 in Wheeling.

He was born at Bellaire August 8, 1966 a son of Martha Myers Neff and the late Richard T. Neff.

Duke was a self employed carpenter and Presbyterian by faith.

He was preceded in death by his father Dick Neff and a sister, Donna Neff.

Surviving are his wife, Traci Preston Neff; daughters, Lynsey and Audra and son Darren; his mother Martha Neff of Glencoe; sisters, Shirley White and Karen Neff both of Glencoe and Jackie Wright of Bellaire; brothers, Rick Neff of Neffs; Ed and Jim Neff both of Bellaire.

MARTHA E. NEFF

Martha Evelyn Neff, age 72, of Glencoe, Ohio died Monday, November 22, 2004 at her home.  She was born October 30, 1932 at Bellaire, Ohio, daughter of the late Frank and Gussie Lucas Myers.

She was a retired employee of the Marx Toy Factory at Glen Dale, West Virginia. Martha was a member of the Belmont United Presbyterian Church at Key Ridge, Bellaire;  the American Legion Auxiliary Post # 52; a life member and past president of the VFW Auxiliary Post # 626 both at Bellaire and a past chair of the district for the MOCA.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard T. “Dick” Neff; a daughter, Donna Neff; a son, Joseph “Duke” Neff; three brothers, Paul, Clarence and Charles Myers; and four sisters, Audrey Hurst, Alice Jackson, Ethel Garrett and Leona Carson.

Surviving are three sons, Rick Neff of Neffs, Ed Neff and Jim Neff both of Bellaire; three daughters, Shirley White and Karen Neff both of Glencoe and Jackie Wright of Neffs; a sister, Pauline Hess of St. Joe and brother-in-law, Tom “Zeke” Carson; 21 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.

RICHARD NEWELL, Sr.

Richard Newell, Sr., age 63, died Thursday, March 4, 2004 at Aultman Hospital, Canton.  He was born Sept. 15, 1940 at Bellaire, son of the late William and Gale Schramm Newell.

He was a retired employee from North American Coal Company # 3 mine and a U. S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Meholovitch Newell;  and a brother, Bill Newell.

Surviving are two sons,  Richard Newell, Jr. of Cardington, Ohio and James A. Newell of Atlanta, Georgia;  a daughter, Penny Jo Newell of Moundsville, WV;  four brothers, Donald of Jacobsburg, Charles of Florida, Dwayne of Bridgeport and Burt of Bellaire; two sisters, Gale Worley of Jacobsburg and Debbie Swift of Arizona;  and six grandchildren.

HALLEY  NEWLAND

Halley Newland, age 86, of Martins Ferry, died Monday, July 19, 2004 at Bishop Joseph Hodges Continuous Care Center in Wheeling.  He was born November 13, 1917 at Martins Ferry, son of the late John K. Newland and Mary Esque Newland Upperman.

He was retired owner and operator of Halley Newland and Sons General Contractors.  Halley was a Presbyterian by faith; a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II serving on the U. S. S. Romulus in the Pacific Theatre; a member of the American Legion Post #  38, at Martins Ferry; VFW Post 5356 at St. Clairsville; the Martins Ferry Elks Lodge # 895; and the Martins Ferry Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife, Janet Hammel Newland; two sons, Dan Newland and his wife Wendy of Pleasant Grove, Ohio and John Newland of the home; a daughter, Laura Newland of White Oak, Pennsylvania; and a granddaughter; Leah Newland.

Richard L. “Dickie” Norris, 68 of Newark, Ohio formerly of Glencoe died Friday at Licking Memorial Hospital, Newark.

He was born at Glencoe on March 21, 1936 a son of the late Dolly Anna Norris.

Dickie was a paper carrier for the Times-Leader and Wheeling Intelligencer and News Register for 40 years, a former member of the Saints Club at St.Clairsville, the Glencoe Volunteer Fire Dept. and was a Methodist by faith.

In addition to his mother he was preceded in death by 6 aunts and 6 uncles.

Survivors include his aunt, Catherine “Tots” Procaccini of Bellaire.

Friends will be received on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to time of services at 1 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville.  Burial will follow in the Glencoe Cemetery.

JOSEPH “JOSE” ORNOUSKI

Joseph “Jose” Ornouski, age 63, of Fairpoint, died Monday, April 5, 2004 at his home.  He was born July 15, 1940 at Fairpoint, son of the late Bolick and Leona Mellot Ornouski.

He was a former employee from Fairpoint Coal Co.;  a Catholic by faith and a member of the Fairpoint Polish Club.

Surviving are four brothers, John of Pine Grove, CA, Bernard of New Athens, OH, Bolic of Cadiz and Walter of Bradenton, FL;  four sisters, Freda Dawson of Fort Worth, TX, Helen Farley of Royal, WA, Martha Wootchie of Adena and Florence Ornouski. 

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday at 12 Noon in the Longview Cemetery at New Athens, Ohio with Father Thomas Graven officiating.  Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Virginia Paden, 82, of St. Clairsville, died Friday, May 7, 2004 at her home.  She was born on May 11, 1921 at Chester , West Virginia , daughter of the late Virgil and Amanda M. Nutter Logston.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Ryder.

Surviving are her husband, Orion C. Paden;  a daughter, Luana M. Fader and her husband James of St. Clairsville;  three grandchildren, Debbie Hayba of Dayton, Ohio, Roger Fader of Triadelphia, West Virginia and Michael Fader of St. Clairsville;  four great grandchildren, Tyler James Fader, Emily Julia Fader, Ivy Elizabeth Fader and Sage Abigail Fader;  two sisters, Mildred Leslie of Crescent, Ohio and Mary Chaponis of Miami, Florida;  two brothers, Glen Logston of Springfield, Missouri and Roy Logston of Huntsville, Alabama.

DALE W. “FOXY” PALMER

Dale W. “Foxy” Palmer, Sr., 72 of Gamble-Hughes Rd., Jacobsburg died Wednesday November 24, 2004 at the Belmont Community Hospital in Bellaire.

