She was born July 15, 1917 in Wert County, West Virginia. She was a retired employee of the Bobbie Brooks Garment Company at Bellaire and former Neffs Librarian. Francena was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church at Key and a member of Weyer Chapter # 515, Order of Eastern Star at Centerville. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Roxy Kearns; her husband, Francis D. “Bub” Bailey; and special sister-in-law, Lorena Bailey. Surviving are two sons, John “Jack” Bailey of Neffs and Melvin Bailey of Key; a daughter, Sharon Hinkle of North Marengo, OH; a brother, Buddy Goldsmith of Parkersburg, WV; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.. She was born Dec. 19, 1933 at St. Clairsville, a daughter of the late Roman and Mary Moroski Borovich.Anna was a former employee of Imperial Glass at Bellaire and Amino's Chicken and Ribs at St. Clairsville. She was a member of RSVP at St. Clairsville, Glencoe Senior Citizens, Neffs American Legion Auxiliary and the Ajax Turner Senior Center at Clarksville, Tenn. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dixon Ball and sisters, Sophia Ruble and Mary Trytko. SONNY BARNES Martin Edward “Sonny” Barnes, Jr., 60 of Willow Grove Rd., Bellaire, died Sunday, June 1, 2003 at his home. He was born March 19, 1943 at Bellaire. A son of Rose Marie Florek Barnes and the late Martin Edward “Chuck” Barnes, Sr. He was a retired employee of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. at Beech Bottom, a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Neffs, and Drummer and Singer of the Deep Down Country Band. Surviving in addition to his mother of Bell Nursing Home ; are his wife, Judith Clark Barnes; a son, Martin Daniel Barnes and his wife Amy Jo of Colerain; a daughter, Heidi Lynn Brown and her husband Gary E. of Centerville; two brothers, Mitch Barnes and Bob Barnes both of Neffs; three sisters, Marlene J. Cramer of Neffs, Carole R. Figura of Willow Grove, and Beverly A. Santini of Uniontown; two grandchildren Kayla June Barnes and Logan Daniel Barnes; several nieces and nephews. MILEVA BAYAT Mileva Bayat, 93 of Overbaugh Avenue, St. Clairsville died Sunday, December 21, 2003 at Park Health Center, St. Clairsville. She was born at Stolac, Yugoslavia on June 2, 1910 a daughter of the late Nickola and Mitra Jovacevich Hamovic. Mileva came to America from Yugoslavia in 1936. She was a home maker, a member of Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church at Steubenville, St. Clairsville Senior Citizens and SNF Lodge #21. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Vido Bayat. Surviving are a daughter, Ksenia Davis of Washington, D.C.; sons, Branko Bayat of St. Clairsville; Nick Bayat of Bethel Park, PA and Ted Bayat of Lancaster, OH, a sister, Rada of Bosnia; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. BERNICE BECK Bernice Arlene Parker Beck, 70 of Uniontown died Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at the Crestview Health Care Center, St.Clairsville. She was born February 13, 1933 in Centerville, a daughter of the late William H. Parker and Lenora E. Foreman Parker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Billie and Robert Parker; a sister, Maxine Moore. Surviving are her husband, Ray L. Beck; a son, Chris L. Beck of Flushing; two daughters, Lisa R. Howell of Lafferty and Beth Ann Miller of St.Clairsville; a brother, Thomas E. Parker of Shadyside and a sister, Lydia Wallace of Barnesville; eight grandchildren, Chris “Toby” Beck who resided with his grandparents in Uniontown, Melissa and Emily Beck, Marisa and Ryan Vetula, and Brandon, Justin, and Michaela Miller. MARY BELL Mary Elizabeth Bell, 103 of Avon, Indiana formerly of Flushing died Saturday, January 25, 2003 at the Heartland Health Care Center in Avon. She was born July 11, 1899 in Holloway, a daughter of the late Oscar VanFossen and Fannie Whiston VanFossen. She was a member of the Flushing United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Bell; a daughter, Dorothy Stephens; her twin brother, Harry VanFossen and brothers, Alfred and Robert VanFossen. Surviving are a son, Harry K. Bell and his wife Jane of Heritage Lake, Indiana; 6 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. F. DALE BETHEL F. Dale Bethel, 89 of Parshall Avenue, St. Clairsville died Monday, July 21, 2003 at Wheeling Hospital. He was born near Flushing, Ohio on December 28, 1913 a son of the late Otis and Mary Craig Bethel. Dale was a school teacher in the Portsmouth and Bellaire School Districts retiring after 39 years. He then worked as a substitute teacher for an additional ten years in the Union Local, Shadyside and St. Clairsville School Districts. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church at St. Clairsville where he served as an Elder and Sunday School Superintendent. Dale served four terms on the St. Clairsville City Council and four years as director of the Ohio Retired Teachers Assoc. and was a former chairman of the board of St. Clairsville Union Cemetery Assoc.. He served two terms as president of the AARP and was a former member of the St. Clairsville Noon Rotary Club. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Floy Rinkes and Mildred Morris. Dale is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth “Libby” Pitzer Bethel; two daughters, Patty Stegall of Portsmouth, VA and Beverly Heddleson of Caldwell, OH; one son, Art Bethel of Fuquay Varina, NC; a brother, Craig Bethel of St. Clairsville; nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. HELEN A. SAUNDERS BITTINGER Helen A. Saunders Bittinger, 82, formerly of Jacobsburg and Bethesda, died Tuesday, December 17, 2002 at Summit Acres Nursing Home, Caldwell, OH. She was born July 1, 1920 in Warnock, Ohio, daughter of the late Leander and Pearl Workman Groves. She was a retired Nurses Aide from Bell Nursing Home at Morristown; attended the Hillcrest Bible Church; and was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge at Caldwell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Saunders; her second husband, Boyd Kerr Bittinger; three brothers, Robert, Charles and Lewis Groves. ROBERT BONNELL Robert “Bob” Bonnell, 83 of Hutchinson Drive, St. Clairsville died Monday, May 5, 2003 at Forest Hill Nursing Home, St. Clairsville. He was born at Wheeling on November 29, 1919 a son of the late Harry and Clara Belle Baker Bonnell. Bob was an employee of C & P Telephone at Wheeling, retiring due to illness in 1974 with 33 years of service. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at St. Clairsville. He was also a member of Osiris Shrine, Wheeling and Past Monarch of El Tor Grotto, Wheeling where he was a member of the Marching Patrol and was the last Demolay Dad for St. Clairsville Chapter of Demolay, a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and a Life Member of the Communications Workers of America. Bob served in the U.S. Army during World War II with Headquarters of the 596th Signal Air Warning Battalion. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Harold and Homer Bonnell and sisters Thelma Bringman and Catherine Holland. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nora Mae “Betty” Clark Bonnell, his sons Robert W. Bonnell and his wife Kathy and Kenneth L. Bonnell and his wife Judy all of St. Clairsville, his sister Virginia Wolf of Wheeling Island, grandchildren Kim, Jim, Kristin and Jennifer and great granddaughter Audrey Elaine Lowe and was a very special uncle to several nieces and nephews in Atlanta, Ga. ROBERT W. “BOB” BONNELL Robert William “Bob” Bonnell, age 54, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, died Friday, August 29, 2003 at his home. He was born April 3, 1949 at Wheeling, WV, son of Nora Mae “Betty” Conaway Bonnell and the late Robert Bonnell. He was a former sales manager of Radio Shack at Benwood and Warwood; a former certified nurses aide for the former Star Nursing Home at Morristown and graduate of the Career Academy of Broadcasting in Columbus. Bob was a member of First Presbyterian Church at Wheeling. He was a U. S. Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War serving from 1968 to 1977; a Past Commander and Chaplin of the American Legion Post 227 at Bridgeport and for the Belmont County Council of American Legions. He was Past Commander of the DAV Chapter 121 at Barnesville and for the Eighth District DAV; and former coach of the Bridgeport Legion Baseball Team. He was preceded in death by his father. Surviving in addition to his mother, Nora Mae “Betty” Bonnell of St. Clairsville are his wife, Kathleen Hess Bonnell; a daughter, Kimberly Maye Lowe and husband Greg of Reynoldsburg, OH; a son, James Michael of Clintonville, OH; a special granddaughter, Audrey Elaine Lowe; a brother, Kenneth L. and his wife Judy of St. Clairsville; and two nieces Kristen and Jennifer; and mother-in-law, Elaine Hess Stewart. DOROTHY BOONE Dorothy Boone, 99 formerly of Vine St., Martins Ferry died Friday, September 12, 2003 at the Shadyside Care Center. She was born October 29, 1903 in Armstrongs Mills, Ohio. A daughter of the late John Wesley Taylor and Martha Jane Danford Taylor. She was a former employee of the U.S. Postal Service at St.Clairsville and a member of the Martins Ferry Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Zera Paul Boone, Sr.; a son, Zera Paul Boone, Jr.; two brothers, Cyril Bernard Taylor and Chester Gladis Taylor; two sisters, Eula Slay and Virda C. Neff. Surviving are three nephews, Glenn Slay of Caldwell, Harry Neff of Cleveland, and John Neff of Colorado. KENNETH BRENDEL Kenneth Paul Joseph Brendel, 66 of Johnet Dr., St.Clairsville died Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry. He was born October 5, 1936 in Cincinnati. A son of the late Herman Stephen