He was born February 29, 1932 in Powhatan Point, a son of the late Leroy “Carb” Palmer and Mildred Virginia Freeholder Palmer.

Foxy was a retired steelworker from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel at Martins Ferry and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Rose Marie Myers and Darla Palmer; two sisters, Martha Brumback and Irene Palmer; four brothers, Dennis, Virgil, Avery Raymond and Terrence Leroy Palmer.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Brown Palmer; three sons, Dave Palmer of Elyria, Ohio, Dale Palmer of Jacobsburg, and Denny Palmer of Belmont; one brother, James Palmer of Pipe Creek; one sister, Virginia Stokes of Pipe Creek; 6 grandchildren  and 1 great grandchild.

CHARLES H. PELKEY

Charles H. Pelkey, age 80, formerly of Belmont, Ohio, died Sunday, December 26, 2004 at Park Health Center, St. Clairsville, Ohio.

He was born on March 18, 1924 at Wheeling, West Virginia, son of the late Charles (Ross) Pelkey and Mary E. Behrens Pelkey Forshey.

Charles was a retired employee from Ohio Valley Coal Company No. 6 mine at Alledonia; he was a retired driver from St. Clair Taxi; Charles was a former milk truck driver from Krob Dairy; he also was a retired farmer.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Ollie Forshey; his first wife, Mary Chuslo Pelkey; a son, Dennis J. Pelkey; a sister, Margaret Johnson; and a brother, Robert E. Pelkey.

Surviving are his second wife, Nancy J. Pelkey; two sons, Charles W. Pelkey of Cleveland and Wallace (Jeannie) Pelkey of Belmont; two daughters, Mary (Roger) Thrash and Tammy (Rodger) Fisher all of Flushing; two stepsons, Clarence (Tina) Morgan of Bridgeport and Henry Morgan III of St. Clairsville; three sisters, Katherine (George) Brown of Jacobsburg, Helen Hitchings of Belmont and Betty Forshey Graham of Florida; and seven grandchildren.

DR. MARIO L. PELLIZZARI

Dr. Mario Luigi Pellizzari, MD, 80, of Crescent Rd., St. Clairsville died Sunday, June 27, 2004 in Peterson Hospital, Wheeling.

He was born March 15, 1924 in Timmins, Ontario, Canada. A son of the late Antonio Pellizzari and Regina Gazzola Pellizzari.

Dr. Pellizzari was a retired physician from his family practice in Wheeling, a Catholic,  a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and past member of the Ohio County Medical Society, and American Medical Association.

Surviving are his wife, Janet Smith Pellizzari; a son Richard Pellizzari of Clio, Michigan; a daughter, Catherine Caucci of West Palm Beach, Florida; sister Adelia Kos of Timmins, Ontario, Canada; two Grandsons, Richard Antonio Pellizzari II, and Michael Anthony Pellizzari;

There will be no visitation or service.

NAOMI “MONA” PERKINS

Naomi “Mona” Perkins, age 78, of Alledonia, Ohio, died Friday, November 12, 2004 at Monroe County Care Center, Woodsfield, Ohio.  She was born in Moorehead, Kentucky, on May 26, 1926 daughter of the late Boyd and Sadie Ginter.

She was a retired waitress and former employee at the sewing factories in Barnesville and Woodsfield.  Mona was a member of the Armstrongs Mills United Methodist Church and a Treasurer of the Pythian Sisters Lodge at Beallsville, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Ginter; a sister, Vera Hertrich and two infant sisters.

Surviving are her husband, Oscar R. Perkins; a daughter, Carol Baker and her husband Ernie of Alledonia; two grandchildren, Dawnell Moore and her husband Trevor of Alledonia and Troy Baker and his wife Gina of Beallsville; seven great grandchildren, Cody, Shane, Caitlyn and Wyatt Moore and Justine, Matrasa and Owen Baker; a brother, Floyd Ginter of Upper Sandusky, Ohio; four sisters, Virginia Howard of Mansfield, Ohio, Elizabeth Hensley and Dorothy Aspauch both of Bucyrus, Ohio and Alice Hussey of Salina, Ohio.

BYRON E. PICKERING

Byron Elijah Pickering, age 80, of Pickering Road,  St. Clairsville, died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at his home.  He was born on June 8, 1923 at St. Clairsville, son of the late Clyde W. Pickering and Olive Blanche Moore Pickering.

Byron was a retired school bus driver for St. Clairsville-Richland City School District where he worked for 32 years and he was a retired farmer.  He was a member of East Richland Evangelical Friends Church, St. Clairsville; and a U. S. Army veteran serving as a Staff Sergeant in the Pacific Theater during World War II. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Lois Lee Shambaugh Pickering; three sons, Jay Lee Pickering and Richard Lewis Pickering both of St. Clairsville and Charles Byron Pickering and his wife Julie of Delaware, OH;  two daughters: Janet Lynne Webster of St. Clairsville and Joan Louise Lepic and her husband Ron  of Barton; four grandsons;  two granddaughters;  one great grandson;  two sisters, Helen Boyd of La Mirada, CA and Harriett Webster of St. Clairsville; several nieces and nephews.

CYNTHIA PORCO

Cynthia Rose Porco, age 53, a resident of the Belmont Habilitation Center in St. Clairsville died Friday, December 17, 2004 at her home.

She was born April 30, 1951 in Martins Ferry. A daughter of Richard Porco and Mildred Dobzynski Porco of St. Clairsville.

Cynthia was an employee of Belco Crafts and a Catholic.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two brothers, Monty C. Porco of Louisville, Kentucky, and Marlin “Rick” Porco of Tiltonsville; a sister, Bonita Joyce Marsh of Bellaire; nieces and nephews, Michael and Marie DeVault, Richard, David, Nicole, and Michael Porco; and her extended family of the residents and staff at  Belmont Habilitation Center, who she dearly loved as brothers and sisters.

BADEN R. POWELL

Baden Robert Powell, age 75, of St. Clairsville died Monday, December 20, 2004 at Crestview Health Care Center in St. Clairsville.

He was born December 2, 1929 at Wheeling, West Virginia, son of the late Baden and Florence Tanley Powell.

Baden was a retired owner and operator of Powell Construction Company.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War; a charter member of the St. Clairsville Jaycees and a member of the Saints Club.  He was instrumental in the building of the St. Clairsville Field House and the St. C. Jaycee Shelter.

Baden was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lee Rice Powell;  son, Robert Powell and his wife Rose of St. Clairsville; three daughters, Cheri Jones and her husband Bill of Westerville, Ohio, Janice Cochran and her husband Barry of Creston, Ohio and Linda Timko and her husband John of St. Clairsville; eight grandchildren, Emily and Baden Powell, Bradley and Bethany Jones, Michelle and Shaye Cochran, Evan and Eric Timko; a cousin, Richard Powell and his wife Joan of Steubenville, Ohio and three cousins in England.

Franklin Gray “Frank” Reed, 58 of Maple Ave., St. Clairsville died Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at Park Health Center in St. Clairsville.

He was born July 20, 1946 in Bellaire. A son of the late John Franklin Reed and Geneva Gray Chipps Reed.

He was a retired truck driver, a Marine Corp veteran of the Vietnam Era, a member of the Saints Club, American Legion Post 159, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2541  all of St. Clairsville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold "Gene" Reed and George C. Reed.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Adams Reed; a daughter, Rebecca Reed of St. Clairsville; a grandson, Franklin Joseph Reed; sister, Treva Spehar of St. Clairsville; and brother, Ronald C. Reed of Martins Ferry.

Pauline C. Reline, age 82, of St. Clairsville, died Friday, August 6, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, Ohio.  She was born January 7, 1922 at Stewartsville, Ohio, daughter of the late Pete L. and Sofia Sadowski.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at St. Clairsville. Pauline was a member of the former St. Clairsville Chapter # 510 Order of Eastern Star and the Presbyterian Women.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. “Buck” Reline, Jr.; a son, Robert Reline; two sisters, Mary Zack and Ann Riddle; and five brothers, Pete J. Sadowski, Joe, Steve, Andy and John Obraski.

Surviving are her daughter, Paula Zavacky and her husband Paul of Midway; and a granddaughter, Paulette Ference and her husband Kevin.

Doris Jeannie Ringer, age 69, of Morristown, Ohio died Thursday, July 1, 2004 at Barnesville Health Care Center.  She was born on October 8, 1934 at Martins Ferry, Ohio daughter of the late Charles E. Ringer and Evalyn L. Harrold Ringer.

She was a retired employee from C & P Telephone and W. A. Wilson and Sons.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Patrick A. Ringer.

Surviving are two brothers, David Ringer of Martins Ferry and Michael Ringer of Myrtle Beach, SC and several nieces and nephews.

Annie Darrah Rosen, age 88, formerly of Powhatan Point, Ohio, died Saturday, August 28, 2004 at the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Woodsfield, Ohio.  She was born May 14, 1916 at Crescent, Ohio, daughter of the late Pomeroy and Addelia Bruce Nelson.

She was a former employee at the Company Store for North American Coal Company # 1 Mine at Powhatan Point and a member of the Amity United Methodist Church at Steinersville, Ohio.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Darrah; four sisters, Mabel Jennewein, Lula Keene, Mildred Townson, and Ellen Vostatek; and three brothers, Willard Nelson, Clyde Nelson and Albert Nelson.

Surviving are her daughter, Priscilla Jeffers and her husband Joe of Jacobsburg; a son, Austin Darrah of Powhatan Point; a sister, Edna Ramsey of Powhatan Point; and two grandchildren, Carri Darrah and Casey Darrah.

Margaret A. Roth, age 83, of St. Clairsville, died Friday, May 28, 2004 at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling.  She was born on August 12, 1920 at Maynard, Ohio, daughter of the late David and Beatrice Smith Applegarth.

She was a retired dispatcher for the St. Clairsville Police Department and a member of Thoburn United Methodist Church at St. Clairsville.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Roth, Jr.; a daughter, Michal Roth; a grandson, Sean Michael Byrne; and two brothers, Harold and Donald Applegarth.

Surviving are two sons, David Roth and his wife Betty and Michael W. RICHARD E. “DICK” SADLOWSKI

Richard E. “Dick” Sadlowski, 65, of St. Clairsville, died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at his home.  He was born on October 12, 1938 in Bellaire, son of the late Margaret Kovaly Sadlowski and Edward Sadlowski.

He retired from the U. S. Army as Sergeant First Class with 20 years of service having served during Vietnam.  While serving his country he received the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart.  Dick was owner and operator of A. & J. Janitorial.  He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 5356 and the American Legion Post # 159 both at St. Clairsville and the National Vietnam Veterans Association. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Rose Sadlowski; five uncles, Andy, Steve, John “Ted”, Mike and Joe Kovaly; and aunt, Ann Brown.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Anna Maria Sadlowski;  two daughters, Margaret Dewey of Columbus, OH and Rose Sadlowski-Hopp of Virginia; three sons, Antonio “Vic” Sadlowski and Andrew Sadlowski both of Pittsburgh, PA and Joseph Sadlowski of St. Clairsville; six grandchildren, Jacob and Joseph Dewey, Christian Hopp, Lucas and Logan Sadlowski and Rebekah Sadlowski; a sister, Diane Ellison of Florida; a brother, Robert Sadlowski of Martins Ferry; half-sisters, Linda Spano of Flushing and Marsha Lenevich of Belmont; a stepsister, Gloria Holland of Illinois; stepbrothers; an aunt, Helen Kovaly Cooper of Powhatan Point; several nieces,  nephews and cousins.

Ruth C. Saffell, age 85, of Armstrongs Mills, Ohio, died Monday, November 1, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, Ohio. 