Brendel and Gertrude Elizabeth Nuesse Brendel. He was a retired employee of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel’s Steubenville Plant, a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wolfhurst, and a U.S. Air Force veteran. Surviving are his beloved wife and best friend, Jenny Busby Brendel; a son, Kevin Patrick Brendel and his wife Patricia of Manassas Park, Virginia; two sisters, Joan Johns of Cincinnati and Lois Duwel of Indianapolis, IN.; two grandchildren, Kyle Paul Brendel and Kelly Patricia Brendel. THOMAS BRADFORD Thomas Paisley Bradford, 81 of Park Drive, St. Clairsville died Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at the Continuous Care Center of Wheeling Hospital. He was born at Cleveland, OH, November 17, 1921 a son of the late Thomas Nash Bradford and Ruth Paisley Bradford. Tom was a retired mining engineer for Consolidation Coal Co. He was a graduate of Linsley Institute, Wheeling, Lehigh University and the University of Tulsa in Pipeline Engineering. He was a member of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church at Wheeling where he served as an Elder, a member of Kanawha Lodge A.F.& A.M. at Charleston, a former member of the Fort Henry Club and the Wheeling Country Club and was a World War II veteran having served in the Army Corps of Engineers. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson, Douglas Bradford. Surviving are his wife Catherine Rice Bradford; a son Thomas Paisley Bradford, Jr. of St. Clairsville; his sisters, Ruth Mann and Margaret Akers both of Wheeling and grandsons, Thomas Patrick Bradford and Nicholas J. JACK E. BRESTLE Jack E. Brestle, age 73, of St. Clairsville died Tuesday, September 9, 2003 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, OH. He was born September 12, 1929 at Bridgeport, Ohio, son of the late Edward and Sarah Robb Brestle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters. Jack is survived by his loving wife of fifty-two years, Pauline King Brestle; a daughter, Vicki Armantrout of St. Clairsville; a son, Keith Brestle of Belmont; three grandchildren, Bryce Armantrout of Huron, Ohio, Morgan and Tyler Armantrout both of St. Clairsville; a sister, Mary Foster of Dunedin, Florida; several nieces and nephews. He retired a T/Sergeant after 20 years of military service from the U. S. Air Force; he was also retired from Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation. Jack was a member of the East Richland Friends Church; the American Legion Post # 159; a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 5356 and a member of Belmont Lodge # 16 F. & A.M. all of St. Clairsville. A daughter of the late James Merwood Childers and Flora Kratz Childers. She was a retired clerk from the former JC Penney Store in Bellaire, a former employee of Hanna Coal at Willow Grove and a member of the Coalbrook Presbyterian Church in Neffs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Shirley Childers and Dorothy Curtin; and a brother, Alden Childers. RALPH F. CLARK Ralph F. Clark, age 85, of Lloydsville, Ohio, died Sunday, January 19, 2003 at East Ohio Regional Hospital, Martins Ferry, Ohio. He was born on June 27, 1917 in High Ridge, Ohio, son of the late Harvey Hugh Clark and Elizabeth McGraw Clark. Ralph was a retired employee from Ohio Edison’s R. E. Berger Plant; former co-owner of Clark’s IGA at Lloydsville and a former coal miner. He was a member of the Lloydsville United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey M. Clark; five brothers, Russell Clark, Robert Clark, Arthur Clark, Ray Clark and Earl Clark; and four sisters, Elsie Clark, Annie DePoy, Rena Kettlewell and Margaret Adams. IDELLA DEMKOWICZ Idella S. “Della” Demkowicz, 83, known lovingly to her family as “Bubs” died peacefully at the Stow Glen Retirement Center on August 20, 2003. She was born in McKees Rocks, PA on January 8, 1920 to Mike and Stella Pytlak. She lived most of her life in Neffs until relocating to Brimfield, OH in 1991. Her husband, Fred, died in 1981. She was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Neffs where she had belonged to the Catholic Women’s Club, the St. Francis Society, the church choir and the CCD teaching ministry. She served her community as library clerk in the Neffs Public Library for twelve years before retiring to travel with her husband. Della’s greatest joy in life was her family. She took pride in their accomplishments, encouraging them to pursue higher education. Being denied the opportunity of a high school education because of the Great Depression era only heightened Della’s zeal for learning. She role modeled life long learning by studying for and acquiring an Ohio GED Certificate at the age of 72. Later she attended classes at Kent State University. In 2002 she and daughters Judy and Marcia graduated from the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, the oldest Book Club in the country. In addition to her husband of 42 years, she was preceded in death by brothers Alex and Ronald and sister Helen. CLYDE DUFFEY Clyde E. Duffey, Jr., 83 of Taylor Lane, St. Clairsville and former Barnesville resident died Monday, September 8, 2003 at the Barnesville Health Care Center. He was born at Bethesda on September 12, 1919 a son of the late Clyde E. Duffey, Sr. and Mary Gayle Todd Duffey. Clyde was employed by the Railway Mail Service for 20 years and retired after 13 years with the Wheeling Post Office. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II having served as an aerial engineer on a B-17 “Flying Fortress” with the 447th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force. He was also a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post 159 and a life member of VFW Post 5356 all at St. Clairsville. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Eleanor O’Connor formerly of St. Louis, MO and Irene Hackett formerly of Barnesville. Stephanie was born June 7, 1993 and Brittany was born December 21, 1994 both at Wheeling, West Virginia, daughters of Amy Lynn Tyrell Faulkner and James J. Faulkner. They both were enrolled at Union Local Elementary School where Stephanie was in fourth grade and Brittany was in second grade. They also attended the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. The girls were both active in The Girl Scouts with Stephanie in Troop # 4619 and Brittany in Troop # 3158 and their mother, Amy Faulkner, serving as Troop Leader and Michele Williams the Assistant Leader; they were both active in cheerleading camps; and Stephanie was on the fourth grade Union Local Jets Basketball Team. Enid was a homemaker, a member of the Belmont Ridge Christian Church and a member of the former Grange at Alledonia. KAREN YVONNE GOFF Karen Yvonne Goff, 61 of Cadiz formerly of St. Clairsville and Bellaire died Saturday, January 25, 2003 at Trinity Medical Center, Steubenville. She was born in Belmont County August 28, 1941 a daughter of the late William Edgar Jeffers and Stella Yoblonski Jeffers. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ellen Jeffers. Surviving are a daughter, Karen Williams of Holloway and a son Gary R. Goff of Cincinnati; five brothers, Ronald E. KENNETH R. GRAHAM Kenneth R. Graham, age 76, of Little Captina Road, Powhatan Point, Ohio, died Saturday, April 5, 2003 at Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus, OH after a lengthy illness. He was born December 28, 1926 at Powhatan Point, Ohio, son of Stella Kanzigg Graham and the late Daniel B. Graham. Kenneth was a retired employee from North American Coal Company # 3 mine and a dairy farmer. He was a Christian by faith and a member of Christ’s Church in heaven and attended the Grandview Christian Church for many years. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in the Pacific Theater. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Wilbur Graham. She was born January 4, 1916 in Armstrongs Mills a daughter of the late George M. Taylor and Mary M. McMaster Taylor. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in St.Clairsville and a charter member of the Gardener’s Forum in St.Clairsville. DAVID W. HARDESTY David William Hardesty, 78 of Harrison Twp., Michigan died Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at his home. He was born at Wheeling, September 16, 1924 a son of the late J. Paul Hardesty and Ruth Smiley Hardesty. David grew up in St. Clairsville and was a 1943 graduate of St. Clairsville High School. After graduation he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He held a Bachelors and Masters degree in chemical engineering from Ohio State University. David retired after 36 years as a research engineer with General Motors in Detroit. He is survived by three brothers, Robert S. Hardesty of St. Clairsville; John R. Hardesty (Nancy) of Gold Canyon, AZ and C. Richard Hardesty (Dorothy) of Kent, OH. RICHARD HEAGIN Richard R. “Dick” Heagin, 70 of Valek Road St. Clairsville died Thursday, August 21, 2003 at Wheeling Hospital. He was born February 5, 1933 at Wheeling a son of the late John and Alice Monahan Heagin. Dick retired with 26 years of service as the Fire Safety Educator and Investigator with the Ohio Fire Marshal’s office. He had over 46 years of service working with local fire departments and went to work for the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal’s Office and Fire Prevention Bureau in 1971 receiving his certification through Ohio State University. He was a certified EMTA and taught fire science at West Virginia Northern Community College and was an instructor at the Ohio State Fire School and at regional fire schools in the tri-state area. Dick was a member of the Belmont County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities and served for 18 years on the Belco Crafts/Belmont Industries board of directors where he served as president for six years. He was involved with the Belmont County Emergency Management Agency and was a member of the CISD team. He also served as a volunteer with the Cumberland Trail Fire Department since 1985 where he served as president of the Fireman’s Assoc. and was a member of the Maynard Community Volunteer Fire Department. Other involvement include the Fire Tac Board at Parkersburg, Tri-County Fire Fighters Assoc. and serving as a Belmont County Fire Investigator. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Maynard and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War serving as a member of the Air Crash and Rescue squad. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Richard, Jr. and a sister, Lucille Bell. Surviving are his wife, Joann Lotz Heagin, his children, Kathleen Heagin, Barbara Springer of Chesapeake, VA, Karen Cupryk and her husband Steve of St. Clairsville, Kevin Heagin of Neffs, Keith Heagin of St.Clairsville and Bridgett Heagin of Athens, OH; his brother, Jack Heagin of Woodcross, UT and grandsons, Todd, Chase, Kyle, Tyler and Dillon. Bill was a retired employee of the B & O Chessie System Railroad, a member of Glencoe American Legion Post #632 and was an Army veteran of World War II. DEREK HOFFMAN Derek Lee Hoffman, 23 of Maynard Road, St. Clairsville died Saturday, May 17, 2003 as the result of an auto accident. He was born May 31, 1979 the son of Virgil Lee Hoffman and Charlene A. Barrett Hoffman of St. Clairsville. Derek was a coach for St. Clairsville High School baseball and an employee of Tim’s Custom Installation of St. Clairsville. He was a 1998 graduate of St. Clairsville High School where he was 2 sport letterman and a McDonald’s All American and a 2003 graduate of Bethany College where he was and outstanding athlete and received a B.A. degree in Elementary Education. A member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Barton, a Navy WAVE during World War II, a volunteer at the St. Clairsville Public Library and a member of the New York and Pennsylvania State Teachers Association.Surviving are a step-son, Jonathan Ostrow of Nanuet, N.Y.; two grandchildren; four nephews, Ed Klos of St. Clairsville, Bud and Bob Klos of Pittsburgh, and Robert Stevens of Kalamazoo, Mich. Friends will be received on Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville. Funeral with Divine Liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Nicholas Church in Barton with Fr. Michael C. Kabel officiating. Burial follows in St. Nicholas Cemetery in Barton. A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday and a Panachida service at 9:15 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. EVELYN HOLTSCLAW Evelyn M. Hostsclaw, 87 of Dover Ridge, Powhatan Point went to be with her Lord on Monday, January 6, 2003 at Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus. She was born December 8, 1915 a daughter of the late Omar and Lula Walters Carpenter. Evelyn was a life long member of the Grandview Christian Church at Clover Ridge where she attended regularly. She will be sadly missed by her loved ones there. She was also a member of Captina Chapter, Order of Eastern Star at Powhatan Point. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Charles who died May 24, 2002; a sister Marie Kriechbaum and a brother Ray Carpenter. Surviving are her daughters, Peggy Holtsclaw Burghy of Woodsfield; Linda Lang and husband Phil of Barnesville; Sharon Woods of Tyler, TX; Deborah Moore and husband Neal of Alledonia; Linda Durst and husband Tom of Zanesville; granddaughters, Angela and April Burghy of Woodsfiled; two loving sisters, Opal Jenewein and husband Mel and Dorothy Graham and husband Kenneth all of Powhatan Point; two brothers, Wayne Carpenter of Powhatan Point and Floyd Carpenter of Shadyside; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Evelyn was a homemaker, loved working in her garden was a lover of animals and had a special pet dog named Poochie who will miss her so much. Friends will be received on Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. at Toothman Funeral Home, Jacobsburg and on Friday from 10 a.m. to time of service at 11 a.m. in the Grandview Christian Church, Clover Ridge with Pastor Richard Baumberger officiating. MARY HUGHES Mary Ellen Hughes, 92 formerly of Glencoe died Tuesday, April 29, 2003 in Columbus. She was born November 7, 1910 in Cecil, PA a daughter of the late John Kostelia and Josephine Kobetic Kostelia. She was a member of the Warnock Community Church and the Glencoe Senior Citizens Center. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Wesley Hughes on July 10, 1989; five brothers, John, Henry, Matt, George, and Frank Kostelia; three sisters, Anne Weston, Rose Johnson, and Julia Kovaly. Surviving are two sons, James R. Hughes and his wife Shirley of Pearland, TX. and John H.