She was born May 28, 1919 at Armstrongs Mills, daughter of the late Charles E. Jackson and Ila Leona Landers Jackson.

Ruth was a homemaker and a member of Armstrongs Mills United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert C. “Perry” Saffell in 1980; a daughter, Joan Carol Saffell and two sisters, Margaret Metcalf and Mary Kocher.

Surviving are her son, Jim Saffell and his wife Linda of Jacobsburg, Ohio; three granddaughters, Stephani Saffell, Michelle Pratt and Sheri Fillon; two great grandchildren, Kristin Snider and Michael Pratt; and a great great grandson, Wiley Michael Pratt.

Perman Earl Sayre, 88, of Belmont, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, West Virginia.  He was born on July 17, 1916 in Monongalia County, West Virginia son of the late Arthur and Nellie Harker Sayre.

He was a retired employee from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel and a farmer.  Perman was a member of the United Methodist Church at Barton, Ohio.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Lunsford Sayre; a daughter, Joyce Sayre; three brothers, Bearl, James and Louis Sayre; and two sisters, Jeanette Snedeker and Pansy Sayre.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Davenport Sayre; three sons, David C. Sayre of Belmont, Paul Sayre of St. Clairsville and Ralph Sayre of Texas; a daughter, Karen Duggan of Baltimore, Ohio; two stepsons, Gerald Smigle and Joseph Smigle, Jr. both of Farmington, Ohio; two sisters, Louise Banfield of St. Clairsville and Wilma Emfield of Rayland; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; six step grandchildren and nine step great grandchildren.

Edwin Laverne “Leg” Scales, 87 of 51515 Wegee Rd., Bellaire, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at his home.

He was born April 27, 1916 in Key, Ohio. A son of the late Murray Scales and Mabel Unterzuber Scales.

Leg was a retired carpenter from the Carpenter’s Local No. 3 in Wheeling, A member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church at Key Ridge, an Army veteran of WWII and retired Army Reservist, a member of Shadyside American Legion Post 521,  the American Rabbit Breeder’s Assoc. and the Beekeeper’s Assoc.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Harold and Stewart Scales, and grandson, Clinton Dorr Montgomery.

Surviving are his wife, Minnie Goldsmith Scales; two sons, Jodia Scales of Killingsworth, CT, and Jan M. Scales of Findlay, Ohio; two daughters, Reba Mathias of Pittsburgh and Marla Montgomery of Williamstown, WV; a sister, Romaine Spansail of Granada Hills, CA; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home in Jacobsburg on Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. where services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Pete Walburn officiating. Burial follows in Holly Memorial Gardens at Pleasant Grove.

Military graveside services will be conducted by the Belmont County Council of American Legions.

 

CAROLINE SCHNEGG

Caroline “Toots” Schnegg, 90 of Clark Avenue, St. Clairsville died Sunday, May 9, 2004 at Belmont Manor, St. Clairsville.

She was born at Provident on January 22, 1914 a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Sikora Kanopsic.

Toots was a retired employee of Belmont Hills Country Club, a homemaker and member of East Richland Friends Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers Albert, Andy, John, Joe, Frank and Charlie Kanopsic and sisters Nellie Stefan, Barbara Ferkol, Sophie Klush and Mary Bruch.

She is survived by her husband George Paul Schnegg.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville where services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Wayne Ickes officiating.  Burial follows in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.

BRUNEY "BROWNY" SCYPTA

Bruney “Browny” Scypta, age 88, of St. Clairsville was called to be with his maker on Thursday, January 29, 2004.  He was born in Adena, Ohio, October 31, 1915, son of the late Jesse and Mary Blenka Scypta.

He was married to the former Mary Vicker for 67 years.  She survives.

Bruney was a loyal member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Clairsville,  a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Clairsville and the Maynard PNA Lodge.  He was a retired superintendent from Oglebay-Norton Mining Company.  He was an avid bowler, bridge player, hunter and fisherman.  He looked forward to spending time with his three children, six grandchildren,  two step grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

His surviving family members are his wife, Mary Vicker Scypta;  two daughters, Elaine (Ed) Delesk of Columbus and Christine (Frank) Targoss of Wintersville;  a son,  Gary (Jill) Scypta of Plymouth, Michigan;  two sisters, Helen Kubik of Stow, OH and Florence Dombroski of Cleveland, OH;  six grandchildren;  two step-grandchildren;  seven great grandchildren; and a special friend, Joe Kopral of Smithfield, OH.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Ronald;  three sisters,  Catherine, Mary and Leona;  and a brother, Frank.

Visitation will be on Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville.  Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Clairsville at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 2, 2004 with Father Thomas Graven the celebrant.  Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.

IVY SEROKE

Ivy Doris Seroke, 75 of Westminster Drive, St. Clairsville died Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry.

She was born at Oxford, England on November 11, 1928 a daughter of the late Edmund Edley Barlow and Ivy Siddaway Barlow.

Ivy was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church at St. Clairsville.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Barbour and a brother, Ronald Barlow.

Surviving are her husband, Leo Seroke; four sons, Albert (Melissa) Barbour of Martins Ferry; Bradley (Lea) Barbour and Scott (Pam) Barbour both Florida and Drew (Sherry) Barbour of Martins Ferry; one brother, William J. Barlow of  England; six sisters, Audrey Holland, Irene Holland Coral Holland, Pearl Adams and Sylvia Purcell all of England and Margaret Perry of Martins Ferry; 7 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville where services will be held Saturday at  11 a.m. with Pastor Laurie Armstrong officiating. Entombment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove.

HARRY SHREVE

Harry F. Shreve, 80 of Lake Wales, FL passed away Friday, July 2, 2004 at his home.

He was born October 8, 1923 at Smithfield, WV a son of the late James and Laura Sterling Shreve.

Harry resided in Canton, OH until 1972 when he retired from the Timken Co. after 30 years of service.  He then moved to Beallsville, OH where he resided until 1996 when he moved to Lake Wales.  He was a member of William McKinley Lodge #431 at Canton, was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Scottish Rite Valley of Canton, a member American Legion Post #768 at Beallsville and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Betty West Shreve; a daughter, Judy; a brother Charles Shreve and sisters, Beryl Midcap, Dolly Shreve and Grace Shreve.

He is survived by his daughters, Mrs. Linda (Curtis) Howell of Lake Wales, FL and Mrs. Helen (David) Yonak of Jacobsburg, OH; a sister, Ruth (Samuel) Furbee of Rockledge, FL; 5 grandchildren, Matt (Krysi) Arnett; Jason (Kelly) Arnett; Angela (Ron) Ford; Stephen Yonak and David Yonak and great grandchild, Eben Arnett.

Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Toothman Funeral Home, Jacobsburg, OH.  Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Beallsville Cemetery, Beallsville, OH .  Full military honors will be conducted by the Beallsville American Legion.

Masonic services will be conducted at 5:45 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

 

FAITH SHUNK

Faith Renae Shunk, infant daughter of Cheyenne F. Shunk and Mackenzie Renae Cunard died Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at East Ohio Regional Hospital.

In addition to her parents she is survived by her grandparents, Donald and Morningstar Shunk; Dick and Margie Dalton; Scott and Billie Jo Cunard.

Private services were held Saturday at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville with Pastor Mike Husted officiating Burial followed at the Davis Cemetery, Bellaire.

 

FIZZ SKUKAN

Gerald Keith “Fizz” Skukan, age 64, of St. Clairsville, died Friday, August 6, 2004 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, Ohio.  He was born March 11, 1940 at Neffs, Ohio, son of the late Frank “Jack” Skukan and Audrey Blon Skukan.

Fizz was a retired Iron Worker with Local # 549 at Wheeling and a Methodist by faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Skukan.

Surviving are a son, Jeffrey (Kim) Skukan of St. Clairsville; two daughters, Lesa Skukan of Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania and Carla Skukan of Paramount , California; a brother, Jack Lee Skukan of Cincinnati , Ohio; and two grandchildren, Haylee and Colton Skukan; a nephew, Brian; nieces, Jacqueline and Bobbi Jo all of Cincinnati, Ohio; cousins, Ken and Suz Pubal of Morristown.

STEVE SLEZAK

Steve Slezak, 90 of Pleasant Grove (Adena), Ohio formerly of Shadyside died Sunday, May 9, 2004 at McGraw Nursing Home, Pleasant Grove.

He was born at Benwood, WV on August 2, 1913 a son of the late Sylvester and Theresa Valentovic Slezak.

Steve was a retired licensed stationary boiler engineer for Consolidation Coal Co. at Georgetown, a member of the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and United Mine Workers Local 7690.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Helen Parish Slezak in 1996; his granddaughter Amy Pickering and a brother Sylvester Slezak, Jr.

He is survived by his daughter Emily Jean (Bruce) Pickering of Worthington, OH; his grandson and best fishing buddy Dr. Eric Pickering of Columbus, OH; a brother Michael Slezak of Troup, TX his sisters Mary Krupa, Theresa Manley and Katherine Sabatina all of Shadyside and Julia Kipp of Willoughby, OH.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to time of services at 11 a.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville with Rev. Steve Norden officiating.  Burial follows at the Warnock Cemetery.

 

CHARLIE W. SMITH

Charles Wallace “Charlie” Smith, age 73, of St. Clairsville and formerly of New Matamoras, OH, died Thursday, June 10, 2004 at his home.  He was born January 21, 1931 at Bellaire, Ohio, son of the late Charles Wilfred Smith and Mary Catherine Wallace Smith.

He was a retired employee from Ormet Corporation; a member of New Matamoras Baptist Church; a U. S. Coast Guard veteran serving during the Korean War; a member of Belmont Lodge # 16 F. & A.M. at St. Clairsville; Royal and Select Masons of Ohio, Bellaire Council # 87; Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, Bellaire Chapter # 107; Knights Templar, Hope Commandery # 26 at Bridgeport; and the American Legion post # 64 at Marietta.

Surviving are three daughters, Kimberly (Hal) Payne of Marietta, Ohio, Marnie (Roger) Harrell of New Lexington, Ohio and Jana (Brian) Bauman of Lexington, SC; a son, John Smith of Belpre, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Tommy Barker, Meghan Barker, Andrew Harrell, Natalie Harrell, Kaylei Bauman, Michael Bauman, Katelynn Smith and Tanner “T.J.” Smith.

ROBERT  J.  SOLAR

Robert J. Solar, 59, of St. Clairsville, was born June 18, 1944 in Maynard Ohio.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Steve Solar and Mary Solar Sylagji.  Bob passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2004 at Ohio Valley Medical Center. 

Bob leaves behind his beloved and devoted wife of 36 years, Nancy Gillam Solar.  Other surviving family members are his sister, Rosemarie Stando and a brother, Steve Solar and his wife Elaine;  brother-in-law, Mitch Gillam and sister-in-law, Mary Gillam and several nieces and nephews.

Bob is a graduate of Bethany College where he lettered in football and baseball.  In 1989 Bob was elected to the Bethany Athletic Hall of Fame.  He also received his Masters Degree in Guidance Counseling from WVU.

Bob began his teaching career at Union Local High School, he then continued his career at Buckeye Local school system, where he was an assistant basketball coach and head baseball coach until his retirement.

Bob played sandlot baseball in Maynard for many years.  He was Past President and Commissioner of the Ohio Valley Baseball League and the current Director of OVAC baseball.

He was a member of the St. Clairsville Moose Lodge # 2504; Bethany Alumni and Athletic Association; Cadiz Country Club and the Ohio Guidance Counselor Association.

He was a member of the Saint Cyril Methodius Orthodox Church in Bellaire and St. John the Divine Orthodox Church in Wheeling.

EDWARD SOUKUP

Edward J. Soukup, 80 of Maynard, Ohio died Wednesday, February 11, 2004.  He was born July 2, 1923 at Maynard a son of the late Annie and Joseph Soukup.

Edward was a retired employee of Consol, a member of the Maynard United Methodist Church, member and recording secretary of American Legion Post #666 at Maynard and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II having served in Company A, 723rd Railway Operations Battalion in European Theatre.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters Virginia Homard and Ruth Serio.

Edward is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anne Kowalczyk Soukup, 5 daughters, Pam (Perry) Jones of St. Clairsville; Denise (David) Berilla of Rehobeth Beach, Del.; Lynne (Edward) Odorizzi of Dublin, OH; Leigh (Stanley) Pempek of Fairpoint and Lisa (Chester) Mick of St. Clairsville; sisters, Mildred (Kalmon) Sabo of Maynard and Dorothy (Jim) Bozick of Lima, OH and brother, Donald (Lil) Soukup of St. Clairsville. CLIFFORD DANIEL STACK, Jr.

Clifford Daniel Stack, Jr., age 63, of Belmont, died Saturday, September 11, 2004 at his home.  He was born August 31, 1941 at Willow Grove, Ohio, son of Mildred V. Kasik Stack and the late Clifford D. Stack, Sr.

He was a retired employee from Marietta Coal Company and a member of Bannock United Methodist Church.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Amy and an infant grandson, Hunter.

Surviving in addition to his mother, Mildred V. Stack of St. Clairsville, are his wife, Nancy Herbert Stack; a daughter, Cristi Kalinowski of Belmont; a son, Clifford “Dan” Stack, III and his wife Jennifer of Belmont; five grandchildren, John Gerdau, Amy Kalinowski, Billy, Cortney and Brittany Stack; a brother, David Stack of St. Clairsville and a sister, Oralee Johnson of Indiana.

Marian Lee Stando, 53 of St. Clairsville died Thursday, April 29, 2004 at her home. She was born February 28, 1951 in Wheeling, a daughter of the late J. Irvin Cilles and Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Cilles.

She was a former employee of Rosario’s in St. Clairsville and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Clairsville.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Stando of St. Clairsvile; a sister, Janet Porter and her husband J. Terrance of Ft. Myers, FL; brothers John Irvin Cilles and his wife Judy of Fairpoint,  Gregory J. Cilles and his wife Deborah of St. Clairsville; best friend, Louis J. Stando; nieces and nephews, Kathleen Ann Kimball, John David Porter, Sara Emily Cilles, Matthew John Cilles, Jack Cilles, Garrett Cilles; great niece and nephew, Kyra Elizabeth Kimball and Jack Kimball.

HELEN STEADMAN

Helen Louise Steadman, 80, of Tomlinson Run Road, Jacobsburg, Ohio, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004 at her home.

She was born Oct. 25, 1923, at Bellaire, a daughter of the late William E. and Lavon Stombaugh Sutton and stepmother Virginia Plunkett Sutton.

Helen was a 1942 graduate of Bellaire High School, a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church at Dilles Bottom.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, John Charles (Jack) Steadman and two sisters, Martha Rose Wiley and Dorothy Jean Liberati.

Surviving are four children, Charles (Kathy) Steadman of Jacobsburg; Cheryl (James) Tippie of Goldthwaite, Texas; Sandra Wisor and Kathie (Don) Bumgardner, both of Jacobs- burg; one brother, William Sutton of Bellaire; 17 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

DONALD STOKES, SR.

Donald Charles Stokes, Sr., 72 of Pipe Creek Rd., Jacobsburg died Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at his home.

He was born May 8, 1932 in Jacobsburg. A son of the late Richard Stokes and Carrie Graham Stokes.

He was a retired employee of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel's Martins Ferry Plant, a Methodist, and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Lee Palmer Stokes; two daughters, April Koonce and her husband Terry and Robin Virginia Day and her husband David of Jacobsburg; a son, Donald Charles Stokes, Jr. and his wife Ronda of Jacobsburg; two brothers, Robert Stokes of Warnock, Richard Duane Stokes of Shadyside: three sisters, Twila Layton of Fairborn, Ohio, Blanch Murray of Springfield, Ohio and Mary Davidson of Marysville, Ohio; 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

MARJORIE STRAUSS

Marjorie A. Strauss, 61 of Bridgeport, Ohio and life long resident of Belmont County died Friday, November 19, 2004 at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling.

She was born at Martins Ferry, Ohio July 16, 1943 a daughter of the late John L and Helen M. Ostroski Strauss.

Marge was a graduate of St. John Central High School at Bellaire and attended the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Wheeling Jesuit University and the American Institute of Banking.  She had been an employee of the Bank of Wheeling and Ogden Newspapers and was currently employed at T.J. Maxx at the Ohio Valley Mall.  She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church at Wofhurst where she was a member of the Catholic Women’s Club having served as president for 8 years.  She also served as CWC president for Presentation Deanery for the Diocese of Steubenville and was a Eucharistic minister to the shut-in’s of St. Joseph Church.  In addition she served as a volunteer at the Catholic Neighborhood Center of Wheeling where she delivered “Meals on Wheels” as well as doing prison ministry at the West Virginia Northern Jail and the West Virginia State Prison for Women.

She is survived by a brother, John J. “Jack” Strauss of Fairfax Station, Virginia; a sister, Janet L Maxian of Houston, Texas; a nephew, Michael Maxian and nieces Amanda and Lucy Maxian.

Friends will be received on Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville with Vigil services at 1 p.m..  Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church at Wolfhurst with Msgr. Mark Froehlich as celebrant.  Entombment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Grove.

Virginia E. Stukey, 82, of Alledonia, Ohio, died Monday, March 22, 2004 at Shadyside Care Center, Shadyside, Ohio.

She was born at Armstrongs Mills, Ohio, on May 3, 1921, a daughter of the late Harry and Annabelle Dawson Good.

Virginia was a homemaker and a member of the Armstrongs Mills United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Stukey; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Stukey.

Surviving are her son, Larry Stukey of Alledonia; a daughter, Linda Baker of Bellaire; a brother, Harry Good of Vermillion, Ohio; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Bernardine R. Sykes, 64 of Morristown, Ohio died Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at her home. She was born September 1, 1940 in Belmont County, daughter of the late Fred and Wilda Hudak.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lafferty and the Catholic Women’s Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Michael Scott Sykes; a brother, Frank Hudak; a sister, Gertrude Kiss; and a grandson, David Michael Wilson II.

Surviving are her husband, Richard A. Sykes, Sr.; six children, Richard A. Sykes, Jr. of Lafferty, Barbara J. Stewart of Flushing, Roger A. Sykes of Bethesda, Brian S. Sykes of Quaker City, Rebecca L. Templeton of Wheeling and Melissa J. Friends will be received on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral home in St.Clairsville. A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lafferty with Father Chester Pabin the celebrant. Burial follows in Belmont County Memorial Park, St. Clairsville.

There will be a vigil service at 8:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

BILL TAYLOR

William J. “Bill” Taylor, Sr., 85 of St. Clairsville passed away peacefully at Ohio Valley Medical Center on Saturday, January 3, 2004.

He was born in Armstrongs Mills, Ohio on May 6, 1918, a son of the late George and Mary McMaster Taylor.  Also preceding him in his death were eight brothers and sisters.  Bill married Helen Dunlap on March 31, 1947 who survives him along with his sister Mary Porterfield of St. Clairsville; two sons and daughters-in-law William “Jeff”, Jr and Noreen of Reynoldsburg; Michael and Kimberly of Ashville; his daughter Susan of St. Clairsville; four grandsons, Cory and Camron Taylor, James and Jerry McAfee; a great granddaughter Madyson McAfee and many nieces and nephews.

Bill joined the First Presbyterian Church in St. Clairsville in 1935 where he was a long time member of the choir up until 2001.  His love of music lead him to become a member of St. Clairsville’s first ever high school band in the 1930’s and he remained a member in the St. C. Alumni Association.  Bill also was one of the first members of Barb’s Boys, a local singing group that was near and dear to his heart.

He was one of the original members of the St. Clairsville Lions Club and a charter member of the St. Clairsville Saints Club that he helped to form in 1941.  He was honored just this fall by the Saints Club for his role as a founding member.

Before moving home to St. Clairsville in 1971, Bill and his family resided in Cadiz where he was active in the Presbyterian Church as well as local civic organizations.  He retired from Consol Coal in 1980 after forty years of service to the mining industry, having operated the Mountaineer Shovel for many of those years.

Family and friends will be received at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to time of service at 1 p.m. with Rev. Homer Harden officiating.  Burial will follow at Belmont Memorial Park at St. Clairsville.

CHARLES S. TAYLOR

Charles S. Taylor, age 85, of Shadyside , Ohio died Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at Belmont Community Hospital , Bellaire , Ohio .  He was born May 9, 1918 at Key, Ohio , son of the late Herman J. and Lucy McKelvey Taylor.

He was a retired U. S. Navy Captain serving during World War II and the Korean War.  Charles was a former employee of the Village of Shadyside and the former Belmont Casket Company at Shadyside; he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Shadyside and a member of Shadyside Lodge # 724 F. & A.M. at Shadyside 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Alma Montgomery and Laura Decker; and four brothers, Robert, William, George and E. Frazier Taylor.

Surviving are his wife, Kathleen I. Thomson Taylor;  a son, Charles Taylor of Yellow Springs, Ohio;  a daughter, Suzanne Tolarchyk of Hillsborough, N.C.;  a sister, Mary Brown Webber of Key, Ohio;  a brother, Herbert Lee Taylor of Key, Ohio;  two grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. 

The Taylor family will receive friends on Friday from 1:30 p.m. until time of Memorial Services at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church at Shadyside with Pastor Alice Phillips officiating.

MARY TAYLOR

Mary Alice Taylor, 93, formerly of Cash Ridge Rd., Shadyside died Thursday, December 30, 2004 at the Shadyside Care Center.

She was born on September 30, 1911 in Lafferty, Ohio, a daughter of the late Robert Graham and Florence Sindeldecker Graham.

She was a Methodist.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William David Taylor; two children, Clara Mae & Hovey Emerson Taylor; a grandson, Eric Slack; six brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are six children, Eileen (Carl) Slack and James (Shirley) Taylor both of Bellaire, William D. Taylor, Jr. of Neffs, Virginia Lee (Frank) Horn of Shadyside, Naomi Schrum (Howard Smith) of St. Clairsville, and Kathryn (Dan) Graham of Parkersburg; 29 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family with Pastor Pe te Walburn officiating. Burial follows in Jacobsburg Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Shadyside Care Center’s Activities Fund.

RALPH W. TAYLOR, Sr.

Ralph William Taylor, Sr., age 80, of 135 Woodrow Avenue, St. Clairsville, Ohio, died Thursday, September 16, 2004 at Bell Nursing Home, Morristown. 

He was born August 15, 1924 at St. Clairsville, son of the late Benjamin and Wanda McKnight Taylor.

Ralph retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation’s Martins Ferry Plant in 1978; he was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II; a member of the First Christian Church at St. Clairsville; a member of the American Legion Post # 159 at St. Clairsville and former volunteer for the St. C. V.F.D.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Reed Taylor; a brother, Benjamin Taylor and a sister, Pearl Davis.

Surviving are a son, Ralph W. Taylor, Jr. and his wife, Coralyn of St. Clairsville; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Taylor and Linda Sue Byrne and her husband Jack all of St. Clairsville; three grandchildren, Crystal Johnson and Amber Byrne both of St. Clairsville and Eric Taylor of Barnesville; a great grandson, Logan Johnson; a brother, Don Taylor of Xenia, Ohio; two sisters, Elsie Pieffer of Dayton, Ohio and Bertha Brown of San Antonio, Texas; two step grandchildren and two step great grandsons.

Family and friends will be received on Sunday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, where services will be held on Monday, September 20, 2004 at 1 p.m.  Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville, Ohio.

 

DAVID MARTIN TELFER

David Martin Telfer, age 76, of Joella Drive, St. Clairsville, died Sunday, July 11, 2004 at his home.  He was born April 14, 1928 at Harrisville, Ohio, son of the late Wayne and Vada Blackledge Telfer.

He was retired from Consolidation Coal Company, Georgetown Communications Center.  He was a member of the Harrisville United Methodist Church, a U. S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post #  525, at Adena.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Telfer; a sister, Ruth Green and a cousin, Earl Blackledge.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce Pathorski Haught Telfer; two daughters, Barbara (James) Espinosa of Massillon, Ohio and Sandra Whitacre of Canton, Ohio; two sons, Michael D. Telfer of Cherokee, Oklahoma and Ernie Telfer of California; a stepdaughter, Sue Ellen (John) Black of Holly Springs, NC; a stepson, Michael Haught of Byesville, Ohio; two sisters, Martha (Fred) Koehler of Adena and Marjorie (Wayne) Hill of Harrisville; a brother, Richard (Grace) Telfer of Florida; 5 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and 3 step grandchildren.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio, where services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m., with Rev. James McKenzie officiating.  Burial will follow at Olive Branch Cemetery, Harrisville, Ohio where Full Military Graveside Honors will be conducted by the American Legion.

JAMES THALMAN

James Edward Thalman, 74 of St. Clairsville, Ohio died Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling.

He was born in Wheeling on April 14, 1930 a son of the late Henry C. and Catherine Birmingham Thalman.

He graduated from Wheeling Central Catholic High School in 1948 and was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD where he graduated in 1953.  He served as a Lieutenant in the Navy in Europe and the Korean War and retired after 20 years as a Blue & Gold officer.  He facilitated the appointment of many Ohio Valley Youth with the Naval Academy.

Jim was a lubrication engineer with Chevron Oil and a member of the Association of Lubrication Engineers.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Parish in St. Clairsville and was a member of the Holy Name Society. 

Jim was a great animal lover and equine enthusiast and he loved spending time at is daughter and son-in-law’s farm.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother William Thalman; a sister, Rosemary Chorovich and an infant brother, Henry Thalman.He is survived by his wife, Kathryn “Kitty” Stuntz Thalman; two daughters, Kathryn Ann Thalman of St. Clairsville and Colleen McConaghy and her husband Drew of St. Clairsville; grandchildren Mary Kathryn McConaghy and Ann Marie McConaghy and his sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Baumler of Buffalo, NY.

Friends will be received on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home, St. Clairsville.  Concelebrated Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Clairsville with Father Christopher Foxhoven and Father Thomas Schiffer at co-celebrants.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling at the convenience of the family.

ROGER D. TOOTHMAN

Roger D. Toothman, 60 of Jacobsburg, Ohio completed his journey home, August 20, 2004.

He was a retired foreman for Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel and a member of Weyer Lodge No. 541 F&AM in Centerville.

He was preceded in death by his brother Terry, his father, Emmett and his mother, Kathryn.

Roger lovingly leaves behind his partner of 41 years, Janet; his son, Ronald and significant other Anne of St.Clairsville, Ohio; his daughter Terrie and husband Tim of Jacobsburg, Ohio, his daughter Debbie of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren, Meagen of Cincinnati, Ohio, Shelby of Jacobsburg, Ohio, Bryce and Brittany of Atlanta, GA., and Timmy Cole of Rochester, PA.; Roger also sends his love to Donna and Jessie of Bethesda, Ohio, to his niece, Diana of Columbus, Ohio and to the many other friends and relatives left behind.

              LLOYD HOUSTON "PUG" TUCKER, Sr.

Lloyd Houston “Pug” Tucker, Sr., 71 of Homko Rd., Jacobsburg died Thursday, March 4, 2004 at Ohio Valley Medical Center in Wheeling.

He was born February 26, 1933 in Hometown, WV. A son of the late James Arthur Tucker and Eva Bailey Tucker.

He was a retired coal miner from North American Coal Company’s No. 3 Mine, and a member of Church Alive in Key, Ohio.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Charlotte Margaret Bailey Tucker; sisters, Annabelle Carney and Violet Bailey; grandson, Micah Shawn Tucker.

Surviving are his wife, Norma Jean Palmer McGill Tucker; two sons, Rickie Lee Tucker and Lloyd Tucker, Jr. of Jacobsburg; daughter Charlotte Ann Evans of Shadyside; step daughters, Andrea Elaine McGill of Powhatan Point and Kimberly Sue Tucker of Jacobsburg; sister, Genevieve Landers of Bancroft, WV.; brothers, Eldon Tucker of Bancroft, WV., and Gerald Tucker of Indiana.; 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

FRED VAN DYNE, Sr.

Fred D. VanDyne, Sr., 91, of East Captina Highway, Jacobsburg, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at Belmont Community Hospital, Bellaire.  He was born on July 20, 1912 at Jacobsburg, Ohio son of the late Frank Hudson VanDyne and Lucy Burkhart VanDyne.

He was a retired employee from Knight Manufacturing and the former Belmont Casket Company and a member of the Church of Christ, Armstrongs Mills.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Martha Adella VanDyne;  a great grandson, Jamie Lee Cline;  and three brothers, Wayne, Arnold and Warner VanDyne.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Minnie Mayhugh VanDyne;  five sons, Fred D. VanDyne, Jr. and his wife Helen of Powhatan Point, Larry VanDyne and his wife Sarah of Lebanon Church, VA, Homer VanDyne and his wife Betty of Beallsville, Harold VanDyne and his wife Darlene of Jacobsburg and Alan VanDyne of Columbus, OH;  four daughters, Juanita Graham and her husband George of Powhatan Point, Charlotte Smith and her husband Don of Mather, PA, Carol Ondrejko and her husband John of Clinton, MD and Barbara Smith and her husband Charles of Barnesville;  sixteen grandchildren,  and twenty-four great grandchildren.
